Hello, after completing one of my personal dream hacks with my Hugh Baldwin hack release I decided to go to another dream hack that I have always wanted made but until now lacked the means to do it, and that is to make Genya Arikado (Alucard alter ego) a playable character within Aria of Sorrow!

Special thanks to the very talented sprite artist Julian Ordonez Paz for making me a Genya Arikado sprite sheet to match up with Soma.

Now this hack is in the very early stages at the moment, for 1 I still have to wait until Julian finishes up the remaining sprites and secondly I still have a great deal of Soma's sprites to replace.

Here is a little preview of my current work,

- Update -

Well here is a bit of news/updates concerning this hack, as of a few days ago I finally got the remaining sprites from Julian and replaced 95% of Soma's sprites with them and thus the hack is nearing completion.

One obstacle I ran into is that weirdly enough Aria of Sorrow for some odd reason separates all the weapon animations/sprites separately from Soma, the only weapons that are a part of soma's basic sprites and animation or the regular and short swords, all the other weapons have to be edited manually be me to match Genya Arikado since the arm itself is attatched to each individual weapon which is a pain lol.

Like say for instance your using a gun or whatever and when you use it soma's old arm is going to pop up simply because its a part of the gun sprites and thus has no bearing on replacing all of Soma's sprites.

Anyways, while editing these weapons I decided to edit the Ronginus spear to give it some characteristics from the Alucard Spear, here are some images with filter and without filter,

I'll be releasing a video of his hack in motion really soon, once that happens that means the hack itself will be released within a day or 2 after the video's release so stay tuned. ;)

- UPDATE -

Ok so this game is hack is kinda shaping up to be a quasi sotn sequel lol, play as a modern day Alucard (Genya Arikado) and it featuring these new elements from SOTN, first I replaced the demon transformation with his SOTN gargoyle/demon form and now here are some more nods to symphony of the night, I have replaced the flying armor soul with the Faerie Familiar and the Alastor soul with the Sword Familiar (fully leveled form), also thanks to FanOfDracula I was able to get a better palette to work with for the Demon transformation to give it a color akin to Dracula's own previous demon forms, so here are the images!

All I have left now is to replace the Balmung sword with a weapon version of the Sword Familiar and also replace the Imp with the Demon familiar from SOTN and I should be done with the hack assuming I don't get any more ideas for more SOTN related sprite edits.

It's really hard to see the details and stuff with that filter.  Gives it a really 'smudged' look.
'We have to find some way to incorporate the general civilians in the plot.'

'We'll kill off children in the Juuban district with an infection where they cough up blood and are found hanging themselves from cherry blossom trees.'

Can't appreciate any of the sprite work, due to heavy filtering.  :'(

I find the filter looks nice, personally. I guess I'm in the minority here. However the images looks wider than taller, this is definitely a problem.

THANK YOU, good to see I'm not the only one who thinks the filter looks good, and regarding the wider images I use a widescreen monitor so that is the reason why its more wider than taller.

Ok here are some images without the filter.

Yeah, it looks good. I look forward to this hack.

Just so you know, when you submit this hack to rhdn the rules state that you can't use a screen filter when uploading screenshots.

Yes I know, this actually isn't my first hack released here, I released another hack called Castlevania COTM Hugh Baldwin Hack not to long ago so I know that the rules state no filter.

Its just that I tend to play my games with filter and when I take a ingame picture I just never bother to tick the filter off which is why I tend to post filtered images of my hack, but if someone requests it or if the rules deem it mandatory then I make sure to go back and get some unfiltered ones.

Where's the gameplay video?

It's right here,

Sorry I forgot to post it here, the video has been up for a few days now and the hack has also been released.

I'm now working on some updates for the hack, for one I decided to edit the name and the description for the old souls that I replaced with the SOTN ones such as the sword familiar, alucard shield, demon familiar, and faerie familiar, and the Devil/Gargolye form.

I also changed the name of the Flame Demon soul to Hellfire and the Demon Lord soul to Dark Inferno.

The original post download link has been updated with these new changes as well, be sure to download the new version.

Here are some images of the new names and descriptions.

Something else I plan to do is change the story of Aria of Sorrow, something along the lines of a "what if" type of story where Soma never showed up and Genya Arikado (Alucard) was forced to take action instead.

Here's some things you should do to re-record that video better.

go to options, click frame skip, set to 0.

go to Tools, then start recording.

My Frame skip is always off, I never turn on frame skip.

I thought the video was recorded nicely personally, any bit of skipping you saw could have been possibly the work of the recording software I use called LiteCam, but the frame skip is always set to 0 when I play my games, I like to play my games without using such a feature since I feel it ruins the fluidity.

Did you do pallete hacking in your hacks? If so do you know anything about GBC color hacking? I'd really like to see a recolour of Castlevania Adventure. Those mudmen should not be green. Its in the first volume of konami collection for GBC.

Not too bad though something about the walk animation feels odd to me as if Arikado is 'spazzing' around during  his walk animation.  Some things need to be ironed out but pretty good hack.

Yes I use palette hacks and I will look into your Castlevanai Adventure request. ;)

And Sinis

Spazz out? I'm not sure what you mean by that, I don't see any "spazzing" within his walk or run animation, could you point out exactly when this happens within the gameplay video from start to finish?

I will be more then happy to have a closer look at it.

During his normal walk animation it feels like there is extra jerking around.  Don't know if its due to the fact that he's mimicking Soma's exact movements as it feels like he's a tad smaller.  It might just be all me though.  Gonna download the hack to see and if it is please my eye sight please disregard my statement.

Update to my statement.  There is some slight jerking in Arikado's torso animation compared to the original, Soma's torso movement.  Soma's is fluid and in line with his legs compared to Arikado's to where is legs are perfectly fine but his torso kinda jerks slightly.  I don't know how to read GBA YYCHR's properly yet so I'll get his walk animation from screenshots and see where the areas are at to properly point out things.  I'll be busy tomorrow so it will have to be Tuesday to point the areas out in a GIF.

These are hastily done as I've got to stuff again here shortly so I don't have any time to spruce things up at all so this is a crappy presentation lol.

Soma's animation is the normal bobbing up and down compared to Arikado's jerk from left to right in his torso.  His legs might need a tad touching up but not too much.  I know that Arikado does the normal bobbing up and down while walking but its being slightly hidden in the jerk.  I know that I didn't get all of Soma and Arikado's animations in the GIF but felt it was enough to cover from what I saw in the differences.

Hope this clarifies stuff.
