I really hope the left one is the new map^^

Celice

I kinda agree, actually. I haven't played FFVII in almost a decade, but the left image seems to convey that confusing, directionless snowiness than the right image, which seems more linear and small.

I think it's the scale of the maps, where the left image's graphics make the area look much larger and more barren, whereas the right image makes it look like you're in a small area. But like I said, I don't remember FFVII very well so maybe the right image is more appropriate for what it corresponds to in the original game.

KingMike

Check the file names. The first image is before.
(I was going to guess that because the original pirate used graphics copied from the official NES FF games. So I guessed the recolored FF1 mountains one was the "before" image.)

Chpexo

I am confused why some people like the original Chinese version's maps. They clearly put zero effort in making them because the graphics are unoriginal and the maps look haphazardly put together. Most of the time the maps don't even come close to looking like Final Fantasy VII.

Nerd42

For what it's worth, I think the new one looks better. However, "better" does not necessarily mean, "more like Final Fantasy VII." The newer one looks almost more SNES than NES while the older one looks easier for your character to lose their way in

Lugia2009

It's been a while since I played the original, but I remember getting lost traveling around these areas since everything looked very similar:

The house at the foot of Gaia's cliff is finished:

Theres actually a way you can get through that area really fast. You can go straight to the house. And ignore the cutscene. I learned that from watching speed runs.

ChronoMoogle

No offense, the new design of the snow fields may be more complex and does reflect the mointain-ish appearance better, but the mapping is way too blocky... while the appearance of the original one is just lovely. How about repainting those snow-piles to have a stonelayer underneath? and dividing the stage into a design with 2 floors and one connecting path while keeping the "original" style?

Vincent7

Lugia, you should change the color of Heidegger clothes to green, just like it was in original game.

Now, when you say blocky, you mean the mountain areas aren't quite as rounded as the originals?  I could round out the edges on the mountain parts.  And create some snow tiles that have stone showing underneath.  I could also take out the central area of the map and have that area completely open while leaving the mountain areas on the sides of the map.

I could see if I can do that.

I redid the opening area for the game, here's what it looks like now.

I also made alterations to the last part of the City of the Ancients using some of Chpexo's alterations.

Now opening area very close to original! Great work!

InfamousKnight

Does the opening map still have 2 battles? It does look much better though. That first map looked boring.

Yeah, everything's the same as it originally was, the layout's just different.

I updated the patch on the front page.

Since there's really not much left to work on, this'll be the last update before the final patch is released.  I just have a few more maps to work on and a few tweaks to make and the game will be finished.

Celice

Thanks for all the work you've and everyone else have put into making this game a little more awesome :) Any plans for a next project?

Chpexo

Cool! A final release is coming soon! Though this has been a long project, you've improved greatly in your style of hacking and of art. You never gave up through the process, which many have a hard time doing so. I'm glad I helped you when you first started this project and saw you grow in the process.

I made a title screen for the Chinese Final Fantasy IV by the way.

I have an idea for new project. What if reedit final fantasy IV by nanjing just like lugia did for VII? And use in nanjing's version graphic from ffIV by Henggedianzi? But first it's gotta be translated, of course...

Lugia, you have to fix bug in latest patch. In the opening area soldiers didn't stop coming

I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere in the thread, but my search skills have come up with nil:

Will this work on any manner of NES (not famicom) cart? I realize ShenZhen Nanjing used their own bizarre mappers and carts, but is there any NES donor cart that would be a suitable corpse to frankenstein FFVII onto?

I really would like to play this on actual hardware.

It's been my pleasure working on this game.  I've learned so much about romhacking.  When I first started, I had absolutely no experience or any idea what I was doing.  Mostly I was just fiddling around with the graphics in tile editor.  It's been fun working on this game, and I look forward to taking this experience I've gained and using it to improve other games.

Thank you so much for all your help and everyone else who has helped me. I really appreciate it. :)

This is the next project I started:

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,15461.0.html

After this game is fully translated and improved, I was thinking about working on a Resident Evil Famicom translation project.
I've been playing that game and although the game does freeze often, the game is very playable using the PSP's Nester P emulator.
The emulator has a rewind button that makes it much easier to play through the freezes.

I think finding a Nanjing cart would be easier.  Although, finding a Nanjing cart isn't enough, some of their games look like they have epoxy globs over top of the game chip.  (I found 3 of them, 2 of which have epoxy globs over the rom chip.)

Someone would have to hack the game's mapper which may be near impossible.

I really like what you did with the title screen , but for the coloring of the sword, why don't you move everything right one tile and fix the palette tile on the sword so it doesn't change the color of the lettering too?

I made a test message in English for this game, and for Final Fantasy X1,X2, and X3 also.

Okay, I'll check it out.

Vincent7

I don't like Chpexo's version of title screen. I think nanjing's version based on gba version of ffIV, so original title screen close to gba game, except chinese letters down the title. Also, some people may think that is no final fantasy IV but ffII with changed title screen. Got it?

I think you should have it say Final Fantasy IV instead of Final Fantasy II as thats the correct name for the game. Yes, I do know about why the game was named "2" back on the SNES.
