My Captain Rainbow Translation Project for Wii

If you read that page on the alternate website, it is not a Captain Rainbow patch in the zip file.

It is the builder I used for my project, in case anybody wanted to do their own Wii project, and need an idea on how to distribute it.

Glad to dedicate my first post here in ROMHacking for this thread.

Anyway, my deepest thanks to everyone for making this english translation becoming close to reality and to completion to boot, to both Kirameki and Markass among others that kept reviving the project and move on forward with it. I remember being a massive fan of this game around 6 or more years back, and was quite excited to hear a fan translation was being developed for it.

Though lots have changed since and I lost interest on this project actually, I'm genuinely surprised it has been given so much support towards completion so far! I'm sure many people, including some famous Nintendo-Youtubers TheBitBlock would appreciate it. I even went to message Josh of BitBlock about this project, and hope he gets to hear about it - perhaps even showcase it incase you get the patch finished?

In anycase, my biggest wishes for luck towards this project's completion soon!

That's great, I'm glad people still follow this project like I did.
We all took a little vacation this summer, so forgive me for not posting sooner.

I just heard that the missing translation is more than 50% done, I should get it back pretty soon.

I have also figured out how to change text in the Map and character bios in Main.dol.

In Wii and Gamecube, Main.dol is the main Executable file. The pointers are very difficult to figure out, but main.dol puts all its values into memory.

I figured out a memory hack and patched the .dol with it to create new memory address with english, and point origonal memory address in japanese to the new address.

You will not need cheat manager, it is hard coded into the ISO.

Also while playing around with Gecko codes I cheated to have all items.
Now I can make sure all the formatting and pointers are correct for names and descriptions.

I also managed to switch the Home Button Menu to english with changing the memory code.

The patch now has no known bugs or glitiches. Just some missing translation.

Great job MarkAss.  I still can't get over how good it looks to see this game in English.  Maybe Kirameki can pick up my other two Japanese Wii games (Earth Seeker and Takt of Magic) hint-hint  ;)

So wait, there was text that wasn't translated in the original translation by Kirameki?  Glad to hear you're getting the rest of the translation.

Just curious, how far done do you think you are?  What's left?

Send your hints to Kirameki, I have very basic knowledge of Japanese translation and am not technically affiliated with them to make suggestions happen any faster.

About 1000 lines of text are left to be translated to my knowledge.

There are also some text with 1 or 2 characters that were skipped by text dump.

Once I get the translation back, I will apply it and release a patcher for anyone willing to help test.
If any Japanese is found, I will correct it.

Only text remaining would be located in two files that are giving issues when dumping.
(Globals.bin and Main.dol)
But this missing translation should complete Globals.bin.

The game has yes/no questions, and runs on a time clock, so a character will say different things depending on the answer or time of day.
So testers would help cover possible scenarios I may not have noticed.

Very excited to hear that the translation is nearing completion! I can't wait to see the hard work you and Kirameki put in come to fruition. I would otherwise love to help test, but I've been looking forward to a casual playthrough for so many years that I doubt I'd be able to report anything useful in a timely manner. If it's something I can do without rushing through, though, count me in.

Interesting to hear about your HOME Menu hack. It's always been in English for me when I play imports. Or am I missing something?

Takt of Magic was already under our hands, we translated (just from screen) the first 10 missions but then we had to stop for lack of time. I loved Lost Magic, and Takt was good too.
Earth Seeker, well, I never got around to even try it, but I really should because it's one of the games I'd like to see translated the most.
If only we had more free time.
Congrats if you worked on them!

It depends on the consoles region I beleave.
It was English on Dolphin, but would show up Japanese on North American console.

Every Wii game has a HBM folder with all languages, depending on region of console.

I tried switching the file names so English file overwrote JAP, but it froze using USB loader on my Wii.
I tried a region patch on ISO, but it still froze on USB loader.

But pointing the memory address in Main.dol from JAP to ENG seems to work on both Dolphin and Console.

Here's my NTSC Wii playing JAWA〜マンモスとヒミツの石〜. The language setting in Gecko OS is "Default", and I set "Force NTSC" to off.



Is it possible that this hack is only necessary on Dolphin? For the record, my Wii is Letterbombed 4.3U, and I have the newest version of Gecko OS (1.9.3.1).

e: Oh, ok. Just tried launching my copy of Captain Rainbow via Riivolution instead, and the HOME menu's in Japanese. I was just missing that obvious detail. Sorry.

Even if there was a way to configure a backup loader to fix it, I like to be noob friendly.
The less steps to make the game work, the better.


While waiting for the remaining translation, I took a look at Giftpia for GameCube, which is like the prequel to Captain Rainbow.

Oh great.  Do you happen to have any of it posted?  I never played Lost Magic, I'm sure I'd understand more if I had played that.

I agree, and good job fixing the HOME menu in Riivolution. Gecko OS isn't a backup loader, though, it only plays retail games. I wonder if they accomplished changing the menu region in a similar way?

Wow, thank you! I intended to play through GiFTPiA just by consulting the Kirameki text translation, but if you and/or someone else actually created a patch, that would be super amazing!

Yes, but in italian. Google's translation from italian to english should be good enough tho.

All of this discussion reminds me of a while ago, when I would go to Kirameki and look, with silent optimism, upon the progression of Captain Rainbow, which I've always found to be one of the most interesting Wii games that I'll never get to play. On a side-note, I was one of those people who really did think that there was a little chance that Earth Seeker would be localized, because I really wanted to play it. I really would like to see it translated someday, too.

I want to thank you, Kirameki translators, for still working on this game. Congrats on the good news also  :beer:!
