Creating custom Super Mario RPG style sprites?

I'm currently confused on how the production of mario rpg character and location sprites are created. Their are only two rom hacks of the game i can find and I would say only one changes anything physical(and then it's just a recolored sprites) and I then occasionally find someone has made a custom character that looks like one of the ingame characters.

What I'm getting at is this, do you create them the normal way or is there some more complicated reason why I don't see any real Mario rpg/Donkey Kong Country full rom hacks?

Basically, the sprites in Super Mario RPG are pre-rendered 3D models. Someone could probably explain it better.

There's nothing stopping anyone from making new sprites for Super Mario RPG. The question is making them look good.

As Azkadellia said, the sprites in SMRPG are downscaled 3D renders. You could always try your hand at making models in the style of the full-resolution art using Blender or a similar tool, then exporting the fruits of your labor to PNG and using Photoshop or GiMP or something to scale them down to an appropriate size. You'll also need to set your frames to use a 16-color palette. It might not have to be the same palette for each frame - I'm not sure, but I think SMRPG uses a trick where each individual frame gets its own 16-color palette, giving the illusion of them using more colors than they actually are.

Now, if only somebody could remake the graphics not to use shitty pre-rendered sprites, the game would look DRASTICALLY better.

I have more of an issue with the unintuitive 2d/3d mess that is the gameplay itself, rather than the sprites. It's funny that all the sequels are almost completely 2d style, and SMRPG is the ugly duckling from 199X.
Don't get me wrong, SMRPG is by far my favorite:) Maybe because so much of the game is very "un-mario", so you don't really know what to expect.

I echo that. Big time. Also, I have always loved the graphical style and the pseudo 3D.

This game was made by Squaresoft using SGI workstations.

After Donkey Kong Country many games were made using 3d rendered sprites like Sonic Blast and a lot of PC titles.

I suppose one could look to Snake Rattle 'N Roll, Solstice, Equinox, or Landstalker for inspiration about that.

I like your idea about SaGa Frontier 2 style graphics.

I remember when I first played Paper Mario, I thought the art style was both cute and somehow unintentionally creepy at the same time.
