You see, I was just recommending this patch to stop a bunch of people from downloading the J2E version, they were THIS close to doing it, I stumbled upon the typo while showing it to them, but I told them it's actively developed and updated to give them a good impression. I appreciate that. I do hope they still choose Namingway Edition over the J2E script. I've updated that typo, and submitted it for approval.

Personally I would like Namingway Edition's script ported to the Super Famicom ROM. The GBA's colors and the character portraits are terrible. I also have never been a fan of the fonts used in the GBA Final Fantasy ports. I'm aware there is a Baron Dancer and Sound restoration, but IV needs more work than that.

I would like to see someone talented enough to come up with some of the enhancements in later releases of the SNES Final Fantasy games such as a Bestiary and the Music Player like we have now with FFVI.

Anyway, Version 1.95b is available for download. It's just the fix to that one typo.

Why would the Japanese version benefit from this hack? Doesn't this convert to the Japanese difficulty anyway?

It does. The only real differences from Namingway Edition and the Japanese version now are the Config Menu, the hidden passages being highlighted, and the subtle difference in the title screen.

And the fact that casuals are more likely to look for FF4 (not FF2us) and end up getting the J2E version (and maybe play it on ZSNES...)

By the way, the guys I suggested this version to are now playing it!

I can safely say this is the best way to play ff4 on SNES right now, so they should feel happy.

Anyway, what has been irking me is this talk of the hidden pathways in ff4. I remember them being highlighted in ff2 us, very blatantly, but I didn't see any of that when bf was playing it. Are they highlighted in another way I don't know about?

And I’m interested in doing exactly that (with your permission of course), but also implementing a variable width font for the main NPC dialogue box. But that’s not something I’ll look into for a while, not until I’m done with my NES projects at least.

That looks okay and I've used it before. I actually have a modified SNES cover turning the II into a IV that I use. I made a few custom cover arts myself for fun.

If a VWF were to be implemented I think it goes without saying that Chicago should be used to make it consistent with other Square localizations when they started using VWF (otherwise it would look like FF4 PS1 - not a fan of how they used a font meant to be 8x8 as a VWF). The menus and battles would still use the old monospaced font of course, unless if a VWF could be implemented for those. But I think the menus and battles should still use a monospaced 8x8 font just to be consistent with FF5 and FF6.

A major sweep through the script for this was already done recently. Since that point, any errors that have been reported have been promptly corrected.

Perhaps this isn't the right place to be asking this, but is there any way to apply this patch to a Japanese ROM? I know it's supposed to be used in conjunction with the NTSC-U version, but I'm from Europe and have no interest in USA type cartridges. (For the record, I dislike emulators, but did play Namingway Edition at great lenght on my SNES classic mini.)

Reason I'm asking is because I do have the original Super Famicom cartridge of FF4 and I would like to translate that with a 'Super UFO Pro 8' on original hardware. I have modded my PAL 1-chip Super Nintendo with the SuperCIC mod just for this sole purpose...

Any help in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Just patch it to a US ROM then you can easily make a patch between the hacked ROM and the Japanese FF4.

Besides that "USA type cartridges" are literally the same thing under the plastic as Super Famicom. The PCBs are even internally labeled SHVC as the Japanese PCBs.
