Script Help and Language Discussion / Might and Magic Script Help
« on: June 11, 2019, 03:38:52 pm »
This is from the scroll quest from the Famicom version of Might and Magic.

The context is that the player delivers a scroll, and he says that this was a test all along.
He ask a request to the player.

Here he talks about communicating with telepathic messages to the Astral Brothers in Portsmith and Algary for some time and a threat from the stars.

I'm having trouble with understanding everything being said.
Any help will be appreciated.

EDIT: The first screenshot was wrong, and is now correct.

I agree it's supposed to be "Ninja Boy". In English, a character title often comes before the noun. In Japanese, it works the other way around. "Boy Ninja" not only sounds weird, but overly literal too.

This version of Last Bible is certainly an improvement in many ways, but it’s missing the nostalgic music from the Game Boy.

5
I did see a post about restoring the music in the past. Unfortunately, the game doesn't use Sappy (I've tried.)

That said, I prefer the GBA's music.

This game looks similar to SimEarth, only on a galaxial scale. For a machine translation it looks pretty good. The text reminds me of an old Mac game.

It's nice to see PC-98 games get translated, you're doing a good job.

I haven't done too much other than restoring the signs in the towns, but I've started studying the
other features like the menu and passwords.

Hopefully they'll soon work like the Japanese version soon.

Definitely Might and Magic for the Nes (and to a somewhat lesser extent, its sequel.) An impressive soundtrack by Masaharu Iwata,
improved graphics over the PC versions, and overall better gameplay.

9
It definitely has to be the Nebulous translation, considering the similarities.

10
Because it is a Bohemian Rhapsody.

Indeed.

But I do think that it is a spelling mistake and "Liver" is supposed to be river.

Help Wanted Ads / [Translator][Nes] Might and Magic
« on: January 02, 2019, 01:51:29 pm »
Hello everyone.
I've been restoring the Nes version of Might and Magic and I need help with the text I extracted. So far, I've translated only a small amount of the text.

While I have made some progress, my Japanese is not enough to translate the game.

Thank you to all who are intrested.

Thank you for this wonderful release.

I've now finished restoring Sorpigal's events.
Interestingly, there's an unused event that looks like an early version of Sheltem's reveal. There's also an event that only happens in the Japanese version of the game that involves a sword.
I have a text file that I would like help translating, but haven't finished it yet because of some computer problems.

According to this site the game uses the Electronic Arts sound engine.
I've tried myself to disassemble it, but other projects preoccupied me.
As for the checksum, here is how to get past it.

I finally fixed the locust plague bug.
I'm not sure of all the details, but I know for sure it's not caused by an underflow.
I failed to mention that when I lowered the amount of attacks to 1, the damage done would range from survivable to near 255 damage.
Apparently, the game loads random values in the accumulator only if the damage amount only equals 1.
Fixing the bug wasn't particularly easy, because of the lack of free space in the bank.
All that's left is to fix a side effect of the bug that causes your attacks to cause 1 damage if your fighting the locust plague.
Oh, and the "experimental substance" is Thunderanium.

The messages are actually used in both the Nes and Japanese versions.
In the case of the high court sentence, in the FC version, there's some extra dialogue.
Speaking of text, the "You must bring the experimental substance! Begone!" message is used in P-Peak B2.
The Japanese version funnily enough basically says the same thing as the computer versions.
I'm not sure, but I think the experimental substance is either Thunderanium or Unobtainium.

The Japanese version functions the as the other versions do, exactly 1 damage per attack.
I believe this is an underflow, when I lowered the Locust Plague's attack amount
they did at least 99 damage, but when I changed their attack stat to 2,
they did 2 damage per attack instead of 255.
This is not an error with the enemy stats, as they are essentialy the same
in both versions, with sprites being the difference.

Also, I found something interesting about Lord Kilburn.
In the Japanese version of the game, he's having a nightmare.
When the event was being edited, they must have forgotten to remove
the portrait.

Thank you for pointing that out! I can't believe I just noticed this just now.

As for the Locust Plague, I noticed something weird about the way turns work.
If an enemy knocks out one of your party, they get an extra turn to attack,
allowing the enemies take potshots at your party. That's probably why they
attack you near infinite amount of times. Speed is still a factor to turn
order, but with the exception with Sonja, who is slower from everyone by one point,
character stats are identical to the Japanese version.
