New to PS3; looking for some games to try

Is it bad that I'm starting to buy $5 budget games just for the easy Platinums?

Speaking of which, does anyone know how the trophy / level system works? What sort of experience value does each trophy have, and what is the required value to reach level X? I was trying to research this earlier but didn't yield any results.

Nothing really special imho it just something that the company made up after the Xbox 360's introduction to achievements system and maybe after it's popularity later fw update introduced the trophies catagory system too and instead of Gamerscore count they use a level status type e.g "your nick" *(Star) #lvl '9' thats how it works.

Okay first a bronze trophy would be a tiny bit of percentage like maybe 5 or 7-8% i think, second a silver trophy would i say maybe around 16-26+% higher (Correct me if im wrong) then Finally Gold trophy would estimate to around maybe 50-56+% i believe and lastly Platium is exactly 100% there after achieving the other trophies mentioned.

You can get some really cool stuff for $5. When I first got my 360 I investigated a lot of the older titles that had dropped drastically in price, and I ended up with at least a few games that I got an awful lot out of, though not necessarily on the achievement/trophy front. Good old cheap games you may or may not enjoy are Condemned (if it's available on PS3), The Darkness, and darkSector. There's probably lots more nowadays too! Cheaper doesn't necessarily mean that the games are worse

Some of the bargain bin titles I've seen so far are okay, but I haven't come across any hidden gems yet. Would be nice if there were more RPGs in general, bargain or otherwise.

I've been getting into Oblivion lately, and I'm considering picking up Skyrim at some point. I'm waiting to see if there might be a GotY edition in the works. I think I read that one of the expansions wouldn't be ported to PS3, though. I could be mistaken.

Skyrim, while not the best thing ever as the hype machine makes it out to be, is much much better than Oblivion. Compared to Morrowind, Oblivion was a huge disappointment, at least for me. So if you enjoy Oblivion so far, you can't go wrong with picking up Skyrim. I'd say damn the DLC to hell and ignore it all. In my playthroughs, I'm usually fully equipped, skilled and hellishly overpowered after a third of the ingame content, why add more random sidequests when I can just finish the game and move on instead? But that's probably just me.

No complaints about Oblivion so far, but it seems substantially easier than Morrowind. In Morrowind, you have to swing at something 10 - 20 times before you'll land a successful hit, whereas in Oblivion, attacks always seem to be successful. I guess that's an improvement in some ways, but enemies just feel too easy at times. Maybe I need to try playing on a higher difficulty setting.

It's also starting to look like a short game. I was looking over the main quests and I'm already 1/3 through the story, even though I practically just started. Being able to open my map and teleport from one point to another really cuts down on gameplay hours too. Hopefully, there are plenty of sidequests to keep me occupied.

If you like Skyrim, you may like Fallout 3 and New Vegas. They're by the same developer and they share some similarities.

I need to give Morrowind another chance sometime, I only played it for about 2 hours.

I found Oblivion to be utterly boring though.  I put about 7 hours into it.  The world was unimaginative thus boring to explore and the auto leveling made combat feel pointless.  Yeah I know "mods",  but I shouldn't have to mod a game to make it fun.

The only game by Bethesda I've ever bothered to beat was Fallout 3.

Funny. I just now re-installed Morrowind myself. It's pretty fun, but traveling is a tedium compared to Oblivion. You can use various means of transportation, but you'll often rely on getting to places by foot. It's especially annoying if you're playing an Argonian. Since they can't wear shoes, that means no Boots of Blinding Speed.

Be sure to install the GotY edition and grab all the official plug-ins for free. If you need any guidance, UESP is possibly the best Elder Scrolls resource. You can find any info you need there.

Both Oblivion and Skyrim have fairly short main quests. But you don't play them for the main quests, you play them to explore. And there's an excessively large amount of side content - both questlines and one-offs - to get involved with.

About PS3 hardware...

When I insert some discs, (more specifically, Fallout 3) the optical drive becomes really loud. In fact, I would almost describe it as a grinding noise. I've heard similar noises produced by my computer's DVD-RW drive when I access some discs. I assume it's because the drive is accessing data at very fast speeds.

Is this normal behavior?

Yeah, seeking is pretty loud at times on the PS3.  Not like the Dreamcast, but it's still rather noisy.
