Hey TheGreatBen,

Thank you for the update!  I took a look at the ReadMe and found a few typos and spelling inconsistencies, so I made a pass and fixing what I saw.  You can take a look at my edits here:

I saw Casual Tom's recent Twitch stream of 1999, and I was blown away by the work you have done. I wondered if there was a way to truly sweeten the package, and thn thing that came to mind was importing music from the PSX and DS releases. Two tracks in particular could fit well.

1999 World Map: A Meeting with Destiny
1999 In Town: One Sunny Day When We Met

I can probably work with Gi Nattak or Emberling to get these into a form that can be injected into the rom. The question is, if we made them available, would you be interested in using them? It would require uninterrupted free space in the rom, so if you're running short on that, it's probably not possible.

Gi Nattak and I worked together about a year ago to get Leo's Theme added to my FFVI Hack.

ThegreatBen

Ya, I loved those tracks. If you think you can get them in I'd love to have them. I'll take a look for some free space.

Might not be for a few days though.

You can find the psf files here:

though I don't know how difficult (or possible) it is to do a straight conversion to spc.  Obviously MSU-1 will allow for mp3 versions, though I would think that you'd want a native variant as well.

Here's one of casualtom 's recent playthroughs (i do not follow anything-chrono trigger personally)

Somebody composed a native version of One Sunny Day, but didn't provide a patch at the time.

Here's the song and instrument data for 'One Sunny Day When We Met'.
Credit of course to Reld for making the SPC, and emberling for mfvitools which I used for this purpose.

Oh good. You're on this thread. I found MIDI files transcribed by Dave Harris for the other 3 "extra" songs from the PSX/DS versions of Chrono Trigger. Here's a video, and here's his midi download page. If you're up for it, I can make sure the midi for "A Meeting With Destiny" in arranged in proper 8-voice format. The completionist in me also wants to give the same treatment to Scattering Blossoms and Time To Rest.

I see that Emberling has already taken care of the unreleased prototype songs "Keeper's Dome" and "Tyrano Lair Battle", and that the data is available here.

As long as we're adding new music, I wonder if there are any places where those songs would fit well. Here are Youtube links so you can hear both of them.
Keeper's Dome
Tyrano Lair Battle

Checked it out and music slots 53-FE are empty, and there is oodles of free space at the end of the expanded rom. About 1/5 of the entire rom is still blank.

So if we can get all 6 tracks in I can place them.

Man, you guys are amazing.

This. Not everyone is a fan of MSU. Takes away from the immersion.

That song has a problem. The maraca sound is only in the left channel and should be spread across both.. Otherwise, it sounds good!

PowerPanda

I'm excited about this. Gi and I are going to take a look at "A Meeting with Destiny" together, and depending on how hard that is, we'll decide whether or not to do "Scattering Blossoms" and "Time To Rest". For those of you that ARE using MSU-1, note that the Blake Robinson Orchestra Disc 4 includes all of these tracks, so you're covered.

Fingers crossed on this. Chrono Trigger with 6 additional songs would be a dream come true for me.

Right you are, I should've checked the official version of the song - the author of the SPC either chose to do that or it was a mistake. Anyways, the Mediafire link is updated with the maraca panning to the center.

I just mapped out A Meeting With Destiny, and the playstation version is meant to SOUND like an 8-channel SNES song, but it CHEATS by having the celesta and electric piano on a 1/16th note delay echo... something that an SNES can't replicate without 2 more sound channels. :banghead: That means that of my 8 tracks, I would need:
1. Celesta 1
2. Celesta 2
3. E Piano 1
4. E Piano 2
5. Bass Guitar
6. Hi-Hat
7. Bass and Snare
8. 1 measly channel left for everything else.

If I got a bit "creative" and did an arrangement instead of a transcription, would everyone be okay with that?

Ok Impala!

Just jumping in here to say this sounds amazing!  :)

ThegreatBen

Having a recognizable version of them is fine, since the msu versions will still be authentic.

I checked the space in the rom and there is some right after the existing music. Not sure if it will fit all 6 though.

That shouldn't be too big a deal once I find the pointers.

Nothing wrong with MSU-1, the nice thing about MSU-1 is you can manually replace the tracks that doesn't require much knowledge except trying to loop another song (from a player standpoint).

and I never found it immersion breaking as I get the opposite effect (especially if the music is really good and fitting) and if I found there was a song that was ill-suited for the game I would manually change it (This is why it is always a good practice to provide videos of what kind of music is inside that MSU-1 PACK in case if they have to change something manually before playing begins).

The other nice thing about MSU-1 is if you wanted to use other official tracks like importing the improved Chrono Trigger DS tracks into the SNES version you can do that, and can switch back between the two whenever you feel like it.

The choices in song quality and the instruments played does matter a lot though if you're not going to use official tracks, and that can be very tricky sometimes. My opinion when doing a MSU-1 mod is always put in various official music packs first and foremost, and then provide a experimental optional Remix Version just as a fun side-project.

Like all things MSU-1 has its Benefits and Minuses, but I find MSU-1 benefits more than it takes away, and you can adjust it when a change is needed.

On another note I didn't even know the SNES version didn't have those bonus tracks that appeared in the PSX/DS.

MD_Prometh

Oh yeah, the PS1 version had some exclusive tracks. IIRC, there's even an exclusive credits theme in the PS1 version

ThegreatBen

Sorry for not responding sooner, life has been hectic the last few weeks. Things are slowly moving forward on adding the new tracks.

I would very much like to make msu-1 versions of the songs (orchestrated doesn't matter)
And possibly include them in the download.

Does anyone know how to make working msu-1 tracks? Or better yet if I give you the songs could make them up for the project?

The link to the patch file is for 2.5.2 even though it says 2.5.3. Also can you post a link to the patch page on the first post of this thread? What, are people supposed to search chrono trigger plus each time?
