Maldita Castilla

I don't know if any of you have played this game, but I like it a lot. It's a superb Ghouls n Ghosts clone with a medieval Spanish setting, awesome music, great bosses, and a deliciously gothic atmosphere. It's also much more fair than the original GnG games were. For example, MC gives you 3 hits instead of 2, in addition to the shield that you can find in chests. You also have more freedom of choice in weapons, armor and health are more frequent, and there are unlimited continues (although if you lose too many, you won't get the true ending). Best of all, you don't have to beat the game TWICE. ;D Yes, this game is hard, but it's also not needlessly sadistic. That makes it better, imo.

This is also the game that inspired me to strike out on my own and make the software that I want to see, instead of waiting for bloated husks like Konami to do it. Locomalito designed this game all by himself (though he had help with the music), drawing on his own cultural background, mythology, etc, while in many ways building upon and improving the formula that he used as his blueprint. We need more of this sort of thing. A LOT more.

That one's been getting a fair bit of attention.  There's even an enhanced version on Steam.

It initially used some variety of game-creation software, if I'm not mistaken.

Oh, it's out there, probably.  We don't notice so much because there are so few who do it WELL.

Someone was trying to port it to Genesis. Don't know how far he got, but he was up to...

I've been playing through it on and off the past couple of weeks after seeing an article on Hardcore Gaming 101 about it.

It feels like an extremely polished Ghosts 'N Goblins with really great atmosphere and a difficulty nowhere near as fucking insane as that game's. It's fairly phenomenal, all in all.

You may also want to check out The Curse of Issyos and Hydorah by the same makers, which are similar to Castlevania and Gradius, respectively, though they are much more than simple clones of those games ultimately.

I've played Issyos as well, and I think it's one of the best Greek mythology games of all time. Yes, that is very high praise, but Locomalito has more than earned it. The entrance to Medusa's temple really stood out too. Just hearing that creepy music play as you approach the temple while bypassing countless petrified civilians is an unforgettable experience. It sent a chill down my spine.
