Can you spot any differences?

Hello everybody!
Do you know "Fist of the North Star" / "Hokuto No Ken" / "Ken le Survivant", the anime/manga? Yeah? How about Last Battle, that shitty game for Genesis/MD? You know that game is a toned down version of something else, right? Hokuto No Ken!

Well, I've just recently watched this anime and decided to hack the japanese version into English. My original plan was to just take the script from Last Battle and give some flavor to it.
I read somewhere that LB has an almost word-for-word (painful) translation from Japanese - minus the HNK license. All in all, I have to be sure of that.

Could you have a look at the JAPANESE script and TRANSLATE it, please? It's quite small.

As you can see in the last picture, I had to hack the ROM to make it display English. And to do so, had to learn freakin' ASSEMBLY. All I can say is: read all you can, as much as you can and DON'T GIVE UP. It's gonna be worthy it!

Just now, I found out that Last Battle messed with the window size values and the distance between lines. Naturally, I have to go back and fix that. But first...I have to find the X and Y values. Any ideas where I should start looking for that table?

I'm not a native english user but I guess my english is okay (and as long as you can fix my typos, it should be fine).

I translated this game ~4 years ago from japanese to french for someone who wanted to make a french translation of it, so I can also translate it from japanese to english.

An update to the project: the distance between lines is fixed and I can now display 4 lines on each window. Just having problems generating the final extra part of the window.


Update 2: Final part of window fixed! Now everything is running smoothly, just waiting for the text.

It has one but the western released removed everything of the First of the North Star licence.

They removed most of the blood (remaining one has a different color if I remember right), exploding bodies, renamed all the characters. Modified the skin color of some humans to make them look like mutants, etc...

It's not one of the best Genesis game but the japanese version is more enjoyable.

The biggest problem of the game is it's difficulty. A romhack to tweaks some things wouldn't be a bad thing. The actual difficulty is pretty much a "hard mode" when you compare with most of the other olders games.

A energy bar which would decrease twice lower wouldn't be a bad thing. Or better, several lifes or some continues. Because in the actual version, you have to beat the whole game with only one life, which is pretty crazy xD

This screenshot was taken before I received the translated script. I'm putting it in here just so you can see the outcome.

My original plan was to enhance the dialog to give a better understanding of the story and "true to character's personality" lines. So, I'm thinking about doing this to the more bland lines. Don't know. Haven't decided yet.

About the romhacking, I DID make the character walk faster by default and I'm finding the game MUCH more entertaining this way, it's more like Black Belt now. Killing the enemies is not a pain in the ass now and I find myself WANTING to go after them just to make them explode.
Since the levels are short and killing hordes of enemies, just like in the anime, is so fun I believe you will want to explore the map more to level up Kenshiro - and it's also necessary for the bosses.

A hack to make it easier? I'm thinking about that as well. Maybe I can implement a default continue screen, something like that. I just have to figure it out how the game keeps track of the last chapter you played.

Oh man, I can't believe I went this far, and this is my first hack! Unbelievable!

Yeah, it's true the character original speed wasn't the best.

To not make the game too easy (freeplay would might make the game a bit too easy), I guess the best would be to unlock continues depending of the score.

It would require to check the average score after each map and make the average a bit higher to force players to grind a bit to get continues but I guess it would okay for the difficulty balance.

I just looked at a speedrun, and at the end, the score is 157400 points. I found another playthrough (longer) and at the end, the score is 373900 points. I only checked the japanese version because I guess the score might be different with the western version (as it sometimes happen in some games). So, the average score would be 250000 points.

A continue every 50000 might be too much, it would give 5+ continues for the whole game. I guess a continue every 100000 points would be more balanced. It would give 2-3 continues for most people, which seem enough to finish the game.

Of course, after each used continue, the score would have to be reset to zero to keep the difficulty balance.

(And it wouldn't affect people who want to play it with only one life, as they could just not use the continues, contrary to a modification of the damages/jauge which would impact them).

Some of these ideas are great fun. But for those of us who might like to have the option of playing the game with the difficulty/gameplay as it was originally released, but with the revised translation, would you consider having two separate patches -- one with just the translation, and the other with these gameplay modifications as well?

Or, if it's accessible in a straightforward way via the options menu, that'd be fine too. :) "It" meaning "unaltered/original gameplay settings", that is.

For now, the only actual gameplay modification is the speed of the character, so that's probably the only thing wich would require a separate patch.

Because even if they are added, continues are not a gameplay modification as someone can just not use them and restart from the beginning.

I owe Last Battle PAL for Mega Drive and since I knew this was actually a game originally licensed Hokuto No Ken I've been looking for the way to play the japanese.

Is this project going on?
Would it be possible to know which tools must one use to translate a game like this from japanese to english?
There was already a translation provided?

Yup! This project is still on. It's going on in baby steps, but it's on. I guess it's time for a quick update then...

Last week, finally took some time and added a simple character counter to the project. Now, I don't need to count in my head how many characters can fit in each line anymore. I can concentrate on the script adaptation itself. 16 out of 43 script lines translated by Hiei have already been adapted. This shouldn't take long.

To do list:
  • Hack of the status menu for translation (needs a little hacking for characters, but will be done)
  • Change Ein's color palette to the U.S. flag color used in Last Battle. (strangely, the Japanese original version changed it)
  • Hack of title screen (don't know how to do it yet)
To MAYBE do:
  • Possible hack of the continue menu to make it more accessible

Now, that's a bad ass logo! The best one I've seen so far! I am definitely using it!

Update:
Finished analysing the routine the ASM does to print things on the screen. At least now I can say that I "know" what's going on and, in theory, could reproduce it. Just need a more automatic method to compress the data back to the ROM.

I'm happy to announce that the Hokuto No Ken/Last Battle project is ON again! Need to take care of a few more bugs and it's gonna be released.

A buddy who's helped me test it found a few untranslated lines. Two of them I could handle, but I need help with this line:
