A nice, simple (and specific) question
« on: May 20, 2011, 08:25:27 am »
Not trying to cause a backdraft here, but...

Is there a utility that will allow me to wholesale replace the font in a Super NES game (say Final Fantasy VI), or must I edit the DTE table manually?

I have looked through the utilities to find one, but I do not see one, unless I am suffering n00b blindness.

A nice, simple (and specific) question with a horribly generic and undescriptive subject line.   >:(

It's not even that specific.  Surely it goes without saying that different games will have fonts of different sizes stored in different ways and in different places, such that no general utility could exist?
This signature is an illusion and is a trap devised by Satan. Go ahead dauntlessly! Make rapid progres!

Good morning to you, too.

Many of the font examples on the fonts page are shown using Final Fantasy VI's intro screen. This gave me the impression that there is a simple way to change out the font in that game, which happens to be what I'm interested in.

Relax. Breathe.

or must I edit the DTE table manually?
This will confuse people. The DTE and the font have nothing to do with each other.

The fixed-width font starts at C4/8000 and ends at C4/8FBF. It's very easy to find with a tile editor of some kind *cough*yy-CHR*cough*

If, in order to alter the font, I must change the tiles in the ROM manually, what are the font files in the font section used for?

Apologies again for the bald-faced banality of the whole thing, but as has already been expertly pointed out, I have no idea what I'm talking about. :D

I'm not sure why it's such a popular test image, but I do know that one FF3 editor (I forget the name, but I believe it was by... Yousei? Yousai?) had an option to import any Windows .ttf font file in the game.

Hm. FFed doesn't seem to want to load any of the versions of the American Final Fantasy III rom...oh well

I'm not convinced you're not having a bit of fun with me, though.  ;D

Stay away from FF3Ed. It has this 100% accurate method of corrupting your rom. Either open a clean one, change the font as you see fit, and copy that over to your working rom or just use a tile editor to change the tiles. By the way, FF3Ed only works with v1.0 of the rom, with a header of course.

What about FF3USME? It does what Yousei's FF3ED does and more.

FF3usME doesn't seem to have an option for simply changing the in-game font.

I think I tried using it, but it says it requires .dll files that I don't have and can't seem to find on google. I had given up looking for them out of fear of having to reinstall my OS...again.

As I've said above, and I'll say again, I'm really not a hacker. I'm a writer. I'm only doing this because I want to rewrite the dialogue in the game. I'm kinda compu-tarded.

Just in case someone's looking for something to do, the error message FF3usME v6.7 is giving me is

"The procedure entry point wmemcpy_s could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCR100.dll."

I haven't got the slightest idea what this means. :D

Seems like it's a wrong version of the DLLs you're using. Did you get these http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A7B7A05E-6DE6-4D3A-A423-37BF0912DB84&displaylang=en (for 32-bit OSes)/http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=BD512D9E-43C8-4655-81BF-9350143D5867&displaylang=en (for 64-bit OSes) for FF3usME 6.7?
