How about Lemmings? Thats a very good game for MS-DOS.

Anything from Bloodlust Software, especially "Timeslaughter" and "Nogginknockers 2".

There's almost too many to list. Someone mentioned Darklands, that was amazing. Ultima VII was fun, VIII was panned but I really enjoyed both. You could seriously be a huge douche in both games and I always got a kick out of that.

Tyrian 2000 was an amazing vertical shooter I still play from time to time, amazing soundtrack, graphics, and upgrades.

Raptor - Call to the Shadows is basically the horizontal equivalent to Tyrian.

A lot of the later Advanced D&D games were super fun, specifically the two Dark Sun games and the Al-Qadim one were the best of that era IMO.

Fighting ports for DOS like the early Mortal Kombat games, Primal Rage, and a few others are the most arcade accurate from the time.

Albion is an amazing obscure RPG worth playing.

Imperium Galactica is a criminally overlooked space strategy game that's a lot of fun to play.

Daggerfall, Arena, Betrayal at Krondor, Mobius, Windwalker...

I could go on, but I'll spare the forum. I love classic PC gaming. A lot. To me that was a special era and a good period hardware set-up to play the games on is priceless.

I would've mentioned U8 if the controls weren't shit.

This and Commander Keen may actually have source ports made for PSP.  Wouldn't hurt to check out OpenTyrian or Commander Genius.

You're not wrong about that, the Avatar controls like a brick. Still, all the stupid things you could do in that game were priceless. That's sort of how I looked at 8 and 9; don't play them how they were intended to be played.

See How to be a complete bastard in Pagan.  (The same site gives a similar treatment to U9.)

On that note, lots of people seem to like Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret.

Great suggestions guys! Went ahead and got ahold of ScummVM too so I can finally getting around to playing all those older lucasarts point n clicks. Didn't realize there were 3 older Monkey Islands and an older Sam and Max.  :D

For ScummVM don't forget the classic Sierra titles like Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory, and Leisure Suit Larry. (Some of them have higher quality remakes for the first titles in the series).

Be sure to get the "CD" versions of the games where available, they include better music and full audio dialogue.

A few other good ones I don't believe were mentioned:

The Legend of Kyrandia
The Dig
Full Throttle
Sam and Max (you mentioned)
Indiana Jones

For Dosbox X-Com is a great classic (tip: you can edit the save game (more money to start?) on a PC before putting it on your flash card, it makes the game go faster, it's a long game otherwise).

Lastly Warcraft 1 and 2 are a must have for Dosbox.

BlackDog61

Xcom: UFO defense
Lemmings
Battle Isle
Double Dragon (if fast enough)
Xenon 2 (if fast enough)
Another World (curious how sound will play there)

Another World 20th anniversary edition was released a while ago. It's just like the original, only superior (gamepad support, remastered soundtrack, switching between the original and hi-res graphics etc.), so I guess it's the preferred way to play it now.

That might actually be another case where there's a native port of the engine.

What a coincidence!  I just came back here today after attempting to play Tiles of the Dragon on an online version of DOSBox.

Might you know how to get the game to actually run, instead of encountering Runtime error 202?

but would that run on a psp?
there are versions of Another World for most modern platforms. I believe the PSP version is available as well. the original dev is still maintaining this one, or so I've heard. he must really care about it.

Anyone got any suggestions for games I ought to try out?
I donno. There's a game I used to play on Commodore 64 called Congo Bongo. It's kindof like a 3D donkey kong or something. I think it may be on DOS too.
Come with me if you want to live.

Jorpho

In fact, although it has ports all over the place, Congo Bongo was originally an arcade game and is probably best enjoyed with MAME.

Might and Magic IV+V, I recommend you get a map though before you play it.

Ahh, Space Bats.  I was just thinking about that one today for some reason.  As I recall, the author was still selling it when he suddenly had a bad heart attack, and now it's been thrown into limbo.  Too bad.  It deserves more widespread acclaim.

On that note, Cash Invaders is pretty darn spiffy.
