Only very few tiles left for the space ship part, so i experimented with an efficient landscape. It's of course a bit reduced due to the shrinking amount of usable tiles. What do you think? Any suggestions?  I'm not yet happy with it.

You know - if the ship had been a sprite instead, you could have cut the used tiles in half.

The ship is pretty much symetrical and tiles used in sprites can be mirrored or flipped when drawn to the screen.

Just a thought.

Would require serious asm coding, and further expansion (cause the sprite pages are also limited and already nearly used up), but it would be nice and allow for lotsa more varied landscape. Would you know how to accomplish such a thing?

My uploaded pictures disappeared, does anyone know one RELIABLE picture hoster other than imgur and photobucket?
Both o'them seem not to work for me.   :-\

FLICKR seems to work :)

You see the scenery in its mockup phasis.

incredible sprite work overall. I really want to play this game.

Well - you have to make up your mind of what's more important: a impressive ship OR a varied background/enemy-fauna.

You are working with limitations when it comes to hacking old games - the challenge is to find a good balance between what you want to do and what you actually can do.

Si Senior. But on the other hand - that's what makes hacking old games so much fun. getting the best out of the strict limitations.
For my landscape i just tend to the solution of just making the the ship scenery minimal, to compensate for the lack of detail.
I don't want to "destroy" the ship in any way.
The rest of the level bank (Brinstar) is an alienated, rather detailed scenery, for which i have to construct a good transition from the ship area.

I worked and optimized more underwater. I am quite pleased. Next will be sandscape most certain.

EDIT:
One early dev sample pic out of the game. Works quite well :)

great, the idea of different types of armor for the phases areas are still active
also the zero suit, the sprites are great for the NES

great job

pd: wanting to see the map of the area in HUD and the selection menu of type of armor and weapons :o

at the end of the project it may be better to Rogue Dawn :D

Dear cartridge_rom,

As of right now i am unable to include more foreign code into the game other than the graphic change procedure and healing /Hurting tiles (yes there will be healing stations).
First of i had to expand the rom to fit more stuff in. I don't know how to do that.
Maybe there will be solutions in the future, but right now it seems the hack will feature:

- new graphics
- new level design
- new background music
- bomb jump
- healing and hurting tiles

I would absolutely love (and i know it should be possible) :

- wall jump
- map (mini and corner map)
- save feature
- faster door transition
- better enemy AI
- air morph

What i do not know if it's possible in any way, but would be on the wish list indeed:

- more beams
- beam selection / start menu
- space jump
- speed booster

What does get me to the question : Are there any asm hackers out there willing to help me?

Glad that the sprite turned out nicely.  Wasn't sure on what palette you were going to use :)

By the way, it will be in a few weeks where I can start working on enemy sprites for you if ya still want me to.  Was waiting around for details last time but got nothing back so wasn't sure on what was up lol :)

Sorry,

I was kind of idling back and forth, and lost traction and motivation in times. Not meant to irritate you. Now I'm definitely back in the game. And yeah i would love you to accompany in designing sprites, first of in the underwater area. For example one thrilling octopus. ;] I already sent you a discord request by the way, we could communicate this way also. Just tell me when you are ready and set up =) Cheers

I compiled a tiny mini demo of the underwater section, mainly to try out the optimized landscape tiles. I am pleased with look, feeling and atmosphere.

This is what I've done over the weekend, rounded up the scenery and added many detail tiles.
Underwater area is alive!

I've bounced a little demo again if you wanna see it in action.
In this case please join my discord channel =)

I worked underwater. Sinis did a great job with an alien octopussy. This wil be the last picture for a while, as well as I'm offering a demo for this part for the last time in a while. I don't wanna spoil anymore, but you get the impression and I would like to know your opinion.

Demo players please join the discord channel.
Cheers!

Have fun :)

Glad to see this chugging along. I can't wait to see the finished project.
If I had a suggestion, i'd maybe include a crouch. Crouch would have been difficult with the old sprites being so chunky but I feel with Silis' sprites, crouching could be added so you can fire low and high and double tap down to enter morphing ball similar to Super Metroid.
Just an idea, in the end the direction is up to you and it's looking great!
