Is the current Tile Molester even worth using?
« on: September 02, 2017, 07:24:51 am »
I've been using a copy of Tile Molester made all the way back in 2005.

I'm apprehensive about using a newer version because a few years back I did, and it would freeze my PC with BSoDs.

Is the current Tile Molester out now worth using? Does it still cause the BSoDs? If it does, how do you make the BSoDs stop?

While I can see a BSOD coincide with tile molester usage I doubt it was the program as much as something else being crap on the PC (if a game sees my machine BSOD I will first look at the graphics drivers and temperatures), and if it was the program you must have had a virus addled junk version that was trying to worm its way in. While I have seen some nastiness in high level tools I don't know that I have ever seen in it a tile editor.

As for the program itself I kind of skipped it in favour of other things like crystaltile2 and tiled2002 as they did GBA (and then DS) better.

I haven't used it just because I don't want to install Java just to run it (and otherwise it's just those bloat these days).

What OS were you using?  If you were trying to use Win9x or WinMe, then it will likely work much better in XP or 7.  I seem to recall it used a lot of system resources.

I'm using Tile Molester cause it works. I don't know if there are better apps 12 years later, but I can't imagine there is - although I've only used it for 8-bit systems.

While I agree Java is a thing best kept off anything that does not absolutely need it (I am thankful that in whatever I pass off as IT I do sometimes for work has one single program and laptop that needs a very specific version of Java and that is it) there are other options https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable_launcher https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable

You know Emulicious, the Java GB/GBC/GG/SMS emulator?
It has a 30MB standalone version with Java included/bundled!
http://emulicious.net/downloads/

You can use tile molester with that, just unzip into the same folder.

And start the program with a custom .bat:
Code: [Select]
start java\bin\javaw.exe -jar TileMolester.jar %*
But isn't "YY-CHR" the better choice? That was always my impression:

I was using Windows XP at the time.

I've been using Tile Molester for more than a decade because it's the only way I can edit PlayStation textures for games that use ".TIM" and RAW format.

I've heard of it but I've never used it. Can it be used to modify PlayStation graphics?

Who else here uses Tile Molester (without BSoDs), and what versions do you use?

I'm still eagerly awaiting TileShop from Klarth.

Well...I get to answer my own question.

Right now there are 3 downloads for Tile Molester on RHDN.

The creators of Tile Molester Alternate admit that their work is "extremely buggy", so I'll pass.

Tile Molester Mod can't even load a palette from a CLUT inside a ".TIM" file correctly, so fuck dat shit.

The original Tile Molester by SnowBro is the only one worth using.
