Nope, vanilla Shikigami is fine. Here's the other title screen:

There may be others, but I think there's just two.
(This appears when you select Normal mode.)

I guess that doesn't give as much room to work with as subtitles go... ah well.

This is a secondary screen, the primary is the other one.

Rotate it left 90 degrees, move it to the left side of the screen, and use vertical text?

Due to the way graphics are implemented, that literally might not be possible. The borders are fixed, and we hack the graphics inside them.

I'll keep you informed, though.
(I agree a vert orientation might be best for this, regardless.)

To be honest, this is what I had in mind for the other logo before Kiyoshi Aman suggested putting it at the top of the screen. It's...a compromise, and I know it, but seeing the results of trying to hack English text into the Japanese logo, I think we're better off just leaving it alone and working out a way to insert a stylish subtitle, like this.

EDIT #2: Forgot to darken the shadow.

Why do you tease us like that? Is someone working on re-translating Goemon 1?

I like everything except the "GOEMON" font. It would look better if it had a more Japanese style to it. Other than that, it retains most of the assets from the original, which is great.

Why not just use the "Mystical Ninja" name? The N64 and Game Boy games used it when they came Stateside, and they didn't bother with "Kid Ying" and the other Americanizations. >_>

The PAL version logo even uses the diamond shape, although stretched out to accommodate English text.

I like it, but GOEMON could be a bit more brushstrokey. For me Mystical Ninja is a generalization that doesn't really work within the context of the game. Goemon is clearly not a ninja. I also don't mind Ganbare because that is typically how the series is referred to and translating it just doesn't work too well. You'd be better off going with something original that matches the context of the series.

If you just outright copy the logo that was used for the N64 games it would look something like this (total mockup.. I probably went outside the bounds of the available tiles somewhere. Or several somewheres). And while I understand wanting to include all the text to get it to be an exact (or very close) translation of the subtitle in the box, it's a damn shame to cover up the nice-looking animated kite, so shortening it like this might be for the best, not to mention that full one feels a bit too cramped.

(I love Goemon games, too.)

The right subtitle is "Scroll of Princess Yuki's Rescue" so I made another change.

And I made a title screen for Goemon 2 too.

Doing some work on the third, but the script is definitely one of the more complex I've dealt with. Haven't figured out all the control codes.
Only behind Kabuki Rocks as the most complicated I've attempted.
(the sort of thing where you'll probably have to play the game until you hate it BEFORE you start hacking it.
