Pokemon Grape has been completed, you can find it here on this website. The current release is Final 1.6 (December 25th 2021).

The original post from 2014 is down below, with the addition of restored screenshots from the final version and improved diction where needed.
(Ignore the occasional Engrish in the older messages).

Hi, I'm 80C, I'd like to share with you this hack I'm working on since 2012.

It's Pokemon Grape, it's a hack of Pokemon Red (USA) and unlike most of Pokemon hacks this is a total overhaul of the original game.
It features over 240 Pokemon from all generation and features a lot of new features not present in the original Pokemon Red.

This hack features a lot of brand new implementations, such as Phisical\Special split from Gen3\4 games (it's actually the first Gen1 hack to have it implemented), custom Mini Owerworld 1 for each pokemon, EXP Bar (thanks to Danny-E 33 for the original asm code that I later fixed\improved), more fly-able ambients (like in Pokemon Gold), new types (now there are 25 types), new moves (for a total of 250 moves, among which there are new moves that use custom animations & effects as well), and a lot of new features.

I'm aware of the fact that a lot of people tend to compare my hack to Pokemon Brown: that awesome game has been the first Pokemon Red hack to have been completed, and it is perfectly comprehensible considering how there aren't many completed overhauls of Pokemon Red around (the other one that comes to my mind is Pokemon Team Rocket Edition, albeit during the years there were many other surprising projects that, alas, were never completed); nonetheless, this project does not have much to do with such game.
While it true that in the first stages of developement of this hack the game design was somehow similar, with the years and each newly published relase Pokemon Grape turned out to be a completely different game with its own aesthetics and original additions, resulting in a great improvement over its precedessors.

As a side note, this is the first Pokemon Red Hack to include Fairy-type, which had been included since the Demo2, which was published one month (early December 2013) before Pokemon Brown 2014 did; thus, there is some legitimity in the claim that its inclusion was not a mere copycatting but a reciprocal positive influence over each hack (as with any other product that is found in the Arts and in sciences: most achievements are oftentimes the result of a cross-fertilization of several distinguished contributors who end up influencing and motivating each other, either in a friendly way or in a fierceful competition as it has been sometimes the case in History).

Here are a few screenshots:

Side note:
this is the very last total overhaul hack of Pokemon that had been realized by using obsolete methods such as Binary Hacking. In more recent years, that obsolete method has been surpassed and replaced with the far more competent and efficient Disassembly (a product of reverse-engineering a game and re-assembling it by including the modifications made in its disassembled source). As I have often mentioned, I did not henjoy the privilege of using such a semi-automated method because, when it had finally become feasible, most of the hack's design and planimetry (if not the maps and events) had already been finished. Nonetheless, a few innovative features (detailed on the hack's page) managed to be included anyway, obsolete methods of development or not.

I'd like to use the few remaining space in this post to acknowledge the contribution of all the people that contributed to this project during the first two years of development, and to acknowledge the lessons I have learnt from the community on the web, whether good or ill-intentioned, for good and for worse anyway, that had motivated me to pursue and eventually complete this project.
Special thanks goes to the original developers of Nintendo and Smilesoft and the "pirates" involved with the spoof translation of the "Pokemon Diamond" bootleg from 2001 (each credited in game at the end) and the few people who believed and supported me during the years even tough they knew I was neither in the right conditions nor in the right stage of maturity to earn their respect.
A last greeting goes to all the players and users who kindly provided me and others observations on the things to fix and improve in this game and all the players who managed to cope with my mental insanity and the weird sense of humor this parodistic game has.
Thank you.

Welcome to the forums 80C  :thumbsup: And all i can say from the info and pics you're showing here is that it looks awesome and can't wait to play it :D i'm kinda' excited about this hack as if it was 199X again  ;D

I must say, I'm not really a Pokemon person, nor do I follow a lot of the Pokemon hacking stuff that comes up as it generally seems pretty me-too; mainly done with freely-available editors and little direct knowledge of the inner workings of the game on the part of the creator. That said, what you're showing here looks legitimately impressive, and while Pokemon really isn't my thing, I just wanted to throw out a "Good job!" and some encouragement.  :thumbsup:

Looks interesting, I prefer the pokemon games of 8bits  :beer:

Same for me, too. I never really got into Pokemon (though my youngest brother is an avid Trainer since the beginning to present day...), but I totally respect anyone who tries to wedge new features into an old game like this. Very nice! This deserves attention.

mantidactyle

Looks really nice, I hope you complete it soon :)

Lariria

Holy FUCK, this looks amazing!

As a former ROM hack collector, I loved all Pokemon hacks. Any Pokemon hack I found, I downloaded to try. Things have changed since then, and modding has changed so much since then. This looks really good, and I do believe I've seen your project posted at the Poke Community? Correct me if I'm mistaken.

While I do love Pokemon hacks, my time is dedicated to Zelda OoT.

I will be following this as I can't pass up on Pokemon hacks.

80C

Thank you :)

I just applied a new kind of modification that features a new functionality from the newest generations: evolution by leveling up only in a certain area.

Now Eevee and Magneton could evolve id they are leveled up only in a certain area, the area where they could evolve is suggested by certain NPCs in the game.
Eeevee could evolve into Leafeon or Glaceon while Magneton evolves into Magnezone.

Here's a link to a video that shows this new functionality:

http://youtu.be/qtUTRc7IPuo

I think that this is the ultimate proof that I have originality, this kind of modification infact wasn't done before in any other Pokemon Hack (not only in Gen1 hacks but also in Gen2 and Gen 3 hacks).
I added also even more evolution methods but I'll leave them as a surprise for Demo 3 when it will come out.

Sorry to dig this thread up but as far as I know this rom hack has been released 2 days ago. All of the gameplay is good so far and it can be consider one of the best Gen 1 hack so far. But the game have tons of evolution bug that need to be fix, my Kadabra evolve into Machoke at level 28, my Pupitar evolve into Donphan and other report from reddit too. I think this hack is not fully beta tested enough and I hope I can have a way to contact you to report all the bug that I found. Thank you.

Adding to this one, my Slowpoke also evolved to Voltorb at level 15.
Not complaining, though, as I still didn't had a Voltorb at the time.

This is a really great hack so far, but there is also another bug with an unreachable hidden item in the first city, when using Itemfinder.
That's what I found, so far.

Thanks everybody! I'm sorry if I revive thids thread after half a decade O_O.

At this point I would suggest to use it mainly for bug reporting and for people who had spotted bugs, glitches, oversights, etc.

About the Final Version: I would suggest you to upgrade to the last released versions as soon as you can, because Final v1.0 has that invalidating Evolution glitch as I stated on the ReadMe of Final Version v1.1. The first Final version (which I would call "accidentally final version") turned out to be a developement version not long realized before the Final Version (a couple days, for instance) that included a few last-minute changes of important size that at the time weren't fully tested -- the evolution glitch was triggered by a wrong coding of a sub-routine which fixes the "Stone-Bypassing evolution glitch" which was badly needed considering how many pokémon evolve thru items in this game. I am sorry for that, I was so tired by the end of the year that I forgot to replace the file I was going to upload with the right one. (facepalm)

For players who had this issue on Version v1.0 and who don't want to waste their savegame: to fix this first upgrade to the newer version(s) (remember that the whole patching operation has to be repeated from zero like the first time) then follow these steps:
1) After obtaining the newer version carry your older savefile to the save folder (all Final Versions are, as of now, fully compatible);
2) Continue your game, then gather all the glitchy evolved pokémon into your party;
3) At this point you'll have to use cheat codes to forcefully change the internal ID of your party Pokémon affected by the glitch;
4) Apply the code(s) to either the first pokémon in the party, or to all of them if you know the memory adresses regarding pokémon party stats. Remember that the first memory adress of each party pokémon is used to hold its Internal Value ID (you can find a list somewhere, for example on Bulbapedia). The internal Values of the first 151 pokémon are exactly the same as in Red/Blue. Others carry different values, tough, as soon as I can I'll post the IDs of the mostly troublesome specimenbaffected by that glitch;
5) Save the game while the codes are ON (with the save function ,important), then de-active the codes, shut down the game and re-open it (hard reset) and upon starting your team *should* be corrected.
6) This will be applied in such a way that the glitched evolution specie will be corrected to its regular one (eg: Graveler obtained from Weepinbell would be Victreebell, etc.);
7) Remember that upon levelling up the "fixed" pokémon *might* have some stats discrepancies altough it seems that levelling up a few more levels can somehow balance its stats accordingly to the correct specie, altough the first times many might experience a few issues regarding stats.
(This happened in the Demos with Slowking who had many underflow problems and stats glitching, this had to do with a wrongly digited EXP.Base parameter in its Base Stats which was LOWER than that of Slowpoke 0_0).

I don't have the codes right now but I'll eventually post them when I put my hands again on the list of WRAM adresses -- that's how I'm creating new cheats codes for Red/Blue (off topic, but I should have an "Easy Casino winning" group of codes for Red/Blue that are compatible with Grape grouped with that RAM areas list). So far most of Red/Blue WRAM adresses are matching, however there were very important relocations that make many codes useless or damaging as things like Pokédex Flags were moved elsewhere.

In any case, upgrade: Final v1.1 is way more stable than the first release as the Evolution glitch is no longer there.
Actually there should be a newer update (it should turn up soon), Final Version v1.2, that fixes a couple oversights that were left -- in particular, Flannery with a Lv.104 Ninetales, a particular spot in the Swamp that can potentially trigger the MissingNo Glitch and the sleeping Snorlax Sprites.

That's it, if you have any bug reports please post a detailed account of the circumstancies in which the glitch/bug/oversight was encountered and possibly a screenshot for an eventual visual clue if that's the case. Keep in mind that a few oversight left there in the original game, especially regarding battles, are still there ("counter" glitches etc.) along with some other newer oversights carried from the Demos (Dive text oversight when used by enemy pokémon, etc.). Those are going to be fixed when I finally completely recode\upgrade the Battling data and this will take a huge while.

I'm sorry for letting such awful oversights in the first release, by now I'm only doing this in weekends on a limited basis with very outfashioned methods.
Thanks for the support! :)

Edit: Even better, without flooding this thread, you can send me a Private Message here when you spot glitches/bugs/oversights.

i did get a chance to play the newest version of pokemon grape and it's pretty good, albeit a few post-quest bugs.

maybe things to add/improve in a future version of the game are the ability to surf at 2x speed when holding the B button, just like with this guy's pokemon hack, where holding the B button not only allows running on land but surfing faster and biking faster as well.

and also adding some short descriptions of the TMs while they are in the item bag, again like with the pokemon hack that I mentioned, which would take out the guess work on what kind of TMs that are carried in the item inventory menu.

edit 8/2 - found a game crashing bug when attempting to enter the hall of fame (HOF) for the 3rd time after beating the E4 and rival champion Paul for the 3rd time (aka. rematch or rebattle); happens when completing all quests (the 1st main quest, the item trading, hidden gem and crystal island quest).  during the HOF sequence, after the 6 pokemon from the party are entered or scrolled into the HOF when attempting to beat the game the 3rd time, and after the player is being scrolled onto the screen the game crashes and does not show the final "time", money and pokedex rating.

also a weird text error message like "31 ERROR" shows up after filling up the Pokedex with all 248 entries after have caught all 248 pokemon and contacting Prof. Bek from his PC (or by talking to him and showing the completed pokedex with all 248 entries at his lab.) - here are the pics of this:

it's supposed to say that the pokedex is fully complete but instead it shows that weird "error" text message

ok - version 1.6 came out several days ago that seems to have fixed the problems I encountered in the previous version

though this new version of Pokemon grape is much more than a bug fixed version
surf on water speed in the new version is still at 1x (gen 1) speed unlike with a few other gen 1 hacks like Pokemon Red/Blue Deluxe (DX), which has the surfing speed at near bike speed by default

Thanks all for your replies.  :)
The reason I answer to these posts after such a long delay since the last reply is to announce that I have finally updated the first page of this thread by restoring the screenshots (updated in line with the latest release) and by polishing the heinous linguistic by-products of my lack of competence with the English language; I have also updated the post a bit to make a few acknowledgements, which I felt were needed after that many years.

Version 1.6, as it has been correctly pointed out by the kind users here, is both an improvement and an amelioration of the previous Final releases -- freed of the glitches that plagued the previous version, including the tiresome issue afflicting the Snag Ball snagging Pokemon that lost their moves if these were sent automatically to the PC as a result of their capture in a trainer battle.
Among other things, this update finally includes the held items mechanics that were previously announced in-game but not featured.
As usual, since the amount of changes and addition featured in this game is really (really) massive, I invite you to check out the annexed documentation (the ReadMe).

Acknowledging the unavoidable dismay of many players, I have to announce that:
1) there are no plans to feature other parts of Kelgo outside the maps and dungeons that are currently featured, as I ran out of available maps;
2) there are no plans to feature double-speed surfing.
3) anything beyond this point, as much as the possibility of further announcements on my behalf, are to be shrouded yet again in the realm of mystery for an indefinite while (as usual), mainly because of non-videogaming (or, better, post-videogaming) experiences. Probably it has to do with the epistemologic teachings of the late avant-gardist game designer Gene Sepas, a personal mentor of mine whom I subscribed long ago. the usual off-kilter dadaistic joke to uplift the readers... ;)

Good gaming!  :D

I really like your game. I like the story. I also really love the new typing's for the Pokemon that was a good touch. I can't say enough positive about it and the only minor negative is not being able to have a gender selection at the beginning. I was wondering would it be okay if I create an IPS patch to make that an option?
Edit: I'll totally understand if you think your game's perfect as is and don't want anyone doing anything related to it. I'm just want to help and I'm new here

I've sent you a PM with details; I also reply here in case you've missed it: I approve of your patch, I think it's a great idea.  :)

Edit: Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad you've enjoyed this game.

sadly, this game is no longer available for download at the romhacking.net site as it was removed sometime in May 2022 :(

also found the latest version from here as well as older versions of grape

I first played this game when it was at 1.5 last year then updated to the 1.6 version around end of 2021
