Update By: Gideon Zhi

Fifteen years to the day after its Japanese launch and twelve years after the project started back in 1999, Aeon Genesis and satsu have finally completed an English translation for The Adventures of Hourai High, a silly little RPG for the SNES. An extreme amount of effort went into rewiring the guts of this game to get it looking good in English, so we hope you enjoy it!

Oh, come on, why isn't it important to translate "Bubble Princess" (泡姫)? :P

Congrats, Gid!

He said that since the game is set in Japan, he wants to leave alone any Japanese text that's not important to understand for finishing the game.

I'm aware. I read the article. I was making a joke.

He said that since the game is set in Japan, he wants to leave alone any Japanese text that's not important to understand for finishing the game.
It makes sense but doesn't that make the translation look lazy? It would also make it look like a complete translation if everything was translated.
But I do kinda agree with this.

Found a major game breaking bug. I tried to use Hinako's Gust special, and the game reset itself and showed garbage after the title screen.

Otherwise, it's a fun diversion. I'm having a blast with it. Nice work Gid and sa-tsu.

-EDIT-

Found another bug. After you complete chapter 6 part 2, the game crashes.

-EDIT 2-

Forgot to mention I'm using snes9x 1.52, female path.

It's not an uncommon approach:

Using Persona as an example isn't very good, considering this is also a game full of honorifics and other random Japanese words that pretty much no one (except for some Japanophiles) appreciated. I'm pretty sure Ryusui went on a significant rant about it. And I found it distracting when I was playing through P3 (unless that's from P4, I can't tell).

Even as a person who speaks and reads Japanese, I was annoyed by the sign. I had never seen the kanji for 泡 before. Granted, now I know a new kanji because of it. But I'm pretty sure there are going to be English speakers going "What the HELL does that scribble say?" Just like I found it annoying when they made some character in Monster Hunter Tri actually speak partially in romaji Japanese. Yes, I get it. He's supposed to be Japanese. But he speaks English most of the time. He shouldn't be slipping back and forth into Japanese (though, sometimes they have him teach the player Japanese, which is kinda cool. But there are large sections put in there that are not translated at all). They're doing it in Pokemon White/Black now, too. I don't see the point in leaving portions like that untranslated or adding things that weren't there. You're trying to make a game localized for an English audience.

Yes, but at the end of the day, the game is set in Japan and that sign is just decoration.

What text speed are you using? If you're using the fastest, try turning the text speed down - there's a good chance you'll be able to get past the bug. Otherwise, if I could get a savestate before the crash (ideally with no text on-screen) it'd help.

That's P4, and it's a whole different kettle of fish from P3. Yes, the honorifics are still there, but the dub quality is much improved overall. Even Teddie's "Sensei" jokes don't grate nearly as much as they ought to.

Just to rule out a bad ROM issue, I've seen a couple dumps going around and the good (Japanese) ROM has a CRC32 of 6299FB1C.
I made a ROM dump of my own cartridge, and it matched that one.

Great job with the translation! From what I've seen so far, the dialogue quality looks excellent.

I second this motion, including the God Job part!

Hi, I noticed a few glitches when using the patch.

I beat the game, so it was nothing game changing, but I thought you would like to know just the same.

1. When I use the spell "firewall" the game automatically turns off.  So it seems the spell is unusable.

2. The main (boy) characters dorm had some scrambled graphics it seems.  Same with the robots room.  Here is the boys room:

3. I remember towards the middle of the game I was in some factory, if I remember correctly, and the graphics were scrambled.  This happened at one other point towards the end of the game in one portion.  I think the enemies were similar, just palette swaps.  It is not a big deal as I was able to get past these two points with no problems.  But maybe someone else might complain?

4.  Very minor, but sometimes I would get words left on the screen.  I did not care, but who knows what perfectionists lie around.  Don't look at pic unles you have beaten the game.

***SPOILER PIC****Is of boss at end of game but I had forgotten to take a snap shot during previous occurrences

In the end I was able to beat the game.  The only big issue was, just don't cast FIREWALL.  I remember someone else expressing an issue with another spell too.  But not casting that spell was not a big deal as there are some powerful physical attacks.  I think generally, magic is much weaker in this game, at least if you are up against one enemy.
