Dragon Quest Monsters Battleroad Victory translation

Hi everyone, first timer here. Didn't want to actually come here with my project without having done work on it. So I began translating Dragon Quest Battleroad victory on the wii and let me tell you it's colossal work. Most of the menu and battle texts are actually pictures and so I had to make a picture for each word, phrase, spell and menu item that needed translating and I'm still far from done, but a good chunk of the menus is done.

(2020 Update)
Can't belive it's been 5 years since I started this project. Unfortunatly, it didn't amount to anything because I wasn't able to gather the help for translating and modifying files. In those 5 years, however, I did pick a few more skills and now thanks to some folks on the Facebook group Dragon Questers, this project can finally move along. So I did lose everything I did back then, but the good news is that I'm doing way faster now with those new skills. I'll try to update as much I can and when possible, but you know, life and all.

I have not been able to gather much help to translate this game. It's quite an undertaking. I am able to dump most of the story mode text into text files now however. Theres like 20 files with over 700 lines of dialog in each of them  :banghead:. I'm still not able to translate the monster compendium or the cards and even the battle texts.

Oh my god, this news made my day! I was planning to play this without knowing what's going on but now I'll surely wait for this! THANK YOU SO MUCH AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

This is what I call good news. I'm still waiting with my copy of the game and region hacked wii. Can't wait to play it! :thumbsup:

Congrats on the update. I know all too well what it's like when you can't move forward on a DQ project because no one seems interested in translating (looking at you Fortune Street Special!)

The game is also a major pain to translate. Most of the text, aside from the character dialogs, is made of pictures ... which are all over the place ..... you have like 10 iterations of the same image in 6 different files for example which are different parts of the game, but sometimes you cant rely on the filnames to guide you because well ... the devs messed up the logic of it lol

Made some progress. I had issues finding where the popup for YES/NO appeared, finally was able to translate that. Also had to learn HEX editing the Help files for the help screens.

For a long time I have been following who can solve the translation of this amazing game, just like you are a fan of the DQ saga and this title is that hidden gem that still cannot be found. but since I read your new update you have given a light at the end of this tunnel. the best thing is that this in recent months !! how are you doing Did you manage to resolve the lost files? Kind regards, I will be attentive in your progress. ;)

Also if you need help in terms of editing images or text in .png let me know, my knowledge is little programming but design could give you help if you need it. :thumbsup:

UPDATE : A lot of things happened in the last year. Again, the people who were helping me translate the game, just gave up. So I'm stuck again at the same point I was 6 years ago. However, I do have a python script that extracts the Japanese texts from the game and I can re-inject it into the game. I dunno when I will continue this. I might start a Discord server and people can just help me over there or something.

Do you load from folder on Dolphin? or We have to build image every time?
I've never seen the file formats. How do I edit them?

Thanks for everything you've done so far! If you are still working on this project, I am willing to contribute however I can. I know a fair bit about project management, and although I haven't done any ROM hacking yet I do have some coding experience.

Since you're now able to dump the game files into text files, I have a suggestion that potentially could speed up the translation and hacking processes for this project.

If the japanese text for each file is imported into a csv file (possibly multiple csv files for various sections or formats), then that csv file could be used to import data into a spreadsheet (ie Google Sheets). Once the japanese text is in a shareable spreadsheet, the translator(s) could access the spreadsheet at any time, and from any location, to add to the translation effort.

If certain formatting standards are met, then it may even be possible to use a script to import the translated text from the csv/spreadsheet directly into the game files. I have seen other translation projects utilize such organizational steps, and it seems to work well for them. At the very least, I believe this method could help with the hurdles of translating large sections like the Monster Compendium and the Card List.
