I've frozen Mario's v-position for the express purpose of entering that door.

Spoiler:
Not only does it not go anywhere, it isn't even a real door!

It seems that RHDN has finally taken down my Megaman Origins patch.  It took a lot longer than 24-48 hours.  I wonder if they were taking a look at the ROM after using the patch?

Yeah, so to play it safe, I'm going to keep Mario Bros. off of SMB2, as much as I really wanted it on there.  If people want to play Mario Bros., they are more than welcome to get the game.

I felt that because SMB3 had a Mario Bros. type of mini-game on it for 2 Player mode, that since I was doing a 2-Player hack of SMB2, Mario Bros. seemed like a fitting bonus game to be able to select on the titlescreen, and at the same time made this hack another multi-cart hack.

I read this:
• 2-Player Mode

For the first time, you will be able to play this game with 2 Players.  At the end of the game, when it shows how many times you used a character, if you are playing a 2 Player game, it will show how many times Player 2 used each character.
And I think: "Oh, yes! At least I'll be able to play this game at the same time with a comrade! So cool! My childhood dream becomes real at last!"

But then...
• And last but not least, 2 Player Mode will be fairier than in the other SMB games.  For instance, whoever wins a level, the next player gets a turn.  Same if player dies.  The next person gets to go.

"NoOOOOoooOOoo! It's the regular old fashioned 2-Player mode! Why...?!"

Anyway, it still seems like a nice hack including that extra world and all that. Can you show some screenshots or will it be a surprise?
Still haven't found a way to implement Mario Bros. as a patch? Is it definitely discarded?

How hard do you think it would be to implement a realtime 2-Player mode? Is it technically reasonable?

"NoOOOOoooOOoo! It's the regular old fashioned 2-Player mode! Why...?!"

What's the problem with taking turns playing in 2-Player mode, whether you win or die?  It really is the most fair.  I remember playing SMB1 with my older sister when I was a kid, and we played 2-Player mode.  She got annoyed at me because I kept beating each level, and she never got a turn to play.  And she had a point.  What's the point in playing 2-Player mode if the winner gets to keep going until he or she dies, and the other player never gets a turn?

In all honesty 2-Player mode would be more fair and probably a lot more fun if both players get to go along with each other, instead of one of the players falling way behind, or taking a while to get a turn.

Anyway, it still seems like a nice hack including that extra world and all that. Can you show some screenshots or will it be a surprise?

I will be showing progress of the hack as I go. :)  I'm even considering making a Development Blog thread soon, to show some of the code I'm using, and what part I'm at on the project.  Screenshots will be shown when there is something visually to be shown.  Right now I'm doing a lot of the pre-work (setting up the ROM and bootup screen).

Still haven't found a way to implement Mario Bros. as a patch? Is it definitely discarded?

Yes.  I truly truly wanted it in there, but for legal reasons, I've decided to leave it out.  I'm playing it safe.

How hard do you think it would be to implement a realtime 2-Player mode? Is it technically reasonable?

What do you mean by "real-time"?  Do you mean both players on the screen at once?

I am definitely interested in this. There just are no real quality SMB2 hacks that I've found. I played the only one that was finished as far as I could tell, and it was difficult to say the least. I don't see any point in these RIDICULOUSLY HARD Mario hacks. I love SMB as a series and I want to play a game that is similar to the originals, not custom built so that only the programmer can beat the damned thing. I played "Newer" SMB Wii at my friend's house in Kentucky and I was like "Now THAT is how its done". I'm very intrigued by the new level being added, and I wish I had gotten your Megaman Origins game before it got pulled b/c that sounds really cool. Were you originally going to put MM3 on that compilation? My same friend was telling me about a combined MM1 and 2 rom file that was supposed to be really good. Would love to see some screenshots too.
Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest... is silence...

That's was I expected when first reading your post, so yes.

I don't know about any other combined MM1/MM2 ROM other than the one I did.  Your friend was probably referring to my Megaman Origins hack.  This is the thread:

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,19618.0.html

The only new screenshot is the bootup screen, which allows you to select either game.  The other screenshots are taken from the actual games.  And yes, if all 3 ROMs used the same graphics format, I would have made this Wily Wars for the NES.

That's was I expected when first reading your post, so yes.

Simultaneous 2-player mode, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles for Mario, I imagine would be very difficult to pull off.  I'm not interested in doing it anyway.

By the way, will you be making a new Continue screen?  (So bland, the Continue screen.)

I am definitely interested in this. There just are no real quality SMB2 hacks that I've found.
Legend of the Blob Bros 2 is pretty neat, especially some of the later levels.  (Note that you will, at one point, have to balance a mushroom block on a cloud.  Apparently that works in the original game, but as I was completely oblivious to that, I thought the game was broken at first.)

Ya know, that's not a bad idea.  Given how much room there is on the Game Over/Continue screen, I might be able to add an image or something.

How cool would it be to make the Game Over screen just like in Zelda 2?  A shadow of Wart appears on a red screen, and you hear some kind of sound?

Or Mario in bed waking up, and instead of the dream cloud showing the four characters waving, it shows Wart destroying something, or jumping up or down.

I looked into the submission queue just now, and I saw that mrrichard999 just submitted infidelity's SMAS NES hack to this site.

If that can be on this site, I say inserting Mario Bros into your hack is worth it! Also bringing back Mega Man Origins would be worthwhile IMO.

Sounds promising. Please include a mode where you don't bump into each other in co-op, and please don't make the game pause when someone picks up a power up or dies. :)

Edit: Oh, you didn't mean simultaneous 2-player, my bad.

Do you consider the original game to be pretty much perfect in terms of mechanics and level design? I think you could improve on a lot of things.

Now that you mention it, there are indeed numerous well-documented bugs.

Tell me moar!

Otherwise, I always thought a 5th Mushroom-per-Level would be a nice added mechanic...

One neat idea you should do for your hack is for the levels that have caves. When you go in them instead of playing the normal underworld theme, it plays the prototype underworld theme.

For the levels that have dungeons. When you go in them, the normal underworld theme will be played.

Will this hack feature some of the fixes from the Mario 2 De-Engrish Rewrite hack?

How about a DDP mode?
Where the game stays true to Doki Doki Panic, where the challenge of the mode is complete the game with each character

As a person that plays games almost exclusively as two-player: Level or Death with joint progress is my preferred method. Otherwise the game becomes unenjoyable for players of differing skill levels.

This. Super Mario Bros 1 would always annoy my siblings that weren't as good as me so they would purposley try to get me to die so they could play. Super Mario Bros 3 at least got it right.
