Okay guys, I need some help before I can progress with any dumping, and it concerns .tbl files.

BRR uses a system where 00 means "the next byte is a control code" and 0C, 0D, 0E and 0F tell the game to switch to one of four banks of font graphics. The problem is how to get this displaying correctly on WindHex32 EX with a .tbl file.

So for example the sentence may start with hiragana:
00 0C 68 45 58 8A
then switch to a single kanji
00 0D 4A
then back to hiragana
00 0C 55 37

Makes sense? So I need a way of letting WindHex32 EX know that when it sees 00 0D, it changes to a different table file, then when it sees 00 0C, it changes back, and so on. The table file format at http://transcorp.romhacking.net/scratchpad/Table%20File%20Format.txt calls it 'Table Switching', but having tried it I can't get it to work properly. If anyone can instruct me on how to do this, we'll be getting somewhere. :)

You'll probably need a custom dumper. Romjuice comes with source and I've modified it myself to do something like that; maybe look into that?

Once you've got a dump let me know and I'll be happy to have a look at the files.

I don't see why not, although the final decision should always be yours. This is sort of a rant, but romanization/translating names is the part of a project where everyone appears and wants to have some input, just to vanish whenever the real work starts. But seeing as you're doing this on your own, I don't see any problem.

Just keep in mind some romanizations are mostly educated guesses (specially with L-Gaim and Dunbine stuff).

In this case the subject matter has, at least in part, a well-established English canon. Unless they've got something wrong (or unless you can come up with something objectively better, and even that can be questionable) established canon should be adhered to.

That table format is currently not supported in full anywhere AFAIK. I was waiting for a finalized version to begin work on supporting it, but that hasn't happened.

You'll have to create your own dumper for a game like this. You could probably modify romjuice. Or you could use TableLib to roll your own. TableLib comes with a sample dumper. For your project, you would create 4 separate tables, load them into 4 separate table decoder classes, read/interpret the table swap control codes yourself, redirect to the appropriate table decoder, and output the text to a file. It's a pretty simple process.

Okay, let's get going! I decided to make table files in Shift-JIS since that's what WindHex32 EX uses. I'm manually going through the text, figuring out each kanji as I go along (I figure there's no need to work out all 781 kanji right now, I doubt the game even uses them all). Most of the names of weapons and characters use only katakana anyway, so it's not a big deal.

I've started with the weapons, for no reason other than they come first in the ROM. I've included all 86 here for you to look at, including my suggestions for English names (mostly they're just common sense, though with kanji translations I've taken a rough guess). I must stress these are NOT the final names: in fact, some of them are probably too long to fit on the menu.

Take a look, and I'll get to work on the units next (which I'm sure is where the spellings will be more contentious).

Anyway, comments welcome on the weapon names! :)

I'm not sure if the names are spelled correctly, but those are commonly spelled as:
Zack = Zaku (I know this should be spelled as Zaku)
Daiturn = Daitarn
Zanbot = Zambot

This is from any ship-class units?
60> 主砲 - Main Armament = Main Cannon/Gun

iirc this is from those Hanburabis?
45> 海ヘビ - Sea Snake = Sea Serpent, sounds better

21> 拡散メガ粒子砲 - Spread Mega Particle Gun
I think it's Scattering Mega Particle Gun

21> 拡散メガ粒子砲 - Scattering Mega-Particle Gun
27> ザンボットグラップ - Zambot Grapple
28> ザンボットバスタ― - Zambot Buster
29> ザンボットブロ― - Zambot Blow
30> ザンボットカッタ― - Zambot Cutter
32> ダイタ―ンファン - Daitarn Fan
33> ダイタ―ンミサイル - Daitarn Missile
34> ダイタ―ンザンバ― - Daitarn Zanber
35> ダイタ―ンハンマ― - Daitarn Hammer
36> ダイタ―ンキャノン - Daitarn Cannon
39> 大型メガ粒子砲 - Large Mega-Particle Cannon
43> メガ粒子砲 - Mega-Particle Cannon
57> ザクマシンガン改 - Zaku Machine Gun rev. [not sure of the significance of the kanji here]
71> 対空メガ粒子砲 - Anti-Aircraft Mega-Particle Cannon
77> 放電 - Electrical Discharge - Do you know what unit uses this? Would help.

Some references:
MS-08 Big Zam
MRX-009 Psyco Gundam (NOTE: "Psyco" is not a typo; it's short for "psycommu")
List of Universal Century Weapons (ref. Mega-Particle Cannons)
MS-06 Zaku II
Invincible Superman Zambot 3
Invincible Steel Man Daitarn 3

Zynk is semi-correct on 海ヘビ; it's been localized as "Sea Snake" in the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games, but it shows up as "Sea Serpent" on the Gundam Wikia page for RX-139 Hambrabi. Use your discretion here. Similarly, 主砲 shows up in my SRWA database as White Base's "Main Gun".

10> Bソ―ドライフル - B Sword Rifle
42> Bショットライフル - B Shot Rifle
B is short for Beam

I'd like to know what units these attacks are attached to before leaping to this conclusion.

If you go by the order those appear in, Beam Shot Rifle comes right after Beam Tomahawk, both of those are Sazabi's weapons. Now B. Sword Rifle seems to be a Dunbine weapon, so the "B" is probably Beam too. The Aura Battlers had a sword/rifle hybrid, and sometimes they attacked with a beam bayonet (thus sword).

I appreciate all your comments on this: I certainly want to get the translations as accurate as possible.

Meanwhile, I've got all the units for you, with my rough guesstimate regarding the English names. I'm sure you're going to tell me what they really are. :D

01> υガンダム - v Gundam
02> ザブングル - Xabungle
03> ガバメント - Government Type
04> クラブタイプ - Crab Type
05> バスト―ル - Bastole
06> ドラムロ - Drumlo
07> ハンブラビ - Hanburabi
08> エルガイム - L-Gaim
09> Zガンダム - Z Gundam
10> Aテンプル - A Temple
11> ダンバイン - Dunbine
12> ビルバイン - Bilbine
13> ガンダム㎎Ⅱ - Gundam mkII
14> サザビ― - Sazabee
15> オ―ジェ - Orge
16> ハイザック - Hi-Zack
17> アロ―ン  - Alone
18> グル―ン  - Grune
19> サイコガンダム - Psyco Gundam
20> 巡洋確 - Solid Cruiser
21> ドラグ―ン - Dragoon
22> ドラゴ―ネ - Dragone
23> ドラコ―ン - Drakhon
24> セント―ル - Centaur
25> アト―ルⅤ - Atoll V
26> レプラカ―ン - Leprechaun
27> ドラン - Dran
28> ダイタ―ン3 - Daitarn 3
29> ビグ・ザム - Big Zam

32> Wギャリア - W Gallia
33> エルガイム㎎Ⅱ - L-Gaim mkII
34> ビアレス - Biareth
35> ズワァ―ス - Swarth
36> ヤクト・ド―ガ - Yakuto Douga
37> サザビ―.02 - Sazabee .02
38> H・サザビ― - H Sazabee
39> H・ビアレス - H Biareth

NOTE: the Japanese is really "mk" not "mg", it was just the closest I could find in the Shift-JIS set.

As for which weapons attach to which unit, I'm not sure. Perhaps if I do a bit more hacking I can find the connection, but I don't know as of yet. Leave me to it and I'll get back to you.

01> υガンダム - v Gundam (Make sure you're using the greek letter nu here, not just a v)
03> ガバメント - Government (Just "Government" is fine)
07> ハンブラビ - Hambrabi
10> Aテンプル - Ashura Temple
14> サザビ― - Sazabi
15> オ―ジェ - Original Auge
16> ハイザック - Hizack
17> アロ―ン  - Arorne
18> グル―ン  - Grune - Seems like it should be G.Roon
20> 巡洋確 - Solid Cruiser - Cannot confirm
21> ドラグ―ン - Dragoon - Cannot confirm
22> ドラゴ―ネ - Dragone - Cannot confirm
23> ドラコ―ン - Drakhon - Cannot confirm
25> アト―ルⅤ - A.Taul V
27> ドラン - Doran - Cannot confirm, but Doran is what I have in my SRWAG file for this. Seems to be a Xabungle unit.
32> Wギャリア - Walker Gallier - Xabungle main unit upgrade. Very little definitive English sources for Xabungle stuff.
34> ビアレス - Vierres
35> ズワァ―ス - Zwarth
36> ヤクト・ド―ガ - Jagd Doga
37> サザビ―.02 - Sazabi .02
38> H・サザビ― - H Sazabi
39> H・ビアレス - H Vierres

I've never seen anyone come up with a definitive romanization for ビルバイン; I've seen it as Bilbine, Billbine, and Villbine in various places.

I'm kind of in a hurry and I wasn't able to immediately confirm a few of these; left those in the list for further research. Included sources where possible, but Xabungle in particular is really hard to find English source material for.

Additionally: I cannot stress enough the importance of the "nu" character instead of a lowercase v; there's also a V ("Victory") Gundam that doesn't show up in Banpresto properties until the PS1 era, but you should still differentiate between the two.

I can confirm the Doran is indeed the one from Xabungle - it's a white flying two-seater.
The Auge in this game seems to be just "Auge", not "Original Auge" (the original Auge has a red cross flag on its left shoulder).

About Dragoon/Dragone/Dracon, there's a Dragoon in Dragonar (not present in this game), but I don't remember it in any of those other series - probably an original enemy?

Edit: I've looked into it, and indeed they're originals.

You really don't need to rush, this isn't going to be done overnight for sure, but thanks very much for your diligent research!

I do know (now) that it's a nu, i was just too lazy to write it. Rest assured it'll be fine in the game. ;)

Good catch! I'm not much of an L-Gaim person myself but I saw this in my SRW4 unit list and was like "oh, okay." Plus I was thinking maybe it was an acronym or something I guess?

Neat! The presence of Douglas Faust and Lord Gerster seem to imply that this list is perhaps not exhaustive as well.

My SRW table files usually include something like 0A=(v) or 0A=(nu) to differentiate :)

Wギャリア - W Gallia

The W is for Walker. So if space is needed, perhaps just W. Gallia or something.

I looked at some of the model kits for romanizations and most say Gallia, but a few (including some older ones) do say Galliar, one even says Garrier. Gallia seems to be the most common though.

BUMP! ;)

It's time to look at the characters in the game, although these are only the short on-screen names: most if not all are repeated inside the menu screen where they get a biography. As usual I've taken a wild stab in the dark, but I'm hoping you guys can put me right.
