Those Catchy, Catchy Tunes...
« on: May 25, 2015, 01:17:35 pm »
I'm sure we've all at one point or another have heard music in a game so catchy, that we can't help but hum/or whistle it's tune.

There are a plethora of great, catchy, hummabe gems in the world of video games. What are some of your favorites? Ever caught yourself in awkward moment because you blanked out, and suddenly notice your whistling Earthbound music around a crowd of total strangers?

Share your fovorite songs and/or stories, and let the music take you away!

Well one unexpected catchy tune for me was in Blue Dragon.  I listened to it for an hour while I doing a household chore.  After that it got added to my master playlist.  :D  I usually loop it a few times once it comes up.  LOL  Thanks Nobuo!

I might be good with this. I'm a huge fan of video game music. There are lots of games with great music so I'll just focus on some "catchy" stuff (and two very different examples).

Plok had some pretty catchy music and I would recommend many Tim and Geoff Follin soundtracks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-k-0eMMqNY

Plok also had some pretty impressive displays of what could be achieved with the SNES sound hardware. Check out that intro music. That probably has the best acoustic guitar, harmonica and electric guitar that you will hear in any SNES game (sound quality wise). They actually sound like the instruments they are supposed to be.

I always liked Gremlins 2 as well. Reminds me of early Konami stuff. Wouldn't seem out of place in a Castlevania game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5ACT19fxaI

That's the sort of thing I would know about. I'm mainly just an NES and SNES kinda guy.

I'll try to avoid posting classic stuff everyone on here has already heard of.

La-Mulana Remake:"Fearless Challenger" (Gate of Guidance):
https://youtu.be/CnufDNWKUjI   (give it a bit to get passed the overly dramatic intro -- it gets awesome)

Pretty much anything from the 'Wandering Souls' soundtrack (which was just songs taken from various Touhou games).  Notably:
https://youtu.be/c7WhJta1_sw  <-  "The Dark Blowhole"
https://youtu.be/aKZ-CJanUyE  <-  "Heartfelt Fancy"
https://youtu.be/XeTleYgxvjA  <-  "At the End of Spring"

Terraria has some good tunes.  The mushroom song is probably my favorite, if for no other reason than it's just so weird:
https://youtu.be/HR9SW5n4Lok

I know I said I'd stray away from songs everyone knew already, but I have to mention Cave Story - Grasstown since it's so under-appreciated.  Seriously, it's easily the best song on the soundtrack, and everyone always glances past it.  Give it another listen:
https://youtu.be/X8WNP8U4euY

EDIT:

This one is kind of a cheat, because he just took random chiptunes and used them for the game... but...

Wormland from Super Turrican 2 (SNES).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzTuegPnqF8

Of course there's others but I can't think of them right now. Check the Donkey Kong Country 2 OST for really good tunes.

By the way, the video I linked to is part of a "100 Best SNES Music" list so maybe you'll find something you like there.

WARNING!!! It can get catchy!
Jungle Stage (Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, Gameboy Color).

Oops (Zed's Theme) from Wild Arms - https://youtu.be/GavGCnFGfJQ
That one too! I long thought I was the only one, lol.

I usually like the songs in SNES RPGs such as Chrono Trigger and Tales of Phantasia the most, but I've had the theme Castle Pandemonium from Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls stuck in my head for some time now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNE1wvzU-e8
"Truly, if there is evil in this world, it lies within the heart of mankind."
- Edward D. Morrison (Tales of Phantasia)

some themes there are still in my mind, although I haven't heard them for sometimes more than 20 years :

Space Harrier main theme and bonus stage theme (arcade, SMS)

Outrun (all 4 themes) (arcade, SMS)

Wonderboy III the Dragon's Trap (SMS), castle theme (remake from WB2 last dungeon theme), Village theme, Sea theme

Super Fantasy Zone (MD)

Sonic Star Light Zone Theme (MD)

Gargoyle's Quest (GB)

Of course, Super Mario Bros and Tetris.

I exclude RPG (Phantasy Star 2 & 3, Final Fantasy 6) because music is inherently good to the genre.

Lot's of great listed tunes!

Here are some songs that I've been getting stuck in my head while playing around with FF4 constantly and cannot stand to hear certain tracks anymore (I'm looking at you, Red Wings and Baron Castle themes.)

Forgive me for the lack of youtube links/correct song names, as my internet is horrible and I'm not familiar with some songs' actual names.

DKC2's Lava level music

Chrono Trigger - Undersea Palace

Chrono Trigger - Sewer Music

Valkyrie Profile - The sad, amazing guitar track hard mostly during Arngim's scene and the town it takes place in.

Final Fantasy Legend III (SaGa III) - Talon Cave/ Inside the Talon tracks

Wild Arms - World Map Theme,  Dungeon theme used in the Sewers under Filgaia when shit hits the fan during the Festival

Secret of Evermore - That trippy harp/guitar tune that plays when you get launched up on the mountain with the alchemit at the summit durng the Prehistoric era.

Diablo 2's version of Tristram's theme (I could listen to thig looped for an hour an not notice the time fly by one bit. It's also the music I use as the menu music in Super Smash Bros Brawl. +1 for soft-modded Wiis!)

Pokemon Red/Blue - Rocket Hideout in Celedon City. It sounds so evil and crazy for a Game Boy tune. I'd love to learn it on guitar.

Final Fantasy VII - Final Dungeon music and the music heard in the cave north of the Chocobo Farm

Conker's Bad Furday - the melody for the main hub area (where you steal the queen bee's hive from the wasps), the theme for the Dung Beetles area, and the music that plays when your flying around as a bat killing the little british squirrel villagers.

Actraiser - Fillmore, Bloodpool, and the music played during the Sim Earth portions of the game.

Fable - Oakvale, Temple of Light (sounds amazing played backwards with echo effects and some reverb)

Jurrasic Park (NES/Gameboy) - The music that plays when your running around the park is permastuck in my head for all time. There's an epic version of this song on Dwelling of Duels called Jurrasic Bass.

Resident Evil 2 - The music playing when your in the save room is another song permastuck in my head (both of them). There's an amazing version of this on one of Dwelling of Duels' horror theme months.

I feel I should mention that some of the battle themes in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest are quite possibly the most badass SNES themes ever composed. Prepare for whiplash.

EDIT: I don't know how many times I've heard these tunes and I still can't get over them.

While a lot of music is good, I wouldn't call most catchy in the sense that they loop in my head afterwards. If I'm playing a certain RPG in a streak, the regular battle theme is usually the one with the highest probability of staying in my head, as it repeats so many times. The battle theme in Chrono Trigger is a good example of familiar repetition of this kind.

Here is a theme that is catchier than most you can come up with, for obvious reasons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ_7ipJ6Cx8

Here is another that even I could sing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpEzYEoV9qY

Out of the themes that are not heard that often, this one from Lufia II is catchy in the sense that I am occasionally reminded of it even though I have barely heard it (had to check the OST to find the link): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fzm2O4Zt-k

If catchy means something with a strong and a clear melody, there is plenty of that similar to what many have mentioned. Uematsu, Sasai, Mitsuda, Tel and so on.

That game's soundtrack is not only totally amazing, but is also the only redeeming part of that otherwise terrible, terrible game.
