That depends. Are you changing the character's graphics up to be something else, or are you sticking with the original cast?

If not, then I don't see the point, unless you like to pretend that Donkey Kong Jr is the normal Donkey Kong. Which I used to do when I was young haha.

Edit: Nevermind, just saw in your other thread that you're planning on changing up the characters, so yeah, go for it haha.

Is there program to edit the music and text in the game? Cause im really wanting to do that for my SMK Hack

As far as I know, there are no specific tools for SMK.

I thought I'd give this game a look, because lots of people are talking about it. Keep in mind, my expertise is in NES, not SNES. I looked at the entire ROM in YY-CHR, and didn't see any text graphics...must be compressed. So I opened it in SNES9x with Geiger's debug tools, and dumped the VRAM from the title screen, when some text was on it. Opened the dump in YY-CHR. I see the text. I made up a little table file (just a text file, with lines like this...)

21=X
22=Y
23=Z
24=?

And opened the ROM in Windhex, and opened my table file. I only saw a tiny bit of readable text at offset 1cb00...(see attached pic)

and changing these values only affected the Time Trial screen (where it says 'course select')

I looked closer at the Title Screen with the text on it...and the text is actually sprites. Maybe they are stored in some way that the letters are not actually next to each other in the ROM, since each sprite uses 4 bytes (I think). Anyway. This would take more time than I want to spend right now, but maybe you should ask someone who's already hacked this game.


As for music hacking...there is at least 1 maybe more music tracker designed to work with Nintendo SNES games, and might work. I know someone else here has changed the music in SMK.

I've decided to start over my SMK hack and if you wanna help me I WILL feature you in the credits

AND I am taking track requests from either an F-zero game (Excluding X and GX) or a Mario Kart Game (Excluding 64 and 8 )

What a shame, you've spent so long working on it as well...



Seriously though, Super Mario Kart is a great game and people will be interested in helping you with it but you need to show that it is help you need and not just someone to do it all for you. Stick to one project thread, post what you have managed to do so far and what you are stuck with. As you progress people will gain interest and you'll get on a lot better than promising people a credit for doing all the work in a hack that is never going to materialise (which is what it looks like just now, prove me wrong )

I know it might look like people aren't being helpful, but you need to understand that every few months a person pops up and talks alot about their great hack plans. Then, about a month or two later, we never hear from them again. So, people are reluctant to put much work into a project that is potentially doomed.

So, what we are really asking from you is more than some name changes. Show us some artwork (even if it's just concept art, or just some sketches on paper)...show us the new level designs. Show us another hack that you've successfully completed... even if it's just a graphic hack of Mario Bros. And, if the ideas are good, people will help.

I could make you a text editor tool, maybe, but given my current schedule, it wouldn't be done till like end of 2017. As you see, I was having trouble even locating the text in the ROM...it takes a lot of time to do a project like that. I'd have to locate the offset of every line of text in the game, and program a way to convert ASCII input to the game's text table, make sure it doesn't overflow, game test every line. So, you can see why someone would be reluctant to do all that.
