Brigandine Grand Edition Restoring Jp Voices Project
« on: July 08, 2016, 01:34:33 am »
Recently i had the pleasure of receiving help from members on this site in the chat. I want to start thank Klarth, Henke and all the good willing souls who gave me advice regarding the matter.

Now, here's what's up: Said game has an english patch. It is hosted here. Said patch removes voices in dialogue sequences.

I've investigated the matter in two approaches:
-Files
-Code

*Files: I think this is not it. The VOICE.XA filesize in the patched iso is the same as the one in the clean iso.

*Code: Now this is where i'm stuck. I don't understand code so i oughta check the differences while running a simple voiced segment and an unvoiced segment. I found no differences in Dissasembly, Registry, or Memory codes.

I wanted to ask for some advice as to where should i turn my eyes, and continue looking. That's because, i'm not asking for my work cut out for me, but i don't even know what IS my work.

Thanks everyone in advance

No, that's not it.
I already have that file.
Sorry if i didn't explain myself properly.
What i meant is that that file is not affected by the patch.
Btw, i believe i sent you a private message as i've seen you working around with other matters of this same game so maybe your knowledge of the workarounds is similar to my situation.

I think that you are looking for the V2 with the voices changing, that isn't hosted here for a good SIZE reason. Check the description, it will lead you to the forum with links for the V2.

That's not it either. See, thing is:

V2 Has voice acting but in the movies only, and it's an english dub. That means dialogues have no voice whatsoever. Neither english nor japanese.

What i want is to restore those voices in the dialogues. Those are only japanese and are only present in a clean, unpatched iso.

Any kind of patch made by the one on that link removes those voices. You can check page 11 to see what i mean:

I'm very grateful for your responses, so i did a video explaining the issue correctly.

See, movies are ok. The str files. The voices are gone from gameplay. The movies are videos as you say, the gameplay sequences are not. This of course includes battle grunts that were also lost during the patch.

https://youtu.be/MPWIMe5tOc8

See, this are the voices that are lost. As you can see that is a normal story sequence which is NOT a movie sequence. That is not part of the .STR files.

The movies are good as they are, i don't need to mess with them. The problem lies in a normal story dialogue during gameplay.
Just normal and plain text has voices, and those voices are the ones who got removed with the english patch.

The movies were left intact, and they are fine as they are.

The next step I'd look at is the actual script. There may be commands embedded in the various text strings to play specific voice clips; these may have been changed/removed/dummied out during the creation of the patch.

I didn't even know these were cut deliberately.  I mean one's better than nothing by far and I appreciate the effort, but at this point we almost need a restoration of the translation.  Not that I'm asking anyone to do that; considering some of the random gameplay changes were of the realm of the hacker barely even remembering what he altered (and no I don't mean the separate patch), it sounds about as fun as picking porcupine needles out from a dog that had a bad run-in with one.  :-\

Speaking of the script there was a small patch that attempted some unfixing floating around, but the creator just threw his hands up after a while due to just how bad it got.  I'm pretty sure this particular problem wasn't addressed in it but it may be worth a look.

@Gideon
Where can i look for this script you say?.
I don't know very much of this, but i was searching for exactly something like that, maybe in the wrong places tho.
You see, i had two instances running; one voiced, one without voices.
Then, i opened a debugger for both instances and since i don't know disasembly code, i ought to find differences between the two instances.
I found nothing. Although, i was only looking with my eyes and leaning to my senses, since i don't know of a way to extract all the text from those windows to do a exact comparision (using some text comparing program or somethin'). I could be missing somethin'.
Am i in the right place, tho?

See, that's what i looked into, as i said in the main post.

@Chrono
Yeah i know of that patch from the people who helped me on the chat (klarth, henke, and others).
It says it fixes gameplay tho, so i'm not really AS interested. I played the patched GE version and i found some differences with Brigandine: Legend of Forsena (which i completed), but those were bearable. The voices cut are not.
I tried to make an account in that site tho, since that guy might know how to help me on this matter, i was intending to PM him but said site needs to verify your account by a moderator or somethin', which is takin' years

As you can see, everyone, in the page 11 of the main post in the swordofmoonlight forums (i posted the link already in another response), the creator removed the routines of voice acting because it didn't kinda match the time text scrolled or somethin'.
The gameplay isn't really a bother to me, but talking about the voice acting: i'd be willing to extract every single needle from the dog.
Now i don't think every single voice acting was removed one by one in every single dialogue, since the creator stated:
"If someone wishes to restore them back i can tell him what i know, but he'll need to change the auto-scroll time for every single sentence and i didn't do that because i didn't think it was worth the time".
So i believe the voice removal is some kind of global command. He wouldn't remove all of them one by one if it "wasn't worth the time".
But that's only a hunch there
