On particular types of spoof hacks
« on: June 28, 2013, 03:19:54 pm »
Are we still making these kinds of spoof hacks? The kind that forego intelligent, subtle, witty humor in favor of "hey guys, poorly-drawn dicks and racism are funny right?" The kind that even a 10-year-old wouldn't laugh at? The kind that add absolutely no value to the game whatsoever?

Even these have value. They're reflective of the internet and social environment that gave rise to the hacks.

There are far worse tropes in fan projects than spoof hacks. Personally, I can't stand the disembodied "witty" narration that Portal popularized, that's become prevalent in a number of fan and industry projects over the years.

I thought we had http://www.badhacks.net/ for this sort of thing, so we didn't have to keep them kicking around here.

...Except apparently that site went kaput in 2009.
This signature is an illusion and is a trap devised by Satan. Go ahead dauntlessly! Make rapid progres!

As for the matter at hand I still see a few, some are even pretty great as far as technical stuff goes and that would probably be where I start throwing questions -- the state of the art is also quite important and in many ways they actually do quite well there.

Anyway now I have started thinking about it again I will probably have to fire up link gets laid.

I like witty humor, crass stuff, and toilet humor but I would never submit that kind of stuff. For the amount of time and thought it takes to make some of these hacks it could be better applied to something way better. Is there really a demand for those kind of hacks?
