ROM hacking with a PS3?

I will admit my knowledge on the topic is scarce, but there is something called AsbestOS that is pretty much Linux for PS3. The downside is once you install it, you can never use your PS3 for games again.

But I guess you can ROM hack on a PS3 by running AsbestOS and using whatever ROM hacking programs that work on the PC on the PS3. If there is a Windows compatibility issue, there is something called WINE that allows some Windows programs to work in Linux.

I must admit I have not kept up with PS3 Linux since it got restored and we saw all the hacks a couple of years back. Hopefully you are on firmware 3.55 or earlier.
I would say something about the browser but trying to use the ps3 browser is painful and suggesting you try something on it would be cruel.
WINE will not do anything here, you will need a full virtualised machine to use windows which is not good on the PS3 (though if you want to restrict yourself to DOS you might get somewhere).

Short answer there is you could do something you already knew about but I would hate to work up.

You do not need a fancy PC for ROM hacking, give or take some of the really crazy emulation and searching programs which you do not need to use for 99% of ROM hacking, so I would instead suggest picking up a cheap XP or refurb laptop. People seem to be giving them away these days.
