It's not a REAL Mega Man game if Capcom isn't making it.

Yeah, I got excited until...

It's not a REAL Mega Man game if Capcom isn't making it.

...I realized that.

It isn't even looking to celebrate all its different incarnations (or at least X and Legends, which seem to be the most popular), just old Megaman. Which is cool but still...

It's not a REAL Mega Man game if Capcom isn't making it.

By this logic, the new XCOM isn't a "real" XCOM game, despite the creator of the original X-COM: Enemy Unknown enjoying it, and similarly it invalidates the Tierra King's Quest remakes. On the other hand, it means that Megaman Xover a "real" Megaman game, and it looks absolutely abysmal and embraces the things Egoraptor so eloquently states YOU SHOULD NOT DO (see: Roll popping up with tutorials.)

(Side note: say what you will about Egoraptor, he makes a lot of good points about game design in that video.)

Well by your logic then Gid, every shitty romhack of Super Mario World is a REAL new Mario game.   :P

For the record, I was taking "real" to mean "sanctioned and produced by the actual IP holder".  An easy assumption to make based on the inaccurate thread title.

For the record, I was taking "real" to mean "sanctioned and produced by the actual IP holder".

That's what I thought to. I thought it was a Capcom-made Megaman game. That would have been nicer and would have at least shown that they still have an inch of caring for the Blue Bomber. :/ I mean, I'm not discrediting the people working on this fan-made game, it's just... Yeah, of course the fans love Megaman. But does Capcom love Megaman? Considering their answer is a cancelled Megaman Legends 3, a cancelled Megaman Universe, and a social game runner that looks like it's done in Flash and passing that off as the "25th Anniversary game every Megaman  fan should play" is revolting, disgusting, and just... saddening.

...It's like they don't like money or something.

And the unfortunate thing? This X-OVER game is going to be a catch-22. Under the assumption that it's a paid game:

Scenario- It sells well, but has low ratings:
The reason it has low ratings is because the fans want to let Capcom know how disgusting this is. But in order to rate, you have to buy the game. So Capcom is drowning in money and could ignore the ratings. They release more Megaman runners.

Scenario- The fans boycott it:
Fans decide to boycott the game on the premise that it sucks and that Capcom should treat their mascot much kinder. This can mean two things: No sales- no one is buying the game, and Capcom decides that Megaman is unprofitable and let's the IP die indefinitely (not a completely horrible idea, mind- someone else could pick it up); or Sales are good, but the demographic is different- which means Capcom is making money, they feel like their game does bring in some money, but have lost sight of who the target audience was meant to be and they fracture the fanbase by putting out more XOVER games and ignoring the core releases.

So no matter what happens at this point, the Megaman fans will lose (unless they're XOVER fans).

Yeah, and you could add it's not a REAL Mega Man game if Inafune isn't invoved in it!

At least we could be looking forward for a few diligent people making Megaman-esque fan-games. If only it's free to play like Rokko-chan.

Yes, but the owner of the IP isn't Inafune. I feel dirty actually writing that though, because it's like the creator doesn't even matter. It's like if H.G. Wells had written "War of the Worlds" but the book is owned by Del Rey and therefore, it's "Del Rey's War of the Worlds" and in some little space "written by H.G. Wells".

The comic book industry has been suffering that kinda thing since the early days of Superman or earlier. :/ It's sad when you can't even claim ownership over your characters and stories.

Wow Tron Bonne. She's cute. I wonder how they can do justice to her cuteness in 8-bit form. I wish this was a ROM hack so I could put this on my PSP tho. I bet it's a fan game tho.

I'd rather have the series be completely dead than see it treated with such disregard as Capcom's giving it.

Yeah, which is why I said that it might actually not be a bad idea to see it die and then get revived by another company  who might do justice to it (it might even be Inafune himself!)

Edit: I just noticed I typo'd `lets`. Oh well.

Well, MM8 wasn't really NES-styled, but there was nothing wrong with MM9 and MM10.  It's more the debacle of Capcom canceling many of their Mega Man projects, including Mega Man Legends 3, and pretty much doing absolutely nothing with the property.  It's as if the series doesn't even exist upon the departure of Inafune.  And it sucks.  I'd happily take more NES-style Mega Man games.

While this isn't an official entry, it looks better than some things I've seen out there.  Time will tell whether it stacks up or not.  My advice to Capcom, though, would be to get with the program.  Don't rest on your Resident Evil laurels, which in doing seems to be destroying that series, anyway.

Honestly, if Capcom's just going to sit on the property, maybe they'll sell the IP to someone else.  Perhaps Inafune himself.  Maybe they're sitting on it just to try to get someone to buy them out, because it's certainly a strong IP.  (Then again, I don't know, this is pure idle speculation likely fueled by copious amounts of BS.)

Nothing wrong except they didn't get DS releases.  I was SO hoping there'd be a DS cartridge base version that would include both games.  Damn it Capcom.  I mean they rereleased the entire Zero series but not those!?

Honestly, if Capcom's just going to sit on the property, maybe they'll sell the IP to someone else.

They won't sell it and they don't care.  They ran poor Mega Man into the ground and his blue dust has scattered in the wind.  I think the suits consider Mega Man a relic of a bygone era and they couldn't care less about his future.  Also some bad blood with Inafune doesn't help.

They won't keep the IP forever if they don't think it'll make them money...

Okay, give me some examples of self-created IPs that Capcom has sold off?

Meanwhile, here's a few self-created IPs Capcom let die:

Gargoyle's Quest
Bionic Commando
Strider
Ghouls'n'Ghosts
Final Fight
194X
Darkstalkers & Powerstone & many other fighting game series.
Viewtiful Joe
Breath Of Fire
Dino Crisis
Clock Tower
Onimusha

And the list goes on and on... those are Capcom game series that have not seen sequels in ages.  Yet... Capcom hasn't sold any of those IPs.

Mega Man is doomed, bet on it.

*I cry to drown out the thoughts of doom, apocalypse, and genocide.*

Alright, I desist. Mega Man is doomed.

(So I don't get misunderstood: Yes, I see your point. And I have no choice but to agree. And take back what I said.)
