Sonic Megamix
« on: August 18, 2006, 02:45:18 pm »
I've been working on this for a long while... I've finally come about with my first public release.

Some screens:

Bugfixes in this release:
- Double Jump fixed for Shadow; Jump Dash added for Sonic
- Issue of life icons not loading while starting a game from the options screen fixed -- you'll like the new system better. =P
- Zone layouts for Sunset Hill (GHZ) and Starry Night (SLZ) are complete. New layouts thanks to Robjoe1107.
- Music playlist modified (and that damn Splash Down port fixed =P)
- Various bugs fixed (Like the starting position in LZ3)

Features include:
- Seperate music for each act

- S2 level select and options menus edited to fit with my hack (Stealth)

- Perfect Spindash for each character (Stealth)

- 3 Characters: Sonic, Mighty and Shadow -- Each later to have thier own special move and physics stats. Thanks to Yuski for Mighty sprites and JohnnyUK for Shadow sprites.

- Sonic 2 running physics -- Run down a slope in SLZ and you'll go as fast as you do in CPZ. AKA slope related acceleration. (Stealth)

Among other things.

Moves, and controls to use them:

Homing Attack - B/C near an enemy/monitor after a jump
Light Dash - A near a set of rings (Sonic only)
Jump Dash - B/C in air when no enemies/monitors are around (Sonic Only)
Double Jump - B/C in air when no enemies/monitors are around (Shadow only)
Light Speed Attack - Hold A and do a homing attack near multiple enemies/monitors. 5 ring cost for each additional target after the first.
Spindash - ...you'd better know this one.

Anyway, enough chatter -- time to play! Download links are below:

Enjoy! Comments are appreciated. This is the last release I'm making in a while, so enjoy it. =P

Dude, even the earlier releases were pretty damn sweet. I'll have to check this out in a few minutes, once I get some naming stuff done with the project I'm working on.

Does this mean you will finally be able to add the Sonic 2 invinicibilty music into Sonic 3 and S3K Tweaker?

Your skills are impressive tho. Your hacks are better then the change pallette hacks most sonic hakcers make.

I completely forgot to comment on this, it's very impressive, multiple characters, ported music, saving, good level design... wow, I never thought I'd see half of this stuff in a Sonic 1 hack.

You know what would be really interesting? Since people have the ability to port any genesis tune to Sonic, I'd like to see Sonic with tunes from Rock n roll racing. That would own. You could have bad to the bone as the first levels music. Maybe give the level  a dark theme.

So, StephenUK decided to do some more work, and this is the result.

Pretty, isn't it?

And I apologize for the lack of updates... I don't really come here that much. :E

I think you did a great job, and I really like how you added the extra abilities.

How long did this hack take you?

noobish questions here but ... I'm having trouble patching the rom.

What program is used for patching gens roms? (I use Lunar IPS for snes roms, does it works for gens too?)

What rom version (or filename) to I patch it to?

Thanks

Can't wait to play this.

Nevermind, got it working (Sonic the Hedgehog (JUE) [!].bin, Lunar IPS did the trick)

All I can say is what everyone else has been saying ... wow. This is addictive as hell. Keep up the good work.

I have a few questions.
Is this a complete redesign? What I mean is is it just sticking Sonic and pals with new moves and such back into Sonic one or did you make entirely new levels? Eithers great for me and I will be trying out this hack.

Is Super Sonic in this? :D
Next you should throw in tails and maybe knuckles.

I got all the emeralds but was not able to become super sonic so I guess he's not included in this hack...... maybe with the next release hopefully......

Only GHZ and SLZ are actually re-mapped. But all the zones get new palettes, and new music per act!

You also get spindash, homing attack, and sonics ludicrous air dash. The "ring dash" thingy is cool too, but I usually get hit afterwards.

I'm glad you posted here, I haven't felt like retaking the test at S2beta. That zone's graphics are awesome beyond words, the layout is nice too, the zone is going to be great once you get the lag straightened out. The only minor criticism I have about it is the background looks strange when underwater, it seems odd being able to see the lake while you're standing in water,  maybe you could make the underwater areas "inside" like the original Labyrinth Zone?

Edit: Duh, no you can't, dynamic water level. Sorry about the pointless suggestion.

The lags from a large number of objects being on screen and the Genesis hardware not being bale to handle it. StephenUK said he knows how to fix the problem though.

You really are a god among men. I really think it's cool that you hack genesis roms, which I hope starts becoming more popular in the future.

Good luck and keep us up to date on your progress!

You know you have good level design when it really looks like something right out of an official Sonic game. Those levels look right at home with the game. Keep up the smart level design and you will have a winner on your hands.  :)
