Chrono Trigger: how to expand the font
« on: April 08, 2014, 05:40:40 am »
So, before trying to reinvent the wheel, I wish to know whether there are tools allowing expanding the font of Chrono Trigger (US SNES version) to add around 16 or so additional characters. The blank graphical space is indeed available and empty, but the programming only allows for ranges after A0 for letters (the former reserved for DTE).
Any way to replace some of those DTE slots (from before A0) with actual letters?
The text editor under the Utilities here mentions it supports accentuated letters, however the US rom doesn't have European accentuated letters to begin with so that escapes my comprehension.

As far as I know it's just a couple bytes of change to move the DTE number up. I'll try to look for it later in the day

So there weren't tools that did that after all?

Take a look at these, see if there's something that can help you: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/source/chronotools.html

Thanks :)
Are there any compiled builds for Windows? It includes only the sources

Is it hard to compile these? What exactly goes into doing that?
Hate to bump, but these tools look so promising. Automatic word wrap, ROM expansion, possible event editing? So cool!
I'd like to use the 2012 "120%, extra features" version, though, not the 2005 version...

Don't forget, Temporal Flux is the ALL around editor for Chrono Trigger (Minus sprite editing, but it can compress/recompress changes).  It does pretty much everything else you'd want to do for event editing and such

Temporal Flux seems to organize text editing around the maps, and I'd like something where you just have to hit Ctrl+F and search for a phrase. The text editor on here by Manaknight does that, but this does automatic wrap-around, which is pretty much the main thing I was looking for.
