You can finally play the iconic movie on your NES!

Akira is a point-and-click text adventure following the plot of the movie (not the manga), and is sure to give even the greatest fans quite the challenge.

This project was many years in the making and was a combined effort of danke, Pennywise, and Niahak with some early aid from RedComet. The game was translated rather quickly, but, because it was a text adventure, space immediately became an issue. After a line hack and hijacking the native DTE, space was still a major issue. It was decided that the ROM needed to be expanded and the pointer system reworked. After that headache, the text was inserted without issues and with minimal editing for space. You can enjoy the game as it was meant to be.

The game itself is extremely challenging if you haven't watched the movie. There are also some 'shooting' mini-games that are enough to make you swear, so saving often is highly recommended.

To make use of the patch, you need to run the ROM through ROM Expander Pro, which is included in the zip file. All instructions can be found in the readme.

Due to the nature of the game and the hundreds of possible choices and responses, no amount of beta-testing could have checked over everything. As far as we know, the game is 100% bug-free, but there may be a typo or two. If you spot anything, feel free to report it in the forum post linked with this article.

Pennywise

If anyone plays through the game, could they compile some screenshots?

Bregalad

I didn't see the movie.
Should I still play the game or should I pass this one ?

Higgs

Sweet, been waiting for this one for a long time. Gotta love good ol semitalix too, one of my favorite fonts! =)

Well, just see how far you can get into the game before constantly dying.

I started translation work on this game before I saw the movie (though I read the manga)... and I don't think the story really stands on its own very well.  You will run into at least a half-dozen small brick walls where it's totally unclear where to proceed.  I had a pretty tough time reaching the end even after watching the movie.

This game was very clearly made for fans of the movie, if not as a simple cash-in.

I'm definitely pleased to see this, not the least reason being Akira is my favorite piece of anime of all time.

Wow! This is really great news. Great work, Danke. :)

I tried applying this to the No-Intro version of the ROM.  It didn't like the checksum.

Is this game any good? I remember trying the Japanese version a little while back and kept dying all the time. Just wondering if it is worth a play through.

I've never tested it with the No-Intro set as I don't really see the point of No-Intro NES games. Stick with the GoodNES Akira (J).nes.

Depends on your definition of good. It's an adventure game following the plot of the movie. If that sounds like your cup of tea, go for it! But if you stray too far from the original plot, you tend to die. And you will die a lot, because the Japanese are not very forgiving apparently.

Pennywise

I compared both versions of the ROM a few months ago. There were only a handful of differences that seemed to revolve around a small piece of code that didn't appear to be used by the game. So either version are pretty much the same and have no impact on the game.

Is it better than the Amiga game (which shouldn't be very hard, just make a game that doesn't start out with the speed bike level from Battletoads :D )?

(we only guess there's a good chance the canceled SNES/Genesis/N64 game was going to be based on that.)

I'll have to check this out. I grew up watching the original English translation of the movie. You know, the one with the voice actor that voiced Leonardo from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Now I here a live action movie is possibly in the works? Don't know officially what to think about that...
