Hey, just got done with the first little part of my playthrough so I'll post what I've found so far. I haven't been around or read through the rest of the thread, so I'm sorry if I repost stuff that's already been mentioned before.

I assume it doesn't fit, but "Rmove" can't be "Remove" on the equip menu?

MBlock% to MEvade% to match Evade%?

Pendant item description has "Magitek Armor", but armor is usually lowercase in dialog?

I figure the debate on whether to use abbreviations or not has already been had, but for MagitkMissile, there's a M-TekArmor enemy so I don't think "M-Tek Missile" would be a bad compromise and it would look nicer imo.

Mine Shaft is usually one word - Dialog by Biggs/Wedge before entering said mineshaft at start

Poisoned Wererats from Bio Blast repeatedly gain and lose 2 hp, like they are both poisoned and have regen on. Can't remember if it was like this in base game or not.

new-found can be one word as well - in Gestahl's flashback speech after Terra falls at the start

"Gauntlet allows you to hold a weapon with both hands for more damage.." - From the moogle in south figaro who gives the relic tutorial. Ellipses in this game are usually 3/6 dots, so is it just supposed to be a period?

TelportStone to Teleport Gem or TeleportRock maybe?

Slight inconsistency, not sure if you'd care or not - Antidote has "Cures poison.", Poisona has "Cures poisoning"

Dialog seems unnatural to be coming from a kid. Something like "The richest guy in town lives in a house to the north." seems better imo.

"nevers seems"

hometown can be 1 word

Not to try to take away any woolseyisms here, but I'm not sure if there'd be any gyms in the world of FF6...

That's all for now, I'll add more later.

Ugh. I don't understand why this is so complicated to understand and why there's such a HARD push for me to remove EVERY single Woolseyism as if they are a stain on the game or something. I believe removing them is like making Greedo shooting first.

I feel I need to point out that this game more localized than it is a literal translation. You have to understand that English, especially here in the US, is full of expressive idioms. My brother in law is from China, and my sister and I constantly have to explain to him some of the phrases we use in regular language. (Don't put all your eggs in one basket. To make a long story short. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Etc) In the same way, a lot of lines used in this game's localization have the same expressive flair, which is what Ted Woosley was KNOWN for.

This particular line has been in TWUE since I started this project and there is a reason for it. Since the literalists have descended upon RHDN who don't understand humor or idioms, want exact 1:1 translations with NO English expressions, and hate the idea of localization over translation, let's analyze this shall we?

You battle Vargas who is accompanied by bears! He's a martial artist who trains with bears, which is probably how he gains his strength. What other video game characters do this? Zangief in Street Fighter does, which is why he has so many scars. So does Heihachi Mishima in Tekken with Kuma. In fact, Kuma trains to fight as well.

So there's your image of a bear training to fight, as ridiculous as it is.

Now for the ACTUAL literal Japanese translation.
It's kind of like. "Younger brother? I th-thought he was a giant bear, actually..."

This of course is followed up by Sabin/Mash, saying
"A bear? That's great!"

At the end of the conversation, in in both the SNES and GBA, he says "Think a "bear" like me can help?" Mind you that the Japanese line is more like "Do you think my skills would be useful?"

So my line of thinking was to connect these two. The missing information about a bear is restored while keeping Woolsey's line about a bodybuilder straying from his gym intact. The connection with the later line that Sabin says makes a LOT more sense as well.

You could have Terra say: "You're his... brother? At first glance I thought he was a giant bear who had strayed from his cave..."

I could also remove "Son of a submariner." and replace it with "Argh. Dammit!"

I could replace "Call me a TREASURE HUNTER or I'll rip your lungs out!" and replace it with "Whoa now. Call me a treasure hunter."

I could also change "Kefka: Bleh! You people make me sick! You sound like chapters from a self-help booklet!" to the straight foward
"You guys and your back-talk... You all make me sick. Ugh!"

I could also RENAME this hack to the "Most Straight-Foward Literal Re-Tranlation Edition" too.

In fact, I may just do that. I'm pulling Woolsey Uncensored from RHDN. You guys don't want it anyway. I may come back with an ultra updated version that is super literal and all Woolseyisms removed, just for those who want it. But that's if I want to waste my time with that.

I was just trying to help with the Wooleyisms.

I'm sorry if I offended you. Please DON'T remove TWUE. I really like what this project is trying to accomplish. I just wasn't catching up with recent posts... >.< >.< >.<

Oopsie daisy, that went out of hand.

Guess I'll go back tooooooo um yeah. Not really another good translation of FF6 available. Time to start learning Japanese!

That's up to you.

I think it's important that players are able to give you feedback on these forums, especially if there are easy superficial errors within the script that can be fixed. There are other instances in the script where the dialogue just may not read that well, Woolseyism or otherwise, and I think they should definitely be brought to attention whether you choose to address them or not. Either way, having a second (or hundredth) opinion on it can't hurt, especially since it is your project. You've been so close to it that these other looks at it might seem jarring.

There's definitely been some worthwhile discussion, and I hope you'll still consider some of it and leave the rest as you see fit. In the meantime, if you're done with the project, I guess there's no need for me to finish my playtest  :-\

Don't let these comments get under your skin, your mod's almost at 30000 downloads so there has to be quite a lot of people that do want it. If it's a line that was changed then I think you should be open to feedback and other's opinions, but with that being said you've already given your viewpoint on the bear/bodybuilder thing and if you've decided that the line is final then you can just ignore any further feedback on it and leave it as is. I think the line is fine given what you were going for.

I'm sure pretty much everyone that posts in this thread thinks you've done a great job on the mod even if they don't actually say it, so don't get upset about people popping in and dropping their 2 cents on whatever is being discussed (including me :o). They don't mean any harm by it and there's nothing wrong with you ignoring them if you don't care for what they have to say, or if you've explained yourself already.

As for people complaining about pointless crap like how often you're updating your mod, you should definitely just ignore them and do your thing. There's always going to be someone like that around that loves to complain about every little thing since they have nothing better to do with their time.

I see the mod is still up for now (and I hope it can stay that way), so I'll go ahead and post what else I've found on my playthrough.

heaven should be lowercase here I believe

checkpoint can be 1 word

Clockmaker can be 1 word

This line is fine I think, but Kefka's soldiers during the assault on Figaro Castle at the start of the game would say "Sir" capitalized. After thinking about it I'm pretty sure it should be lowercase, but either way it should be made consistent.

jump-rope is usually just 2 words without the hyphen whenever I've seen it

Another capitalized Sir

judgment is the usual spelling

Having this guard say cometh is kind of strange imo since Cyan is usually the only one to do the ye olde english thing.

stitched

seems like it should be til instead of till, since it's short for until

description says "gloves" plural, but name of item is a singular glove

knuckles

hyphen can be removed for "still life" I think

lots

This is one of the most highly respected and played FF6 mods there is, I hope you will reconsider. Just let it be known that you are not accepting feedback, if that's what it is... For the record I am a fan of Woolsey's translation, having grown up with it, and I like the line: "bodybuilder who had strayed from his gym", it just was a bit awkward having "bodybuilding bear" in there instead imo, though, it does make sense because Sabin calls himself a 'bear' shortly after when he's joining. I'm aware Slattery corrected this by having Terra say "one of Vargas' bears", but this is Woolsey after all. It's no big deal really, it's your hack you can have him say what you want, but I think we were just suggesting to keep it original (Woolsey) there basically if anything, but again, your hack.

These people here actually DO greatly enjoy this mod and seem to want to help, not anger you. I think you may have overreacted just a tad good sir!

I don't know if some posts that you're reacting to have been deleted or what, because I'm not seeing anything that would warrant such a strong response from you. Or maybe you're just having a really bad day. It happens.

Perhaps it would do you well to re-read all the glowing reviews this mod has received. It definitely has its audience and to pull it because of some suggestions that you disagree with would be a disservice to those fans and to yourself.

Spooniest

In the words of a very wise old sage of the Ancient World:

"[Excrement] happens."

You never can tell when a project will end at RHDN. It's one of those things that we can't control but must accept. Oftentimes people will not have the time or resources to continue, many projects never get out of the preliminary research phase, and some (like TWUE) eventually become untenable for one reason or another.

Been quietly lurking in this thread, and here's a big shot of me being real, I personally don't agree with the direction any of you (including Mr. Rodimus) want to pursue...but then, I made this point on RHDN back when I first started working on my own FF6 mod, which was quickly swallowed into oblivion upon release. I really put a lot of passion and work into that project (I am *NOT* a coder and I don't know anything but the most basic Japanese phrases, and wouldn't know a hiragana from a katakana to save my life), but in the end, it just wasn't what people wanted.

Sometimes in life you just have to swallow your bad feelings and move on. Disappointments are far more frequent than satisfactions.

Here's hoping Rodimus comes back with a renewed desire to work on a mod that you all clearly love. Being partial to my own work, I'm actually not in a position to state an opinion on it (due to the innate bias of such), but I bow to popular opinion.

Rod, these guys like your mod. It dwarfs Stand Guard's download count by 100x. It's your decision, but I think you've got a mandate.

And if he does come back, guys, stop arguing with him for goodness' sake. Manners!

That means a lot Spooniest. Like you with Stand Guard, I put a LOT of time, energy, and passion into this project. From its beginnings and even now. It wasn't just one of the suggestions that angered me, I think it was the mountain of them that built up. It also wasn't from just this thread. I've been reading around on these forums and elsewhere like an idiot letting it get under my skin.

But like Adam Dravian said, I've been certainly having a bad day (personal stuff outside of this) and I ended up taking out on this project and those here. For that I apologize to all of you for over-reacting.

I DO want to finish this project. Make it the best it could be and I've always appreciated the feedback, even if I disagree with it. It is supposed to be a what if Woolsey had more than 30 days to translate the game, didn't have to be censored by Nintendo's policies, didn't have the memory limitations in the script, and is a love letter to the game many of us grew up playing back when it was still called Final Fantasy 3 on the Super Nintendo. I want the translation to be accurate while maintaining that Woolsey charm.

I didn't realize I may have caused many of the errors with my subsequent fixes to the script as updates have come out. An extra period here, a comma that I didn't realize I added there. A dyslexic typo when I de-capped the names (ex. Gesthal - Gestahl) And of course, the Woolsey mistranslations that still needed to be corrected. Like Dzumeister said, going through it multiple times is not a bad thing to help fix any errors that might be found. I thank everyone on this board for helping making this project what it is.

That said, I gratefully will take all of your advice and not pull this project. I think its time we get the next update ready though. There are errors I've corrected since I last gave an update to play testers. I also used svenge's notes on hairy hen's script since his is based on TWUE, which made it useful.

Man, I feel like Setzer right now at the bar in the World of Ruin and you guys have been Celes with the pep talk.

Again I'm really sorry about what happened. My biggest folly was giving suggestions to a game I've never even played (yet).

Sometimes I feel like Wash from Red v.s. Blue when he was with the Freelancers. Once in a while, when he opens his big fat mouth, he tends to makes things worse, and I can feel like that sometimes.

I do hope for the project to be finished, with or without anyone's input, including mine. Because IMO, this is the definitive version of FFVI, because it utilizes Ted Woosley's script and the names and terminologies of current english canon. And this is coming from someone who wants to play an updated version of the SNES version of said game.

That was a mistake I made erasing his last line after he insults Kefka. I had fixed this recently. It now reads like this:

QuoteLeo:
Kefka!
You utter bastard...
I oughtta...

Followed by Kefka's line about a threat. Now that it's added back in it makes more sense.

Actually, those changes do sound better :p Honestly, "son of a submariner" just sounds ridiculous. There's a big difference between literal and straight-forward. Straight-forward isn't bad. It gives the dialogue a more mature, serious feel as opposed to some weird b-movie.

Rodimus, I would just keep doing what you're doing. There will always be people who disagree and as I've learned just by working on a FF1 retranslation, you can never please everyone. Sometimes you gotta put your foot down and don't let other people steer you away from your goals. When I get around to playing FF6 in English, this version better still be around, because quite frankly no other English version interests me lol.

What I have been wondering, is what the updates since 2.00 have brought to the table. The hack has gotten its positive reviews before all of these recent updates. These recent updates haven't been out long enough to get the same magnitude of praise, and since I've mostly seen these changes in the form of typos and errors, my view has been unfairly coloured to these updates feeling unnecessary. I do think this feeling isn't justified.

Point being, I do understand that a creator who only hears the negative bits (even though they've mostly been fair and helpful comments to improve the hack), will kinda fall into a negative spiral. I've not seen anything positive about the changes since 2.00 on this thread.

My suggestion is, for anyone playing through, give some appreciation for the changes made. Maybe that will cheer Rodimus up.
