I'm kind of afraid to download a new emulator, though, since a while back we got shut off for downloading certain roms and music. ...I'm not even sure hacks are right, though from what I know, both hacks and emulators are perfectly legal to download, but I'm not 100% sure.

Wrong. The readme in the actual hack-file told me that past versions of SNESX9 wouldn't work with the game, so in fact it COULD have something to do with it.

And yeah, I did read the link, which mentioned that either the rom I'm using doesn't have a/the correct header or it's corrupted, and that might be why it doesn't work, but again: the readme says that not all versions of SnesX9 are compatible. Please don't act like someone doesn't have their facts straight if you yourself do not.

Hacks are largely a legal gray area (haven't really been legally challenged beyond things like C&D and DMCA which don't set legal precedents) and emulators are largely considered to be legal. You could dissect the finer points of it ad nauseam, but if you want to do that there are already other threads that better serve that purpose. If you want the most definitive, reliable advice, of course, consult a lawyer.
