It might be better to get rid of the Japanese quotation brackets (the [ and ] type thingies, actually 「 and 」) and either replace them with English quotation marks or nothing (if nothing, probably have a colon after names in speech).

I second the removal of the Asian quote brackets.

Hear hear.

USC

Haha, are they really that bothersome? The original Survival Kids actually used them as well, although even worse in my opinion (Basically two triangles connected together).
It'd be a simple change, but ultimately it's hattontown's translation and his call.

ChronoMoogle

Personally I think they  are somehow part of the Survival Kids-style. Probably because the original translation for the prequel also featured them.

Sometimes the player's name shows up before the actual sentence, so you've gotta put something there.

Take this screenshot from the original game for example:

So not only do they have a practical purpose, there's also a precedence.  Plus,  hattontown's quote brackets are an improvement visually over those used in the first game.

I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm pretty sure he could find better things to do with his time than fix something that isn't broke.

hattontown

Honestly everyone, I really do have better things to do with my time. My priority now is translating the game. After that, I will sit down with the English version of the game and play the crap out of it to make sure I like it. If at that point I decide I don't like anything, I will discuss changes with USC.

All of that being said, if the quotes really bother you that much, you could always wait for my patch, and then patch the patch!

In other news...

Ghosts. Kinda out of left field, to be honest.

This is your translation man, do with it however you want to. I enjoy your work, I'm looking forward to the finished product, or the semi-finished product.

I'm not sure why people would dislike the brackets, I actually find them quite charming.

People really like standard punctuation. Thing is, standard punctuation is a fairly new thing, with the exact minutiæ of today's near-universal usage dating back only about a century :)

That everyone (myself included now, I guess) is commenting on such a trivial issue is really a form of bikeshedding, I think.
we are in a horrible and deadly danger

I'm pretty excited about this project. I really love the first Survival Kids, and Survival Kids 2 translation project makes my GBC dreams come true. Now if only someone could translate Star Ocean Blue Sphere!

Yeah, Star Ocean Blue Sphere and Survival Kids 2 are probably overall the most sought after GBC translations... Lets hope somebody will tackle Star Ocean in the next few years, too^^

hattontown

Oh you guys want a Star Ocean Blue Sphere translation too?

I know that Blue Sphere is being worked on by Aeon Genesis and a separate patch is being worked on by a guy named lokai20. Both projects have not been update since February of last year.

hattontown

Hmm... Well I have my hands full with the current project anyway. And quite honestly, I think Star Ocean text might be more complicated and above my translation ability.

Sonira

Really rooting for you!! :D Thanks again for all your hard work. How's your progress going? :3

USC

Hey there! Glad to hear you're excited about the game!
From what I understand, we're nearly done with the 1st main scenario/ending. It looks like there are roughly 5 endings, but a lot of dialogue is shared between paths so it should take less time translating the others (hopefully!).

hattontown

Hey everyone- as always, fear not, the project is not dead and never will be. Summer is extrememly busy for me so progress has been slow. USC is right- I'm almost done with one ending, and lots of text is shared between endings, so I'm hoping we are approaching the 50% mark. Additionally, I bought a guidebook (in Japanese, of course) so progress should continue more quickly now that I don't have to progress through experimentation. I'm also planning on releasing a GameFAQ along with the patch so that everyone can benefit from the information.

FEAR NOT! Progress continues, slow but steady, and thanks for your patience!

warren

thanks for your hard work hattontown, i can't wait to play it

hattontown

Thanks warren, and everyone else for your support. I'm happy to say that I just got ending #1 (of 5), translated it and sent it to USC for patching. At this point I believe it's safe to say that the translation is 50% complete. As always, don't expect frequent updates. Just be patient and assume that no news is good news.
