ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania III Hacking Questions
« on: December 24, 2016, 09:17:27 am »
I know there isn't a lot of documentation on this game unfortunately, but I figured I would start a thread to see if anyone could answer any of the questions I have / will have while developing my hack. First off, does anyone know how changing bosses works using reVamp? For some stages modifying the bosses works and for others it doesn't. Right now I have an issue where I changed the boss of the Sunken City to Death, but after you defeat him when the stage ends it boots you back to Stage 1. My guess would be that it is some kind of error handler since the game should be taking you to the second part of the stage at that point. So if I could just find where the code tells the game what level to take you to next then it should be fixable hypothetically, right?

hack of Castlevania III, or Akumajou Densetsu?

If it's only CV3, please try to make a Akumajou Densetsu version so we who love VRC6 can get our groove on.
Sorry! The hack is for CV3, but I will see what I can do about making a version for Akumajou Densetsu.

Personal Projects / Castlevania III Prelude of Light

Hey everyone! I thought I'd share some info on my latest project :) I am currently working on a hack of CV3 known as Castlevania III Prelude of Light (name finalized). This is my most ambitious hack thus far and so I am doing my best to make it the best experience I can for hardcore fans of classic Castlevania. Honestly I am surprised by the lack of work that has been done on such an amazing game so I have gotten in contact with levelengine, another CV3 hacker, who is assisting in the project as well. I don't want to spoil too much so I won't be revealing much more until the hack is released, but expect a fresh new Castlevania III by the time it is finished!

*For those wondering yes this is the same project I posted before, but I needed to move it to the right section of the forums.

The story takes place in an alternate timeline where Dracula defeated the Belmonts and conquered all of Europe. Thus, a new generation of Vampire Hunters are born and team up to restore peace to Transylvania. The story definitely doesn't take itself too seriously and the dialogue between the characters is meant to be witty and entertaining.

    Opening Prologue:

    Vampire Hunter

    • Redesigned stages
    • New characters
    • An Expert difficulty
    • Modified sprites & palettes
    • Rewritten story & dialogue
    • Day to night transition

Finished the character scenes dialogue as well as the opening sequence and title screen text.
Also, the passwords are now as follows:
    -NOAH (2nd Quest)
    -PEARL (Sypha)
    -CHASE (Grant)
    -JESSE (Alucard)
    -I SUCK (10 Lives)

Going to get back to working on stages now! If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them :)
Eventually I will need someone to assist with modifying the sprites for the title screen so if you know how to do that (and are willing) then please let me know! I wouldn't mind putting a team together for this now that I think about this.

I'm finally back and I have another big new project! I am working on a hack of CV3 (aka the best and my favorite). This hack includes entirely reworked level design, modified sprites, and a level of difficulty that will be even more frustrating than the original. The story is still being written and the title will likely be changed in the future. So far all that has been completed is stage 1 and I am still familiarizing myself with the editor (reVamp). There are many unexpected limitations I have to work around, but despite that I am still doing my best to create the long awaited CV3 hack people have wanted for so long now :)

ROM Hacking Discussion / Stake Castlevania Editor Question

Does anyone know how to remove stairs or breakable blocks when editing objects??? I swear I have tried everything, but just can't figure it out.

ROM Hacking Discussion / Castlevania III reVamp Utility Not Working?
    « on: December 06, 2016, 10:45:14 am »
I can't seem to get the utility to open up any ROM I have. It says it only takes the Castlevania III (US) and Akumajou Densetsu (J) ROMs, but I have tried both of those and neither have worked. Has anyone else had this complication?

Spotted an error in your text. The "Will" in the story dialogue shouldn't be capitalized.

Looks pretty good so far, although you should probably redraw or at least palette swap the characters. If you want, I could try my hand at it.
Thank you for catching that :) And yes I'd really like to modify the sprites or at least change colors, and I've attempted but to no avail. Would you be willing to try? I already have an idea for all of the characters designs.

This week's update is coming out early! The prologue is now finished! (woot!) :) Should take roughly one hour to complete (assuming no game overs). I've started fleshing out the game progression so I have a pretty good idea of how to order of story events will unfold now.
Also, if anyone's noticed I have changed the title of the hack to Final Fantasy IV Heroes of Light & Dark to better fit it. It's likely only going to be a temporary name and so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! As always feedback is more than welcome as it helps to create a better game in the end so don't hesitate to comment!

Newcomer's Board / Looking for Experienced Sprite Editor & Team Members
    « on: September 01, 2016, 07:37:58 am »
I am in desperate need of someone who is familiar with editing sprites. Specifically, I'm trying to replace certain FF IV sprites with FF V sprites as well as change the palettes of some sprites, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

    Here is the project:,22582.0.html

If you aren't good at sprite editing, but would like to be a part of the team then let me know :)
It would be great to have more people to help out with this hack! (Especially if they know a lot about FF IV hacking!)

(Also, sorry if I posted this in the wrong location. I wasn't sure where to post requests so I just came here. Sorry!)

Thank you so much for all your help so far! I do have a few more questions though if that's alright.
1.How would one increase the number of six letter spells?
2.I'm very familiar with editing hex as I have worked a lot with FF III (NES). So give me instruction and I can make it happen :)
3.No luck on sprites/ title screen. Messed around with palettes but couldn't get it to work. What sprite editor do you use?
4.Will your patch with for my hack without messing anything up?
5.Is there any way to setup custom equip indexes for weapons/armor?

And by the way I've been playing around with your hack demo. It's really great so far :) I can tell you've put a lot of time into it!

Is,17302.0.html the thread where the information is? Also does it apply to class, character, command, and spell names? Another thing I'd like to do is give Edge more Ninjutsu but it doesn't look like there is anymore room...

Today I'm going to see if I can figure out how to change GP to Gil. I'm also going to try to edit sprites so I can get some FF5 sprites in the game as well as trying to edit the title screen if possible. Oh and I'll be trying to figure out how events and triggers work...

And one other thing, how do you add a B button dash?

Works perfectly now! As far as sprite editing goes, I think I could do it, but only if I could see the correct colors in the sprite editor and I don't know if you can do that. I'm using yychr.

Wow it works great now! Thanks for your help! Still can't get that editor to work for some reason though. I've tried versions 1.0 and 1.1, but neither will work so I'm a bit stuck on coordinates right now.

So I'm having this weird glitch with Adult Rydia where adding her to the party makes her level 0 with 0 HP/MP... Any idea what that's about?

Thanks for your help! I've checked out your project as well and to be honest it looks so good I'm actually jealous! I'm curious, how did you implement custom graphics / make sprite modifications? Also do you know how to make names and job classes longer than 6 characters? Oh and for whatever reason when I add/remove a character from the party during a cutscene then bring up the naming screen the sprites disappear until the dialogue is finished. Any remedy for that?

Sounds like a fun idea, and I'm always excited to see stuff done with FFIV.

I assume you're using FF4kster for edits. Do you plan on sticking to what can be done with that, or will you be editing ASM a bit as well?

Will the characters eventually not look like Cecil, Rydia, et al?

Any idea about how long the eventual final product will be (as in, total gameplay time)?
Yup. I'm using FF4kster (it's a lot of work by the way!). I don't trust my abilities outside of the editor so I won't be doing anything with ASM right now. I would really like to have custom sprites, but I don't think I'm skilled enough in pixel art to do it myself haha. As far as the final product goes, I'm hoping the it will be roughly how long the original is. Right now I'm trying to plan out a flow chart of the order of events, story elements, etc. And I am also trying to think about if there is anything outside of the limits for what I can do using the editor. I also cannot find the coordinates for the world map which is a bit problematic at the moment.
