It's probably also that Portrait of Ruin has pretty wacky character designs and that all I'm doing is just editing existing artwork.

Slightly reworked Vincent:

Ok, you just changed this guy. It's a good version of it.

Yes, ExdeathAnimus' Vincent would replace the cobbled-together Vincent I did before. I feel like Vincent was by far the weakest link of my "creations".

Pixelization:

I'm gonna use the version with the longer collar for the ending portraits.

Alright guys, so here it is, Brauner in all his glory. This was requested to me in the Castlevania subreddit, after one of you guys messaged me about my Vincent drawing. Glad I could be a part of this project, I’ve actually never been part of a rom hack. https://www.deviantart.com/inabiuchiha98/art/Brauner-Ayami-Kojima-Style-809714539

Awesome!
ExdeathAnimus does such great artwork.
The new portraits with his style are coming along nicely :)

So far, those were the only ones I've requested, as I feel both were the weakest links in the line-up. If SiegfriedBelmont wants to tackle any of the others, that's alright with me too.

I've fit them in the ending portrait thing.

Color-coded backgrounds this time. Red for the main characters, green for the side characters, gold for the unlockable portraits. I think this time the thick and textured idea I had for the background is still somewhat noticeable.

For the CG version, smooth backgrounds, maybe gradients, would probably fit better?

I used Annette for Stella. Maybe Pachinko Annette could work as a base for yours.

for vincent's vampire ending portrait wouldn't it be better to make his skin pale ?

The different ending portrait is for beating hard mode. There are also unlock conditions for Dracula and Death.

And the pixel portrait, overlaid on his normal portrait and it fits perfectly.

The new portraits look great!
And the artwork by Inabi keeps looking superb :)

I'm saving up all of the portraits so far, so once we hit the point that you feel it's okay to put them in the ROM, do let me know, so I can make the hack and drop the beta patch asap.

I decided to give the actual ROM hacking part a try.
Almost all images were imported successfully.

Although, there are some which had some issues, mostly with the palette side of things.

1) Charlotte's Menu portrait has a lot of issues with the palette. This one has the restriction of only 16 colours, so we need to work around the menu portrait taking those 16 colours into consideration:

Original / Mockup / Indexed palette in-game (16 colours)

2) Jonathan's Menu portrait suffers from the same problem as Charlotte's, in which we only have 16 colours to work with for his portrait.

Original / Mockup / Indexed palette in-game (16 colours)

3) Death has a slight issue with the palette for his hood.

Mockup / In-game palette

4) Both Loretta and Stella's human portraits imported without issues. However, their vampire portraits have issues with both the heterochromia effect on their eyes, specifically the green eye seems to not translate as well. Maybe using a brighter green might help (I still have to implement a similar version to this portrait for Stella's human portrait, since I still have her "long-neck" one for her human portrait):

Now that I try to remember the game. I think those are the graphics shown when you perform a Dual Crush. The menu portraits are portrait-oriented, while these are landscape-oriented.

I'll see if I can find an elegant solution for those portraits this weekend. Maybe with grayscale. Worst case scenario, doing something entirely different with them.

Ah you're right.
I for some reason thought they were the menu portraits.
It's been a while since I last played PoR.
But all in all, I think those are the only ones really affected by the conversion.

The rest can be fixed with some slight pixel work and recolouring.

Are the actual menu portraits under any special color limitations?

If you give me the templates, I'll cut out and scale the portraits from the source from scratch for these four as well this weekend, so they look nice and crisp. That's probably important, since these are the ones players will see the most.

I don't think I actually have those :O
I need to find them in the ROM.

I also don't have the smallest portraits seen in the upper right corner for switching characters.
Although I did find their data, it's at 0x1A2E420, and 0x1A2E790 is the next part of those little portraits.
There's other portraits at 0x1A3E000.

I have yet to find those ones and the palettes for all of those.

EDIT:
Okay, I managed to get the remaining pics out.
Although, I didn't do it 100% myself. I relied on DSVania to get the remaining stuff.
Here's all of the other portraits:

Pause Menu:

Info Screen:

In-game mini portraits:

The Info and Pause images I feel do need to be reworked, but I think the mini portraits themselves are pretty unoffensive, and could be left as-is.

I'm glad you are changing the info screen pics. I thought maybe they were done.

Some of the pictures don't have black outlines. I think for constincy all pics should have outlines. Some already have them.

Siegfried Belmont provided portraits for the menu:
https://www.deviantart.com/inabiuchiha98/art/Jonathan-Morris-Ayami-Kojima-Style-810734470
https://www.deviantart.com/inabiuchiha98/art/Charlotte-Aulin-Ayami-Kojima-Style-810734567

Menu portraits (255 max and 15 max respectively. Didn't know the restrictions)

And the other menu:

(I used the GoS portrait for this Charlotte, it filled the rectangular space better and the muddy quality wasn't an issue at this low resolution and simple palette)

I'll see if I can figure something out for the Dual Crush thing, and then I'll consider the mini portraits.
