Translations: Japanese to English, What do I do first?
« on: March 13, 2016, 11:29:18 pm »
I was looking for an English translation for Pingu - Sekai de 1ban Genki na Penguin, but I have been out of luck trying to find one. I was wondering if anyone out there has been working on one or can give me enough info to try to make one myself. Keep in mind this would be my first hack and I dont know Japanese.

Check out the documents section. There is a lot of great guides in there. As far as the translation goes, there is usually someone on RHDN willing to help. If you do get the script dumped, you can send it my way if you like.

Glib remark. Play the game, or at least watch a video of it being played. Apparently it is for the original gameboy (video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiXVku7wBjY ) and that might have helped.

Anyway you do want to know what goes -- say I wanted to hack the thing that said Pingu on the title screen. As I have seen it I know it is probably going to be graphics and spending 5 hours trying to find a text rendering engine (probably like a lot of the other text on the screen or elsewhere or like I see in other games) is going to be a waste of time.

Anyway the getting started link is probably what you want to read. The GB/GBC hardware reference of choice is the pandocs http://problemkaputt.de/pandocs.htm and the hacking emulator of choice for the GB/GBC right now is BGB debugger http://bgb.bircd.org/

Thank you both, but now I got to figure out how to use both the tools. The BGB debugger I hope can get most of it done. I hope in the next week I can find some more info on using it.

Does anyone know of a good video that will show me how to use BGB debugger?
