Mother Translation
« on: April 10, 2011, 12:04:28 pm »
First off, I know there is a translation of Mother and it's called Earthbound Zero. There are a couple of things wrong with the Earthbound Zero translation:

*The ROM is doubled in size. Not to mention, the data has been relocated.

*Piracy (?)

So I decided to make a translation of Mother NES. It's still in progress so don't be surprised if it stinks. I didn't repoint it yet. Right now, I'm focusing on finding all the dialogue.

Almost everything in the house is translated.

You can download it here:

Mother_1%_English.ips

There's no readme file . I know I'm going to get flammed for that  ::)

Is this supposed to be on the Newbie board? I put it on the newbie board just to be safe.

Actually, it's the CHR-ROM that's doubled in size. The PRG-ROM is the same. (total size 3mbit to 4mbit)
Yeah, Nintendo added some copy-protection to the game. It was only hacked because Nesticle, the popular emulator at the time it was dumped, was inaccurate enough that it broke the unhacked game.

Of course, if you still want to work on it, that's okay. But Tomato is working on the GBA port now, and it seems like a duplicate effort to retranslate the whole script from scratch (as I hear Mr. Itoi was insistent on leaving the content mostly unchanged, aside from a few enhancements made for the canceled NES version). Perhaps you may want to ask about sharing?

(more specifically, Tomato plans to do a real serious effort on Mother 1. As for Mother 2, he plans to "CyberGoth" it (for the less longtime sceners, it means he does a simple translation of the menus and items, just enough to make it playable to those who already know their way around EB). He says M1+2 is practically 2 self-contained games in one, and he wants to leave Mother 2 to someone with the time and effort to tackle it alone.)

By analyzing the game it seems to be completely from scratch. I'll make my translation and wait for Tamato's translations and base it off that.

I made a hack of Earthbound Zero called Red Rocket and I can attest to the copy protection. It's a pain to get around, but it only occurs at 3 parts of the game from what I remember. And really it's just a check at those specific points to make sure the data is unedited.

To wit, the 1337 Copy Protection Routine is a simple check of zero-page slot $0006. (Pirated/hacked games present as #E6. #00 is the "legit" value.) Rewriting two bytes of the routine:

Code: [Select]
A5-06

as:

Code: [Select]
A9-00
-totally defeats the measure!

The original poster's account seems to have been deleted.
I think he left. Don't remember what happened, and I don't think we need to be reminded.
So, if you haven't gotten an answer already, it's extremely unlikely you're going to get one here.

Works for me, but putting a % sign in the filename might create compatibility issues.

Still not working... I'll delete my cookies and stuff to see if it works now.
EDIT: It's nationwide! Mediafire does not work on Sky routers... but can be bypassed if you go on it via proxies

 (Off topic, sorry!)
