Any good NES/GB/GBC Horror games?
« on: October 25, 2016, 09:48:03 pm »
I'm looking for some spooky stuff to play on my 3ds during my lunch break at work,
Retroarch on O3DS isn't powerful enough to handle anything more advanced than NES/GBC though and I don't feel like injecting any more GBA roms so I need something low on power/good on atmosphere.

Already got Sweet Home, gonna give it try too.

NES: Monster Party, Gargoyle's Quest 2, Shadowgate, Zombie Nation, Megami Tensei 1-2
GB: Castlevania 2, Gargoyle's Quest 1-2, Metroid II, Revelations

There's also Splatterhouse and Kid Dracula, but they're parody games.

There's Devil World, Holy Diver and New Ghostbusters II for the NES.

Most of those are just games that have monsters in it, not a horror game.

For NES there is Sweet Home, which was the inspriation for RE. For GBC there is the RE prototype and a Alone in the Dark game. Both of those are impressive in thier own right and come as close as 8-bit can come to horror.

Castlevania of course.  I played Castlevania Remix recently and it was pretty good with setting a sort of atmosphere.  Grab that if you think your 3DS can be bright enough.

For something less scary halloween there's a spoopy world in Super Mario Land 2.  All the bats and skeletons you could want, it even takes place in a pumpkin and has a witch for a boss!  The GBC also has Avenging Spirit where you are your own ghost that possesses other people, the BW graphics actually help out a little in a way.

Ninja Gaiden is a good horror game. Birds will randomly attack you.

I've heard it was based on that Alfred Hitchcock movie.
Cigarettes, ice-cream, figurines of the Virgin Mary...

Not really.

OP already has it, as he/she said.

Milon's Secret Castle is a horror game in it's own right.
Like Super Mario Land? Then you'll love my first completed Rom Hack: Maniac on the Run!

Uninvited.

Thought you were talking about the Milon's secret Castle comment at first lol, but yeah I just looked that up and it seems like it's worth a try, Ill get it with the de-censor patch too.

Also yeah Secret Castle I've seen commentary on that masterpiece.

Checked out the Alone in the Dark game, its clunky as hell but it seems quite ambitious for the time and system, although it probably has better controls than Alone in the Dark 1. ;)
Resident Evil Proto looks cool too just picked it up.

Wait a minute...
I just looked at screenshots of Uninvited and they menu/HUD looked remarkably like another game I've been playing, Sword of Hope II, *Looks at developer name* Yep both made by Kemco, about 6 years apart too.

I don't know what could be classified as "horror" in those poor pixels (it was not scary), but I double Splatterhouse for NES, suggest Devil Children, Last Bible (Revelations), Alone in the Dark and both Resident Evil, for GBC. :)

Uninvited (along with its sister titles Shadowgate and Deja Vu) was originally for Mac, published by Infocom under their "MacVenture" line as a point-and-click.

Cool, I did not know that, enjoying the game so far though, Pretty much stealing everything that isn't nailed down, chugged some cyanide once, tried to punch a skeleton, pointing controls are a little awkward but meh overall not a problem.
