Translations: Takeshi's Challenge released
« on: December 25, 2011, 01:11:03 pm »

Update By: KingMike

Today, I have released a translation patch for the NES adventure game Takeshi's Challenge. Consider it a gift from Scrooge. :P

You've probably heard about this already. It's pretty infamous for its poor quality. Or maybe the whole game was just a comedian playing a prank on everyone. :)

I was planning to release it on the 10th to celebrate its 25th anniversary, but replacing the graphics proved more time consuming than I thought.
So instead you get to share the experience Japanese kids must've felt 25 years ago when they got this as a holiday gift. :D

Takeshi's Challenge? Is that anything like Challenge Castle (Or M.X.C, which is a parody of Challenge Castle.)

Use what I'm calling the "silent input" mode.
Press Down+A on controller 2 right before the karaoke segment, then attempt to push A on controller 2 to the beat of the song. I guess. I'm not sure if that's what I was doing or I got lucky and passed it.

I'm not sure if that's better, or worse, than how it's supposed to be done normally.  So in other words, perfect.

Yeah!

Thanks for doing this game!

Now, I don't have to do it!

Years ago someone asked me to do it.  I'll I did was compare the two versions of the game and found that the only difference was the mapper being used and the date on the title screen.

There was one other added routine I don't know the point of.
Something seemingly pointless like
LDA $4420 (unmapped memory, as far as anyone knows. The game is mapper 2 (UxROM or compatible).)
BNE $00 (or some other branch instruction, but AFAIK with a jump length of 0, it's a pointless instruction regardless)

As to hitting the boss, got a screenshot right here. ;)

In case anyone can get a use of it, this was the compare file I made back in the day.

It's funny to look at it now, cause this is the same thing that happened with Heracles.  An UNROM game with 2 different mappers for two different versions of the game released on different years.  The difference here is that, unlike DECO, Taito changed the (c) date in Takeshi so the community always knew the ROMs were different.

File 1: C:\NES\Docs - NEW PROJECTS\Docs - Takeshi\Takeshi no Chousenjou (1986) (J).nes

Yeah, what were they doing with the new code?  I can't see how it could do anything unless reading from that address affected the new mapper chip somehow, but then why the branch to nowhere?  Odd.

I also don't understand why they would change the IRQ vector. I know it's unused anyways, but why change from at least pointing to valid code to an invalid address?

I'm having an issue getting it to work. I'm very new to all of this so if someone could give me detailed step by step instructions on how to do it that would be much appreciated.

You need to expand the ROM first, which can easily be done on nflate if you're on Windows. You can download it from the utilities section here and run the program in the same directory as the ROM, type the file name and say yes to expanding the PRG-ROM. After expansion is successful, apply the patch.

I really want to try this but cant seem to get it to work, every time I expand it with nflate the patcher says its invalid, Im expanding the PRG-ROM. Im using LunarIPS to patch. Either Im not expanding it right, or Im using the wrong patcher. Also this is my first time patching a ROM.

Any particular reason for why this game uses IPS when the PRG-ROM  needs to be expanded. Wouldn't Xdelta be a more capable format, since it can handle this kind of thing?

@Arauron
Anyways, try this...
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/47184537/Patches/English.xdelta
It's an Xdelta patch of the translation. Use Delta Patcher to apply it to the ROM,
http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/704/
It's just as straight forward as LunarIPS, only the ROM no longer needs to be expanded.
Hope that helps!

In what has become a sort of a standard, an NES game that had its PRG-ROM expanded usually requires expansion before patching with IPS. It does seem kind of silly to add extra steps, but it's actually quite easy to do.

I think the only problem with xdelta that it isn't supported in emulators for soft patching, which people love to do from what I hear.
