When I apply a IPS to a super mario brothers rom of my choosing, sometimes it doesn't load at all, other times it loads but it does not show mario, and it instantly freezes. I've tried resetting it countless times. I've tried different emulators, most of them had the same result. Can somebody help? My main emulator is FCEUX. If this helps, this is Super Mario Brothers 1 (the first mario on the NES)

There are several different versions of the SMB ROM floating around out there: header/no header, trainer, no title screen, etc.  Perhaps you have the wrong one.

Headerless NES roms don't exist.  The Trainer is what would throw off all the patches.  Some old hacks needed a trainer, because that was the rom that "Mario Improvement" hacked a long time ago.
