Let us proclaim our 2013 gaming resolutions.

So guys and gals, it's a new year again.  That means plenty of people will be making new year's resolutions they likely won't keep ( lose weight / spend less money / stop smoking / stop masturbating to your sister in law / etc. ).  So I thought it might be fun for us to make a few gaming resolutions, and then see whether or not we kept them come 2014.  So feel free to publicly make a resolution if you so dare.

Here are my own personal 2013 gaming resolutions:

I will NOT force myself to beat any game that does not remain consistently fun and entertaining.
I have a habit of making myself complete most games I start playing, often way past the part where the game stops being fun (if it ever was).  I'm not sure why I do this, some sort of overly dedicated mindset I guess.  However, that ends this year.  If I'm playing a game that I have to force myself to keep playing... something's obviously wrong and I'm wasting my time.  I might finish fewer games now, but the ones I do finish will at least be worth the effort.

I will NOT buy any new game until I've read a terrible review, a mediocre review, and a highly praising review for said game.
I've bought way too many games lately, and I'm having a hard time storing them, let alone justifying the financial expenditure.  I think by using Sarge's method I'll have a better understanding of all the angles of any particular potential purchase.

I will NOT fall into massive frivolous arguments on RHDN anymore.
I don't know what happened in 2012, but last year seemed to bring out the worst in all of us.  I saw more pointless arguing on this board than ever before (IME), and 90% of it was utterly useless ego tripping shit.  I will straight up claim to be the single most blatant purveyor of that behavior last year.  Well, I'm done with that.  I'm just going to say what I honestly think and if anyone disagrees I just won't care.  Even if there's factual evidence to prove I'm right, I'm not gonna bother sourcing it.  All that damned arguing never changes anyone's mind anyway.  Water-slides everywhere!  Let's all try to make this a more welcoming upbeat place to hang.

So those are my resolutions.  Anyone else care to challenge themselves, and chime in with their own personal proclamation(s)?

I will not buy too many games this year. Unfortunately, I'm basically wagging my tail at the new Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. I was anticipating the new Castlevania for 3DS, but I can pass on that for a bit, since I haven't beaten the first one yet.

I will not play as much as I do, which is already not too much anyway. But what I really mean, not play much at home (and it that regard, to stop being lazy and actually do some work on my personal projects as well as Shall We Game).

Beat Faselei! at some point in time, even if I have to do it on my phone (which is explicitly not for gaming, in my head, but oh well).

That joke has been so overdone already on Facebook already... Gah... Ruination of the internet. But alas, I have some friends that I have on there that I have on no other service. Friends I'd like to keep in contact just in case I need them in the future.

... Y'know, for uh... social gathering. Yes. Totally friendly and non-business related. Yes.

I'm sort of resolving to set aside my nitpicks with gaming and grammar. I tend not to bother with any game whose script is riddled with usage that would get my OCD senses tingling. If I have to, I'll just keep the game muted and skim over the text without paying attention. Dark Souls is what prompted an interest in this, because I keep hearing so much about the game's unique challenges and fun multiplayer, and I don't want to miss out. At the same time, I already know what an absolute crapshoot the game's script is. I've tried to sit down and play through bits and pieces of it, but I end up becoming frustrated (with the grammar, not the difficulty level) and walking away from it. If I force myself to keep on, I'll get shaky or border on having a panic attack. I think it really is an OCD / anxiety thing. I can't fix the script's grammatical issues since it's hard-coded into the game and beyond my control, so it remains there... taunting me... until I want to pluck my eyeballs out.

Then again, no one else seems the least bit concerned about it. I don't understand why. Maybe I'm just losing it.

I'm resolving to finally complete the few classic FF games I've yet to touch, namely 2,3 and 5. Right after Dimensions anyway

Square711

I'll spend less time making games and more time playing them. And that's about it.

Mew seeker

I will finish Super Robot Wars MX.
I burned myself translating back then but I want to finish it. X D
Starting  Kingdom Hearts Final Mix too wouldn't hurt. ^^;

SargeSmash

I'm going to do the exact opposite of Dank, and try to finish more stuff without just dropping it.  I've started buying less, simply because I have so much stuff already.  I will drop stuff if it's crap, but I'm going to actually attempt to beat stuff that has some modicum of quality.

Just like any resolutions, though, I suspect it will fall by the wayside.  Old habits are hard to break.  :P

The only resolution I can think of is that I should play more of the games I already have instead of buying and playing new ones instead! And maybe that I should play other genres more, not only JRPGs.

I think my most basic idea is to try to discern when I'm playing a game to kill time, or playing a game because I honestly can't-imagine-not-playing-the-game-oh-my-god-what-happens-next-is-that-a-sandworm-with-a-kitten's-face-exploding-from-the-cloaca-of-satan?

And then try to play less of the first, and more of the second. I generally think I play a lot of rather bad games, simply because they're there, and they're easy to digest. Then I never have any time for anything, and always feel overwhelmed.

 You liking it so far? It seemed like I was the only nut playing Dimensions. (Also, you won't be missing much by skipping 2... It's boring and its plot is very one-dimensional. Final Fantasy had better plot twists than II).

I will work on reducing my huge Steam backlog. I have spent too much time on online gaming the last year. It was never planned that way but kinda just happened.

IF I'm online gaming, I want to try and not get pissed off so much anymore at shitty teammates or difficult opponents. Took a friend of mine going off the handle too many times for me to realize how shitty I was doing myself. Negativity only breeds more negativity.

This pretty much sums up how I think 2012 went here.

Let's think positive and say nice things to each other.  I want to believe.

I think I might finally get around to finally playing Torment this year.  We'll see.  It's installed and ready to go and everything.

But first, I have that imported copy of Last Window that a friend went through some trouble to get to me.

That's my resolution as well; I don't play a ton of games online, and if I do it's multiplayer with my brother or friends. What I do play online I'm passionate about, and I get worked up into a frenzy. I don't talk smack to opposing players, but I seriously need to stop berating my teammates, and getting so frustrated. I'm generally understanding, and try to be helpful to people new to a game, or type of game, it's the experienced ones that can't follow my masterful battle strategies that piss me off  :P

Well I hope you enjoy it.  I'm a little conflicted about that game personally.  It's got an amazing plot and fantastic writing... but at the same time, it's much more of a book than an RPG.  That aspect coupled with the fact that 90% of the game takes place in the city of Sigil is what bothered me.  I was thinking you'd be constantly jumping to other planes in the game, but that hardly happens at all.  Or at least, it didn't during the 20 hours I spent on the game.  Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying Planescape is bad by any means.  I actually would like to give it another chance someday.

If you enjoyed Hotel Dusk you should enjoy it too.  I love both of those games tremendously.  I still listen to the OSTs all the time.

Actually the review I wrote for it 3 years ago is still up on Racketboy:

Anyway, you've got some good times ahead of you!
