One REALLY good source for new character portraits and also character reactions in the Kojima style is Order of Ecclesia.
Here's the complete character portraits for that game:

Notice Shanoa's reactions, the last one could be implemented for Arikado's, the guy at the second row could be used for more reactions basis, we can even use some of those character faces for basis for the ones we are lacking (Celia, Dario and Dmitrii).

This is the option I'm considering at the moment.

That's a good idea, I think.

Also, I want to see if I can find some good artwork to match that of Celia, Dario and Dmitrii. I know there's gotta be some artwork there that fits them.
My plan was to maybe find some fan artists on deviantart and ask them to do it. :p

Not quite Kojima’s dreamy pastels, but it might work for Arikado perhaps.

For Julius, we might actually be able to use both mine and yours as different reactions, since the original anime ones are drawn from different angles too. Yours seems more neutral, while mine is moodier (second reaction).

I wouldn’t go overboard with the reactions. They could maybe be reduced to a few noticeable ones. The first three of Soma’s are pretty similar, for example.

I completely agree with the last paragraph, we could very well ditch most of the reaction portraits that seem to only add a few things like an open mouth or such. (Although I want to give Hammer's reactions I try, they seem to be rather easy) XD

And yes, going to DeviantArt is a great idea, the problem is that I can't seem to find any artists who are willing to do that, or even worse, that match Kojima's art.

If you guys find any artists, bring this topic to their knowledge, and let's hope they are kind enough to do the portraits for the remaining characters (at least for Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin might come later).

A reconstruction of Mad Soma, using part of the portrait from Aria of Sorrow

Surprised Arikado, using Shanoa’s mouth. The eyes didn’t translate well to this palette, so I kept the original ones. Fairly subtle like this, but I guess it works.

I believe Arikado's portrait needs to be redone or shrunk down more properly.  You can very much clearly see how it was shrunk down incorrectly as there's some spots where it just doubles the pixel width or even the height.
'We have to find some way to incorporate the general civilians in the plot.'

'We'll kill off children in the Juuban district with an infection where they cough up blood and are found hanging themselves from cherry blossom trees.'

Wait, yes. Something really went wrong. Not shrunk down, but scaled up by ShadowOne333. Not sure why. Hadn’t noticed it before. Shows how much I know my own spritework. :p

I have now extended my original sprite so it fills more space. That should give a better result than just making it larger.

Whoops...
Yeah sorry, I did notice that when I uploaded the original in-game image.
I redid the image without scaling it and had it working in my personal build of the game, but never even mentioned it here, I forgot to update the thread about that haha.

Sorry.

Those portraits you did Johann look amazing!
We are getting closer and closer to completing the portraits each time. :)

Amazing! Really looking forward to it!

Shadow, one question: Why do you do romhacking with so many different games?

Well, it's mostly because of personal preference.
I enjoy a lot of retro games, and if I see a way to improve over a certain aspect of a game that I thought was annoying to me, I would give it a try. That might be why I tend to go all over the place with hacks ranging from NES and now up to the DS.
It's a nice way to see how things change from generation to generation and also a bit of a challenge sometimes.

Well, I enjoy retro games as well, but I'm unable to hex edit  every retro game I've seen

Time for some side by side comparisons!

I'm holding back on the Soma, Julius and Yoko sprites until I've reworked them properly.
I'm thinking of maybe using the second Hammer pic to make the blushy portrait and modify that one a little bit more to open his mouth to closely resemble his original portrait.

Hammer might be done a bit better, yeah.

The rest looks good!

Maybe you should change that blotch in the middle of his forehead to be the same color as the rest of his forehead. How would that look?

That’s from the official artwork, actually.

Perhaps some dithering might make it less obvious.

I’m not sure whether a blushy portrait would work in this art style. Perhaps a smiling portrait might work?

I tried an open mouth for the depressed portrait, but he didn’t look very sad like that.

ShadowOne's depressed Hammer looks pretty good. But the smiling one looks weird. The Aria styled version looks like he's smiling really sarcastical(ly?).

It’s his neutral expression. Perhaps he suffers from this.
