NHL 94 rom hacking assistance

I've been editing NHL 94 with a hex editor, tile editor and an editor someone made...
Overall, I'm pretty awful at it.
For anyone that's a fan of the game, and is skilled in rom editing, please post.
I wanted to make it so I could make a single series best of 7 where two sets of human controlled teams could be played, and the stanley cup would be provided at the end, as you can in the current NHL 2012.
Also wanted to edit some logos, but everythings pretty scrambled on the tile editor... And change a few other minor details.
Currently have 16 of the 28 (I couldn't do 30 teams) edited, 20 or so jerseys edited, added some water bottles to the nets, changed Ron Barr's text...
Hopefully someone's a fan of the game!

This could be a bit tough, but it seems doable (false optimism). First I have to ask. because I'm not even quite sure which game you're talking about. If it's the EA NHL 94, then I assume it already has 2 player VS mode? Can this mode be played as a 7 game series? If it can things will probably be much easier. It's going to take some actual hacking work, and you're going to have to trace the event of the cup being presented, and find out what makes that happen.

Yeah, EA NHL 94 for the SNES.
It has 5 player mode.
You can do a mode called best of 7 playoffs, however human controlled teams are limited to one team selection (Co-OP only)
A stanley cup is presented at the end of the best of 7 playoffs.
How do I trace these things? :O

I wanted to do that (One series best of 7 with 4 player capability for head to head teams)
extend overtime period lengths to 10 minutes sudden death
increase probabilty of highlights beind shown for computer controlled teams during intermission of playoffs
change logos to reflect current team logos
extend team limit from 28 to 30
incorporate fighting from NHL 93 to NHL 94 (Doubt this is possible)

Any help would be appreciated :)

Ok, the logos will be the easiest of these things to do (hopefully). To do this you're going to have to get a tile editor from the utilities section, I'm particular to Tile Layer Pro, but find one you're comfortable with.  Read the guides, and readme, open your file up in it and look for the logos to change them.

For tracing you're best bet is the SNESX9 build with the tracer. This will display the information as it would be read in a hex editor as the events are happening. This allows you to see exactly what's going on, and when it's going on. Your goals are lofty, most of them seem possible (the fighting thing is probably out of the realm of possibility).  If the codes are compressed somehow, or just programmed in a strange way then there's not much you can do aside from studying up more, and learning assembly level languages, which I can't even begin to help you with.

The one on this website has a trojan on it :\
I found another one, but it was confusing as all hell... Ahhhh :(

Stefan, I assume.  yes?

hello!

getting ten-minute overtime periods happening is probably the most likely of your requests for you to receive assistance on, so you may want to at least link them to what we already know about the concepts of adjusting period lengths.  the logos would need to be decompressed and organized, which is possible, but I believe we would need others to take the reigns on such endeavors.  most of the rest I would be surprised to see progress on, but none of it is really impossible.  adding real fighting would surely be the least likely (most difficult) of the stuff you mentioned desiring.

I hope you are here a bit while our forum is mostly down.  keep me posted on your hack's progress, please.

Which version of SNES9x did you download, which anti-virus told you it was a Trojan, and what did it label it as?

It's likely a false positive, but I'll check whatever you tried just in case.

The Genesis version is more hackable than the SNES version, FWIW.

There is a NHL 94 ROM hacking guide here that explains how to find the offsets for period lengths... http://www.romhacking.net/documents/441/

It's for the Genesis, but may have useful info.

Cool.
Figured out the overtime stuff, and periods.
Would love to figure out how to edit the logos, but seems unlikely :-{}

trudatman

you must explain the changing overtime length stuff to me!

we could still use some expert help with some things in SNES NHL '94.  the biggest thing we "need" is the ability to add (at least) two teams.  the original had 28 teams.  the league currently has 30 teams.  if you are at all interested in helping, I ask that you join us at http://forum.nhl94.com and bring your expertise directly to us.  the dude that started this thread may even be willing to compensate contributors for significant progress made.  so, the major hinderance seems to be the compression used on center ice images, but I may not be understanding the whole concept well enough.  I would suggest viewing the SNES ROM mapping topic over there and this one, too:  http://forum.nhl94.com/index.php?/topic/12496-snes-94-30-team-progress/

thanks for reading this.  be well and stay smiling.
