SNES Genghis Khan 2

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I've always wanted to make some modifications to this game. I read the newbie starting guides and FAQs. I googled "Genghis Khan 2 rom hacks" and various versions of the phrase, and searched these boards, and as best as I could find there aren't any existing ROM hacks for the game or any game-specific utilities.

So, before I jump right in, I hope to avoid some trial and error time sinks. There are multiple utilities for multiple types of editing, and since this is my first time I don't know any of them or their pros/cons for various tasks.

If you're unfamiliar with the game, a brief description:
Turn based strategy. The game is a map of asia/europe, divided into provinces. Some of the provinces are playable (mongolia, japan, england, etc.). You develope your province, build an army, and conquer enemy provinces.

This is what I'd like to accomplish (eventually, I'm pretty sure it's going to take a lot of time especially since I have zero experience).
*Currently only a few of the provinces can be played by the Player, I'd like additional provinces available to be selected and played.
*Change various elements to make the game harder, including things like changing enemy starting resources, changing enemy ruler stats, disabling negative events (like rebellions or plagues) for enemies.
*Game currently supports 2 players, but would like the option for both players to play the same empire (player1 is king, player2 controls his particular province in the kingdom)
*Change various army units, like the firing range of catapults, and change the value that the computer associates with them (ie: computer currently buys a lot of cannons, for example, which are terrible units).

I'm fairly certain this is not a "newbie" project. But I really like the game and this is something I've always hoped someone would do. If the right tools exist, then I should at least try and do it myself.

If you have any suggested utilities to best accomplish this, or any extra reading that would help, I'd love to see it. Advice and tips always welcome.

Thank you,
Robert
