Translations: Dark Half (SNES) Released by AGTP
« on: May 24, 2015, 08:16:27 pm »

Update By: Gideon Zhi

Long has been the wait for a completed Dark Half translation, but in association with Eien ni Hen and with the blessings of Klepto Software, Aeon Genesis has pulled it off! AGTP picked up Dark Half about nine months ago after Eien ni Hen talked about it in the Rom-Hacking Histories podcast. Hacking began in earnest when Eien ni Hen turned in a script about four months ago. The end result is the polished, high-quality, and hopefully bug-free translation available now! This one has been a long time coming, so please enjoy it!

Only nine months? You mean it couldn't be finished sooner?

Congratulations , Aeon Genesis!
I'm off for some time. If for some weird, strange, and important reason, you need to talk to me, just send me a PM and probably I'll read it whenever I come back.

Oh Yeah! This one is beautiful!

Funny you mentioned Dark Halk as one the of the games that got you into romhacking, cos' for my part this is one of the few which got me acquainted to fan-translations (the others were Front Mission and Super Robot Taisen 3-4), honestly I didn't even know fan-translations existed, in the end I stumbled upon dejap and zophar. Cripes time flies...

Anyway I wanted to play this one so badly.

I'm glad you didn't give up.

Cheers AGTP, Eien ni Hen and SirYoink. \o/

This is cool. I've been wanting to play this one for a while. Still eagerly awaiting (SNES) Sugoro Quest and Ladystalker. :)

Yaaaay! I'm so happy to see this project finally finished! A big thanks to Gideon Zhi and the playtesters who made it happen. :)

Only nine months? You mean it couldn't be finished sooner?

I'm actually surprised it didn't take longer, honestly. First, Gideon re-dumped the script and I inserted my old translation into the new script, making edits and corrections along the way. This took about 3 months, I think.

Then Gideon focused on the hacking, which was pretty difficult. He also edited the script, which was fine with me. Last came playtesting, which took about 1-2 months.

A lot of work went into completing this project, and it really shows.
Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans... and pants to match. The monkey clown horrible karate round and yummy like cute small baby chick would beat the donkey.

In snes9xgx:
I saw that in the battles when you use Falco in the worldmap and other areas, when you select the enemy to
attack, the window with the enemy name is 80% transparent, or something, that not happen in other areas,
only if there is a bright area.

Only a typo, in the first town when you use Rakyu, the save guy say a "es" instead "Yes"

The transparency thing happens everywhere, it's just more apparent with Falco because his backgrounds are brighter. It's like that in the original game; I didn't change it.

The save thing... those prompts are an endless headache :(

I only ever lost the Y when I was frameskipping, but rarely. Could never replicate it otherwise so I blamed it on emulation.

Oh man! I've wanted to play this game in English ever since discovering the existance of fan-translations back in '08.  Haven't been this excited over the release of a translation since Live-aLive or Slayers. Thank you very much for completing this!

I thought about this for a long time and this new SNES patch is the perfect exemple of what's wrong.

The current "ROM / ISO Information:" field is wrong/incomplete/mismatched/misleading for about 70% of the SFC/SNES patches currently hosted on RHDN.

Case in point, this new Dark Half's release.
On the project page, we have:
------
ROM / ISO Information:
CRC32: AD50E7AE
MD5: 525D54D729E0D02BDFFA98A928592664
------

Not only the values are wrong, we don't even know if these are intended for the source rom or patched rom.

I propose the following change for all SFC/SNES patches from now on:
---------------------------------------
ROM / ISO Information:
Source rom: (name of the ROM, if possible following no-intro naming scheme)
Header: Yes / No (should the source ROM be headered or not)
MD5: (md5 of the source ROM)
CRC32: (crc32 of the source ROM)
---
Patched rom:
MD5: (md5 of the patched ROM)
CRC32: (crc32 of the patched ROM)
---------------------------------------

Using this format, there would be no questions about which rom to use, if the patch was applied correctly or any possible other uncertainty.

Currently for Dark Half, it would look like:

---------------------------------------
ROM / ISO Information:
Source rom: Dark Half (Japan).sfc
Header: No
MD5: 55108013F875DB3B39DA04B8F58489AB
CRC32: 7B9793B1
---
Patched rom:
MD5: 1095474903C14921A17EDB56A2D58870
CRC32: 18877841
---------------------------------------

What do you guys think?
edit: if it were only me, i'd even remove CRC32 infos altogether and base everything on/versus MD5 which is much more reliable.

The MD5 and CRC32 were calculated using Hex Workshop directly off of the base ROM that was used to hack the game, and were directly copy/pasted into the field. If they're wrong, it's Hex Workshop's fault :p
