Good PS2 emulator
« on: July 17, 2015, 12:24:02 am »
While I'm taking some time off from my own project, I started playing some older games on the PS2. I was playing DBZ Budokai 3 last night, and while the game suffered from just a SLIGHT slowdown on PCSX2 when I was fighting, the overworld during the story mode looked like straight GARBAGE... The graphics were just completely OFF. That's the best way I can describe it. Not smooth, certain things would show if I moved forward just a bit, but then would disappear again if I moved forward again. I had a very similar experience trying to play Megaman X collection. I know PS2 emulation is probably rather new, but the experience of seeing a game that I loved so much on my console look just so BAD on the emulator really broke the experience for me. PCSX2 seems to be the preferred emulator from what I've already seen, just wondered if anyone else had an opinion, or could point me to an emulator that I might have a better experience with.

Last I knew, PCSX2 is literally the only PS2 emulator. (as much as Dolphin seems to be the only GameCube emulator. And I don't think there's been a major push for an original Xbox emulator, just to round out gen 6.)

pSX author was working on adding PS2 emulation to pSX, but then he disappeared off the face of the earth, it seems. :(

pcsx2 has pretty good compatibility for emulating a more recent system but unless you have a really fast cpu and decent graphic card most games don't run at full speed but I've had pretty good success running about all the games I've wanted to play on a fairly old dual core laptop.  If you have slowdown issues messing around with the various speedhacks and video plugin settings will usually lead to better playability, messing with the video plugin settings can help with some graphics issues but they're usually harder to fix.  Playing the Megaman X games on emulators for the original systems would work a lot better as snes & psx emulators run pretty much any game at full speed without issues.  For cross platform titles I've heard good things about dolphin's speed and compatibility but never used it.

I guess checking the configuration guide http://pcsx2.net/config-guide/official-english-pcsx2-configuration-guide.html cannot hurt,in case you haven't?
Also, I vaguely remember there being a list of settings vs games, but I cannot find it back... Anyone would have this handy?
[EDIT]
Maybe the compatibility list's detail can help you with your game? It's on the PCSX2 forums, head here and search?
