Need help with Final Fantasy VII NES graphics
« on: January 26, 2011, 09:05:35 pm »
Hi, this is my first time working on a game and I decided to improve the graphics on the Final Fantasy 7 NES port. I managed to change Cloud and Barret's battle sprites, here's what they look like now.
http://s753.photobucket.com/albums/xx179/JCC2000/?action=view&current=cloudandbarret.jpg

But I am having trouble with editing the graphics. When I go into tile layer pro, here's what the data looks like.
http://s753.photobucket.com/albums/xx179/JCC2000/?action=view&current=FF7tilelayerpro.jpg
I can edit the graphics, but it takes a lot of trial and error. and is a bit confusing a times.

I wanted to know if anyone knows a way to make it appear like normal.

It looks like the tiles are offset. TLP starts out assuming each tile fits neatly in a 16-byte slot. Some games don't bother aligning the graphics to 16-bytes, so you need to use the "+" and "-" keys to adjust for that. The aggravating bit is that each time you scroll, you'll need to re-align.

Did you download Lindblum's 49MB archive already?

I have some mugshots you can add . I have some knowledge of the mug shot palettes.
These palettes are located in the mugshot data, that's convenient.
1aa739-Tifa's palette tiles (0F36120F0F36190F)
1aa519-Cloud's palette tiles

Though these palettes tiles only affect the menu's mugshots not the ones from the overworld. The overworld has about over a 100 repeated palettes.

EDIT:Here's a better picture of Tifa

Cool, I'll add the mug shots. I already changed Red XII's to the one I found on one of the other boards. I also changed Red XII's battle sprite so he no longer looks like a horse.
Here's what he looks like now, what do you think?
http://s753.photobucket.com/albums/xx179/JCC2000/?action=view&current=red.jpg

Let me know if you have any enemy sprites, and I'll be happy to add them. I don't know how to change which enemies are encountered where, but I can at least alter the enemies to ones from FF7.

Also, how do I find the palettes for characters on NESPalette editor. I wrote down the four color numbers for Barret and tried to find them, but when I entered them it said string not found.

Red XIII looks nice but I improved it to make it look better

To find Baretts palette you have to choices: A palette chart or an emulator reads them for you. Fceux can read them for you by clicking Debug then PPU Viewer. A screen should pop up with little boxes at the bottom. Hover your mouse over the boxes and the hex will appear to the left next to palettes.
Barett's palette is 27 19 18.

If your looking for the mugshot tile colors the hex is 0F3617 and there are 114 of these.

Red XII?
Lol thanks for pointing that out.

By the way do you know anything about the FF VII bootleg? You did have something to do with a project dealing with it before.

I like how you made Red XIII look, I'll add his new graphics right away. Thanks :)

I tried to edit Barret's palette. I found it and tried to change the top part of his head to what his skin color actually looks like, it worked, but Cloud's palette changed too. I'm a little lost on how to go about altering Barret's character palette without affecting Cloud's.
I hope not, but I may just have to leave it be and settle for Barret's battle sprite and mug shot showing him as a black person, but his character sprite showing him as a white person.

You don't need to change palettes to edit Barett's color. Barett's sprite palette is just one palette. You use tile layer to change his color.

Edit: It seems you need to learn some tutorials. Click this http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=7155

All the data is near the graphics; this is an easy hack. If you want anything else, ask.

This game has very few "own" graphics, all enemies are from FF III,and a few other graphics are from FF II.The monsters mostly do not look like their FF VII counterparts
and Lindblums enemy images arent of good viewpoint and quality.
A lot of the towns and dungeons need remapping.
Then some tilesets are very unfitting, like using temple tiles for industrial areas or greeny slums.
Hanjuku Hero, a NES strategy game from Square has a nice tileset for your inspiration
.

You can view the FF VII maps at Glitterberris site, she translated all signs on them.
