Game cube hacks lacking
« on: September 08, 2016, 10:21:31 pm »
Not new to the forum or site, but this seems like something of a noob question.  I know there are several game cube hacks out there.  Is there some reason why so few of them get submitted here?  Is romhacking.net secretly really a cart centric hacking community?

Because nobody submitted them.

Either nobody has heard of them, or technical reasons like releasing hacked ISOs, or patch too big or such.

What about PC mods? Could any mod be submitted as a "ROM Hack"?

I think our acceptance of PC mods was more dicey.
We have PC translations, but I think the last time someone brought it up, I think it was turned down due to most popular PC games having their own modding communities.
(though I know some console games do have large mod/hack communities as well)
There was probably more to it than I remember.

Probably a reason alot of hacks weren't submitted too was that they came out while gamecube was still new and was banned from submission here. When GC finally stopped being supported people didn't go back and find old hacks and submit them here. Same thing happened with alot of GBA hacks. Same thing could have happened with PSP and DS.

Also, as mentioned the hacks could have been too big to submit here, especially for ISO games. But even if it has a big patch that don't mean a page for the hack can't exist. So if you know of some hacks you can submit them and simply link to an offsite download of the hack. If the dl ever goes down people will still see the hack exists and they can search for it and hopefully it will still be uploaded somewhere.

Patch sizes would prevent a good number from being hosted here too.

When you submit a hack there is a box you can check if the patch is over 30 MB in size and too big to be hosted here. So even if the patch is too big a page can still be created. We don't know what hacks you are talking about so you will have to submit them yourself andrewclunn.

Well first, it seems odd that tools from smash boards like:

https://smashboards.com/threads/dat-texture-wizard-current-version-4-3.373777/

aren't here.  And of course there's the well regarded 20XX Melee Hack.

And with stuff like the attack helicopter gender pronoun joke hack, one would think that when this hack went viral that it'd be here for posterity:

At one point there were a number of Zelda hacks in a similar vain to that here. Link's Awakening, LTTP, Wind Waker, and other's had minor changes to the scripts to make the games gender neutral. The helicopter hack came later on, and ironically, had more text changed than most of the other aforementioned Zelda hacks put together.

I think text hacks that only change some pronouns around are in the "Too little changed to be hosted" category. Idk how text heavy the hack you linked to is since it's been awhile since I last played Wind Waker, so that might not be the case here. Try submitting it and see what happens!
Like Super Mario Land? Then you'll love my first completed Rom Hack: Maniac on the Run!

I'm glad u this brought it up. The GameCube has the best version of Dr.Mario. its part of a little known game collection released only in Japan. 'Nintendo Puzzle Collection'.
The game, plus data are well under 100MB.

All i ask is for some of you to take a look :)

Believe it or not but a lot of people don't know about this gem

Enough people have heard to it to have at least taken a look.

Not sure if it makes it easier or harder that supposedly Nintendo Puzzle Collection uses the BIOS font for text (and so will be cavespeak when played with a non-Japanese GameCube console/BIOS).
