Hi, I downloaded the "Romance of package" version that it's the only one I found.
I'm not sure if that's the correct version (around 900 MB)

I installed the game and when I wanted to add the patch I realize the main folder doesn't have a "Data folder".

starting the game and what the hell does this mean?

The game launcher has the resolution, sound etc. settings and you need to set them before the game will run.
In a sky full of people, only some want to fly.
Isn't that crazy?

Ok Impala!

Hello.

First of all, I want to thank you for translating this game and apologize for bumping such an old thread. Ever since I heard about it, I wanted to play it or at least watch a playthrough of it, but the only series of videos I found was in japanese... ( https://www.nicovideo.jp/user/5578498/mylist/5243880?ref=pc_userpage_mylist )

I thought watching it was going to be enough even in Japanese but its so confusing to watch cutscenes without knowing exactly what is going on lol it only made me want to play the translated version even more.

I managed to find a link for the CD version download ( https://yadi.sk/d/HOSlmPkH3HqcC5 ) but as you already said in this thread, it only works on the DVD version. The game in my CD version with your translation (without transferring the .exe file as another user in this thread pointed out) works fine until you get to the boat, when the game starts to get really messy.

MOD EDIT: Sorry, ISO requests are not permitted. You will have to either buy a copy of the game and rip it yourself, or look to other websites for assistance.

Hello everyone.
So, I've been playing this game, and enjoying it, but after Windows 10's recent update, I can't seem to get the game working anymore. The window comes up as if it's going to start, but then it suddenly closes. I'm not sure what I should do. Is anyone else having the same problem? Any solutions found yet?

Well, I got the game working again, but now there's a new problem.
My saves seem to have just disappeared. I started up the game, the saves aren't there. I looked in the "save" folder and it was empty. I have no clue what happened. I didn't go and delete them myself or anything like that. I just don't see them anymore. I really hope there's something that can be done about this. It wasn't easy getting as far as I had before.

My "save" folder is empty yet I can still access the saves... I have no idea where the game is keeping the save files, but its not in the 'save' folder where it was installed...

I made some digging and it seems that the save files for the game is in the folder:

C:\Users\(My Name)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Sonnori\Arcturus\save

Val the Moofia Boss

Greetings,

I'm trying to play the game, but it crashes on startup and tells me to configure the game. When I use the launcher and go to the options menu, it tells me to select a video device (presumably my GPU) and a screen mode (presumably windowed or fullscreen?), but when I click on those options, nothing appears. I installed the game on my Windows 10 computer and on a Windows 7 virtual machine. Same result: doesn't see a GPU and it doesn't give an option for a screen mode.

Earlier in the thread, @LuxEtUmbra pointed towards where the config files were saved in the registry as binary code, but I don't know what to input to fix it.

Does any have a fix for this?

I had the same issue and I reinstalled, then restarted my computer and that seemed to fix it.

I have a different issue, which is all the books and notes in the game are still in Japanese. OP says all the books should be translated, did I download the wrong patch?

EDIT: Just saw the rest of the thread confirming that the books are translated, but can't be put in the game for some reason. Can someone provide a link to the translations or where to find them in the files? I completely forgot how magic works in this game and the books in Baara have some spells that I want to know.

Is it considered disrespectful/unethical to continue and/or correct errors in (seemingly) abandoned translations like this one?
Having played through the entire game, I've spotted a variety of errors and want to refine the translation further.
For example; there's a bunch of that/this/it mix-ups, no proper line breaks, Act 2 Baara having a whole different way of formatting going on.
There's also a lot of oddities in general, some where it feels like the game wasn't being played.

Either way, I spent the day redoing the admittedly crude image editing done at the chapter selection, character pages, et cetera. I've also done Act 2 chapter selection edits, which I don't think Helly_ ever did.
Here's a download to the image edits (still has spoilers if examined, don't dig too deep) https://www.mediafire.com/file/awr5e29cshzbn8q/data.rar
Also contains a fix for an Act 2+ enemy (Little Mermaid) which would crash the game if hit. The developers apparently didn't save the .wav file in the correct format.
Here's an example comparison image. All edits were done with Paint.net, so my methods aren't entirely optimal.

You can just make a "data" folder and drop stuff in there, or just drop the data folder contained into the main Arcturus directory. Though with any Korean version, the patches don't seem to work fully. The game draws from different files quite a bit, so most text will stay Korean. I wouldn't be against porting the translation over, though it'd still be a lot of work and I'd love to see if I can get some of the cutscene weirdness fixed.

I had done a few edits of the chapter selection, but that was when I had the time to do some basic work on those assets. I think I prefer your results though!

I don't have any knowledge of hex editing, so I couldn't lend my hand to the more important parts of the translation and refinement, inlcuding those actor errors that spit out hundreds of prompts in a row, and that missing pain sound that crashed the game (thank you very much for that too) I noticed that there are pain sounds for the characters too, is it possible to enable those?

Edit: And do you know the reason why the game only runs well on Win7 and takes a performance nosedive on Win10?

I figure I should also mention to properly install and/or enable the Indeo video codec for this game, as there are cutscenes that use it later in the game and not just the intro.
The codec comes bundled with the game, but just in case, it's here as well along with instructions on enabling it on Vista and later: https://soggi.org/misc/articles/Intel-Indeo-video-audio-codec.htm

Had to read the thread and image search it to see if Google had indexed any images that are now gone. I think I see two of yours, yes.
I was confused as to why "difficulty" was still mentioned, so I had to dump my own .pak files instead of looking through the one I got from someone else.
Turns out I was editing files from some Korean version and looking at them as a reference, so now I'm not sure what to go with here.
Sonnori's and Falcom's graphics differ quite a bit, as well as the aforementioned difficulty mention on the scenario select.

Don't think so without altering formats I personally don't have much clue of, as I'm not a Ragnarok Online guy.
Only litlemermaid-damage.wav's format is different from the rest, so it's probably not a matter of not being correctly exported.

No, I have zero clue as I am unable to get it to run on my laptop (GE73VR 7RF, 120hz) with any combination of graphics configuration and frame rate limitations (needs to be 60) as far as I'm able to tweak these things. Basically, I have the same issue as Val has (or had.) It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the setup itself, as I manually input the data in the registry as it should be. Forcing ArcExe to use the GTX doesn't work, either.
Things like this is why I'm glad I stuck with Windows 7 on my main machine.

Edit: Got it to run under D3DWindower, finally. I'll edit in anything worthy of note.
Manually set the resolution in D3DW to 1080x1920 and uncheck Windowed Mode, run the game, minimize it and then maximize it to view everything 100%.
This won't be pixel perfect, unless combined with Borderless Gaming (https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming). Shoutouts to Bowl of Lentils for mentioning Borderless Gaming in a reply to his video.
Overworld and battles are smooth for me. Hopefully you've glossed over the "Frames' setup" in Diary > Options. Setting that to 60 gets me a smooth and relatively stable frame rate over Auto.

I was part of the mirror moon group working on the old fan translation of Arcturus.

A lot of issues come from filename localization problems, if I recall.
We had all of the books working just fine in-game, for instance -- the issue there ended up being that you needed to actually use the Korean item names as filenames and run the game in Korean locale (or use mangled versions of them converted to other codepages when running in those codepages).
Do we know if Helly ever actually released their full translation of the books? Does anyone have it?
There's only like 4 books' files in the existing patch I think?

As a sidenote, the game surprisingly has fairly robust support for other aspect ratios such as 16:9 if you manually edit it to use them, but there's no way to do that by default, too.

I think if Helly isn't going to come back and finish this translation and fix its issues, I'd be happy to support any efforts to do so.

Regarding the pain sounds, those would be attached to the animations (act files) associated with the sprite files; It's definitely possible to restore them.
There's robust spr/act editing tools for RO that work well enough with Arcturus. It should be possible with those.
It's been a long time since my RO private server development days so I don't remember the details at all, though.

Now, what I personally want most is a way to extract and re-insert the music files because the quality on them is atrocious vs the official soundtrack...

Yes, I recall there being FMV cutscenes for the ship departing the port outside Ragni, the ark flying off, and the death of the final boss. Thankfully I had no issues viewing those, but I can understand if some might not even know they exist if they don't have the means to properly play them in-game.

---

I included the "difficulty" in the text because I saw that it was present in Helly_'s placeholder graphic for the regions. I had no idea if it was part of the original Korean graphics (I used GIMP 2 for editing).

---

I'd say that would be a bummer, until Sara-chan arrived with a potential solution. I am by no means a programmer or graphical editor of any kind, but I'd like to do my part in refining the current translation efforts, no matter how small. I just need the tools for it.

I actually have two physical copies of Arcturus JP DVD, one open (and complete) and one factory sealed. I could probably extract the soundtrack's files if you find a way to replace them in-game.

I'll have to look into the animation editing again -- it really has been an extremely long time for me.

As for this at least, I can say I do have the files extracted (adp format) and understand what the files actually are -- they're basically IMA APC ADPCM, though I don't have any encoder for that codec.

Thank you for your time. :)

What I'd like to know, because I want to play it on a modern OS (and speedrun it too), is why Arcturus's performance is laughably bad in Windows 10. I haven't played Ragnarok Online on this computer, but if I recall, isn't the engine the same? Maybe there's something in RO that could be applied to Arc to fix the performance issues that aren't present in Windows 7?

Quite a few more than just 4. Pretty sure I figured out how to get the game to recognize the books. I mentioned getting a data.pak dump from someone else, which contains the books with improper unicode names. The game recognizes those.

The game should "switch over" to a higher quality version of the soundtrack while it's running, from 11khz to (apparently) 24khz. At least, it does so for me.

Did you try setting the "Frames' setup" to 60 instead of Auto? As I mentioned, on my Windows 10 laptop it helped quite a bit.
