I've never heard anything about the PCE version being worked on either, but it would be pretty darn cool (I guess you'd have to do a fandub though).

Hmmmm ... well it looks like Falcom did actually release an OST CD with all of the "Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes II" music on it.

We only have  a chance at doing a *decent* fandub on the two Legend of Xanadu games because Falcom released OST CDs with all of the games' original music that we can dub over.

If Falcom's "Perfect Collection Dragon Slayer : The Legend of Heroes II" CD really is from Hudson's game, then perhaps there is some hope for reasonable fandub for that game after all!

Falcom's extremely generous and unusually-permissive usage rights for their OST CDs would allow for it, without having to worry about Hudson/Konami getting involved.

So, if there is a bunch of existing-but-abandoned translation work somewhere for the PCE version, it would be nice to know.

Oh you meant that version? Either way still love to see that series finally get some kind of conclusion.

Falcom's series-boundaries really confuse me.

It looks like "The Legend of Heroes" series is still an active series?

Do you are talkign about abandoned projects in this site, or others?

Here's some hacks that other people can pick up to finish...

1. Strange Mario Bros. 2 (SMB2 hack)
2. Strange Mario Bros. 3 (SMB3 hack)
3. Super Wario Bros. 2 (SMB2 hack)
4. Super Carrots - A New Harvest (SMB2 hack)
5. Super Carrots - The Veggie Adventures v1.13 (SMB3 hack)

I doubt that they'll ever be finished, and they're good quality hacks...  ;D

Super Robot Wars games are a great source of underappreciated work. The kind of series that comes to mind when I think of this topic, with how many unfinished translations have come and gone.

Trails of Cold Steel III is headed to PS4 soon. But The Legend of Heroes V effectively ended the original series. The reboot Trails in the Sky is sometimes called "The Legend of Heroes VI", including on early Japanese PC releases, until its endless ports/sequels/reprints dropped the number for marketing reasons.

Finishing abandoned translations would be really cool, too. I changed the thread title, thanks for reminding me about the abandoned translation projects.  :cookie:

I don't know if this would count or not, but Tales of Destiny 2 (PS2) was started by Cless many years ago and has been inactive for a very long time now.  This is one that needs to be finished.

CM30

Well, it's sort of finished but there's currently interest in remaking my old SMW hack, Mario End Game. Though in that case it's less 'finishing' things and more 'redoing everything since the original hack was terrible'.

Still, I don't mind if anyone uses one of my projects as a base or builds upon it in future.

Super Famicom Dragon Quest VI. It's beatable, but a lot of dialogue is missing.
To quote Starscream from the Transformers The Movie: "Do I hear a second on that?"

AYE!!

I can't really help with the linguistic part, but I did take a peek at the NoPrgress translation at one point and was able to put together a table file for the English patch.

Well, not sure if I'd call this unfinished, but it's certainly not active.  I've been making little tweaks to one of my favorite romhacks, Wilford Brimley Battle (a River City Ransom hack).  I redid the font, and it looks so much nicer.  A few errors fixed, and some more Brimley-related text.  I think if I release it I'd have to add some more substantial stuff though, maybe a new move or something.

Oh man, I remember playing this game while in my coding class in high school. Those were the days.

I definitely agree on Super Robot Wars. We only have the early games translated, so someone who can translate the more recent ones would definitely help.

List of the Abandoned Translations:

Akuma-kun Makai no Wana (INACTIVE)

Albert Odyssey 2 (INACTIVE - Also somebody tried to work on Albert Odyssey 1 on the forums, we need to contact them to see what is up with them).

Aretha 2 (Currently Dynamic Designs is handling this Project)

Battle Golfer Yui (INACTIVE)

Benkei Gaiden: Suna no Shou (INACTIVE)

Blue Almanac (Officially Translated in 2011)

Casper (INACTIVE)

Castlevania X68000 (This would seem redundant considering PSX Remaster has this version)

Destiny of an Emperor III    (INACTIVE)

Double Moon Densetsu  (Completed back in 2015)

DQ3 Remix (The translation for Dragon Quest III was completed years ago)

Dragon Slayer 2 (It would be more productive to focus either on the PC Engine, Playstation or the Sega Saturn, and most preferably the Sega Saturn or PC Engine since PSX translation does not appeal to most people).

Dyna Brothers (INACTIVE)

Esparks (INACTIVE)

Farland Story 2 (Translation for this game was completed back in 2003)

G.O.D. (Dynamic Designs is working on this game)

Geograph Seal (INACTIVE)

Gran Historia  (INACTIVE)

Grandia - Parallel Trippers (The translation for this game was completed back in 2012)

Heroine Anthem II   (INACTIVE)

Hikaru no Go (INACTIVE)

Kirby's Star Stacker (SNES Version)

Last Bible 2 (The translation for this game was completed back in 2009)

Last Bible 3 (INACTIVE - The text is considered problematic, and would likely never be translated)

Light Fantasy 2 (INACTIVE - Part 1 was never translated as well)

Little Master (GB) (INACTIVE)

Lord Monarch (INACTIVE)

Magical Taluluto Adventure (INACTIVE)

Metal Slader Glory - Director's Cut (INACTIVE)

Otogirisou (INACTIVE)

Panorama Cotton (INACTIVE

Puyo Puyo (Translation completed back in 2000)

River City Ransom X68K (INACTIVE - Personally probably no point since you wouldn't need this game to be in English)

Shadowrun (Awhile back on Neogaf, and other forums there was a team who was working on the Japanese Version of Shadowrun for the MEGA CD ENGINE, but nothing ever came of it. If someone wishes to contact the team to ask what is up with them then maybe this project can continue)

Shinsenden (INACTIVE)

Surging Aura (I believe this was officially translated right?)

Tokimeki Memorial (INACTIVE)

Tomato Adventure (INACTIVE)

Yamato Takeru    (INACTIVE)

I think there should be notes made in the abandoned projects for games that already had been translated in various languages like English, Spanish, etc, so that people are not wasting their time translating a game that was already translated in that specific language.

Nintendo localized Kirby's Star Stacker for Game Boy only. The SNES full color version missed out.

Hi there,
I'm very glad you made this topic and that the community here is generally ok with this. I completely agree that when a hack that's unfinished, hasn't been touched in years and basically abandoned, it's ok to try and finish it so long as you give the original creator credit. This way at least people can enjoy the hacks, and some of them are actually pretty amazing.

I've actually done this to two Mega Man 2 hacks already. I kept them to myself because I recall reading on another rom hacking forum that this is frowned upon(finishing another person's hack). So, I never released them. But I think this is a good time to do so here.

I've made these two MM2 unfinished hacks so that you can actually play through them from beginning all the way to the end:

1) Rockman 2 Deluxe Ver (use GoodNES 3.14 - Rockman 2 - Dr. Wily no Nazo (J) [!])

For this one, I basically reworked the tiles and a few items/enemies for Wily 3 so that the stage isn't a jumbled mess. You can now easily navigate and play through it normally and get to the rest of the game.
REMOVED - Will update with a newer/complete version in the future.

2) Mega Man 2 Wily's Conquest 2 - v0.9 (user GoodNES 3.14 - Megaman II (U) [!])
http://www.filedropper.com/megaman2-wilysconquest2uv09

The unfinished version of the game ends after Wily 3. As soon as you begin in Wily 4 you are surrounded by death tiles so you are unable to go on. None of the Wily 4, 5, and 6 levels are done. The original MM2 Wily 4 and 5 levels are left intact in the rom, so I brought them back with some edits to take advantage of MM's added speed. I completely redesigned Wily 4's boss for this as well. Wily 6 was partially hacked, but appeared to be intentionally 'blocked off'. I opened it back up and put the stage back together with a few of my own edits also with MM's new speed in mind.

I have always been fascinated with this hack as it speeds up MM's movement much like Burst Chaser. However, this came out in 2002 so that's pretty amazing, and I prefer MM1&2's gameplay/physics over MM3-6 so I've always wanted to play through this one. With that said, the original hack of the robot master stages aren't without problems. With the added speed, you'd think this hack would be a blast to play through. But the original version of the hack was littered with bad enemy placements and at times just way too many enemies in each section, making the game less than enjoyable in many areas to play through. For this reason, I'm keeping the version number at 0.9 for now. When I have the time, I would love to come back and 'clean up' the rest of the hack and the stages for a better experience.

Ok that's all I have for now. I've attached the IPS files for the two hacks. Feel free to give them a whirl and let me know what you think!
I'll likely submit these two hacks to the site later also.

Cheers! :)

Well while digging around in unfinished works, here is some stuff that could use a revival once someone has the author's permission:

Emerald Dragon (Turbo CD - Dave Shadoff)
-I tried contacting a few of the hackers (one of the hackers is not really supposed to be listed), but I never got a real response on what was going on with this project.

Eien no Filena (SNES - satsu)

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 (SNES)
-I'm not entirely sure, but I think the guys working on Holy War will be working on Thracia 776 soon.

Leplace no Ma (SNES - Aeon Genesis)
-Technically this is actually finished, but has bugs, so if anyone is willing to help debug Aeon's project then I would ask him.

Majin Tensei (SNES - MrRichard999)
-Either this or Aeon's version of the game, I would ask either author to see if someone is willing to help out with it.

Romancing Saga 2 (SNES - Ghilhide Version)
Translation Description:
From what I played, almost everything menu, monster, and name-related is done. A small bit of the dialogue is done, but it looks like Gilhide was having problems with the game's variable-width font. It's not too distracting, though.

That is quite the headstart with this project, and hopefully someone can pick this up with author's permission.

Romancing Saga 3 (SNES - Mana Sword Version)
-A lot of work was put into this, and it would be a shame if it were never finished completely.

Ys V Expert (SNES - MrRichard999)
-I wonder how different this is compared to what Aeon translated?

Wizardry: Seimei no Kusabi (DS - Faramir)

Cool, thanks for working on these hacks! Dragoneye Studious was a powerhouse back in the day. And Rockman 2 Deluxe is a great hack, too. I'm gonna give these a spin before I head out, I always wanted to hack Mega Man 2 also. :D

Another hack that can be finished is Super Hario Bros V4.46, a SMB2 hack. You can find it on most ROM sites to check it out, it has decent level designs and the graphics are decent too.

This one has been active since early 2015 on the PCEngineFX forums, with NightWolve officially taking over the project from Dave Shadoff (with his blessing), and he's been slowly working on it since then.

I believe that there are a few technical hurdles to overcome, like running out of RAM for the re-compressed scripts, and when they're done, it'll be ready for SamIAm to finish the translation.

-I wonder how different this is compared to what Aeon translated?

Gideon said it would be quite a bit of rework to support the Expert version.

And it sounds like Gideon had quite a lot of technical work just getting the normal version translated (and he's no stranger to complicated hacking).
I don't mean to be rude, though I'm not sure how MrRichard's hacking/programming skills compare to Gideon for finishing such a task. :)

Captain Rainbow is still up for grabs, all the actual translation work is already long done, it just needs someone with time and knowhow to patch the work back in via Ocarina, I'm not sure whether that guy who was giving me pointers (Can't remember your name, sorry) made anymore progress or not, meanwhile I've just been endlessly fucking around with Shindou Mario 64 and being generally incompetent. :P

EDIT:

My mistake, the guy who tried to do TOD2 was named Cless, and the other person is Absolute Zero with his own website. So I guess it stands to reason that TOD2 is abandoned.

I always assumed Cless & AZ were the same person.

I had no idea Dragoneye Studious was that big back int he day, all I know is these 2 hacks were made in 2002 and 2004 respectively, and it'd be a shame to just leave them incomplete and abandoned.

If you enjoy MM2 hacks and would like to hack MM2, I'd say it's now pretty hard to top MMCX. That game is like a MM2 sequel that I never got as a kid 30 years ago! Absolutely amazing.

I've never tried hacking Mario games before but I'll definitely get around to check it out soon!

Cheers! :)

I'm actually still working on Wily's Conquest 2's hack. Other than opening up the last 3 Wily levels, I'm cleaning up the rest of the stages. Some of the enemy placements are a mess and I'm also fixing up areas to take advantage of the faster Mega Man speed. ;)

And yeah, I always felt that it's kind of tragic that some of these seemingly great hacks go unfinished. Notable examples are Abnormality, Unprecedented, and Mind Roar. They all have some of the best hacking efforts especially Mind Roar where the creator(Misty) actually figured out reverse gravity and charged shots for each weapon! Hopefully someone or I will eventually get around to finishing those as well!

Cheers! :)
