I have modified the Second Mouser's colors to match Stage 1's.
It's meant to separate the 3 Hitter Vs. the 5 Hitter.
But seriously we all just hit him until hes dead anyway so best make him look normal.

Might as well. A player is always small when they've only got one "heart" anyway, right? That makes the meter unnecessary.

Perfect, Then it's going.
Because every time I manage to get the perfect colors down, That damn health bar goes to hell.  :crazy:

Here is Stage 4-3 with a new Birdo, This makes this part a lot harder than before, You are given one Flurry to do damage to Birdo. All you have to do is hope you can make it respawn 3 times before getting incinerated.

Also, Stage 4-1 now has a Birdo as well.
I fixed all the Birdo colors as well, Inside ones are red and outside ones are pink.
I have also added Doors to all the places where there were only black rectangles.

Latest Progress....

Stages 2 and 6 now have the Goombas instead of Stage 1 which now has the original Shyguys.
This was done because the Palettes were just not cooperating before and because the Goombas looked ridiculous riding the Ostros.
Plus the Palettes too were causing problems with that as well.

So overall this makes the game look familiar at first but as you progress you start to see small changes eventually getting to the major ones involving higher difficulty and new enemies.
Also,
I'm going to put Buzzy Beetles in Stage 7 instead of Stage 2.

Still looking into Music Conversion which is starting to look very possible.

I modded the colors to the Beetles to match SMB3 more. However in some parts of the Level 2 the Beetles Palette is connected to the pesky health meter again. So if I change one the other gets screwed up. I'm still tempted to get rid of that pain in the butt health meter.
But, I am not sure yet.

Here we have Stage 3-3 with an added Birdo.
This one is somewhat tricky to beat since the respawning of the Ninji is somewhat far from the Birdo.
Defeating him will be somewhat hard but fun none the less.

Here is some new stuff...

I changed the music to the boss theme in the room just before the first Mouser while fighting the Third Birdo.

I also never understood stars in the day sky, So I turned it to night to see what it would look like.

I agree with everyone.
I'm not feeling the colors and I'm attempting too many things at once.
I'm going to restore the original colors for now, Focus on the sprites then come back to the color editing later.

Ok,
So what I figure is, For starters I Will be adding a new character to each level.
Stage 1 got the Goombas, And now Stage 2 has Beetles. I will continue this formula through the 7 stages and go from there.

Here's the next bit of creation..

Added a Third Birdo to Stage 2-3.
I gave up the idea of changing all the Birdos to his/hers native colors because in Stage 2-2 Birdo's Palette is connected to another very important one that seriously destroys the games color scheme. So the idea was scrapped.
However, This does introduce a new color Birdo that is kinda cool looking...

Also this Birdo does not shoot any eggs or have any Mushrooms around it to use against him.
Thank god for respawning of the enemies.
This adds some difficulty to the game but not so much that it makes this a total nightmare.

I learn something new everyday, Turns out the sprite sheets for Stages 1 are also connected to Stage 3, Which makes sense.
So for starters we got more Goombas and more Flying Creatures.

You should make the underground music to make it the same to the Prototype.

Originally I didn't even know there was a Prototype.
I checked out You Tube and listened to the unused tracks.
I'm totally going to import them in at some point.

After fighting with color palettes for the last hour I think I finally have ruled out the worst of ideas.

Here are some images of what I have been doing...



Trying to make the Castles look more like Castles and not random colored rooms..







The background for Mouser is not Orange this occurred because I snapped the picture right when a bomb went off.
The background color is the same as the others. Also I was able to separate Birdo's Palette from Mousers, Allowing me to keep Birdo's Pink Color without destroying Mouser's Grey.



And my favorite, Adding the third Birdo. He/She looks a little mangled by his neck, This is due to flickering. Seems I have terrible luck when I push the capture key.

What about galoombas(SMW goombas)?

There's an idea,
The Super Mario World Nes Hack has the sprites in 8 Bit Format.
I might give that a shot and see what happens.

Note - Just in case anyone was wondering, I am not planning on replacing all the characters in the game on every level.
But mixing them together so the Mario 2 Characters are not completely lost and typical Bowser Characters don't end up dominating the game. So you get familiar enemies with new comers as well. But keep in mind this is meant to give the illusion that this was designed at the time Mario 3 and later games were not out yet. This is also an interpretation of how the game would have looked in my opinion if Nintendo did more than just copy most of the enemies from the original Doki Doki Panic.

Here are some more updates....

I changed the backgrounds to black referencing the original Mario Underground Areas.





Here you will see that you now face a Third Birdo at the end of the third stage before the Big Boss.



Mouser still has his original colors, I will be working on the background next.
Using black here however will not work since Mouser's Tail is also black which will merge into the background.

Note - I'm going to work more on the background colors, Black is nice but messes with the outlining.

I'm not sure, but isn't it illogical that you include goombas in a game where you can step on enemies that inevitably killing them? If it were koopa troopas or buzzy beetles tho

I gave the beetles a try but something looks wrong with them in my opinion.
I'll continue trying different things.

Here? I only see white, green, and yellow. It looks like the "outline" is actually transparent, just showing through to the solid background.

Yes,
It's an illusion.
The outlining is actually the background color.

I really dig this idea! It's always great to see some more Super Mario Bros. 2 hacks getting worked on. :woot!:

I gather the main objective is to convert all the enemies into what you expected the game would be more like, but do you think that you might be interested in creating a level hack out of this new representation? :)
From what I understand and can remember from way back when I tried to use the level editors myself, they aren't necessarily the easiest to work with until you probably get used to them, but it could enhance this hack even more. :D

Not that you have to though. Just expressing my interest. I hope that your motivation continues to grow as you continue to work on your project. Best of luck! You can do it! :beer:

EDIT: Oops. Sorry. I also meant to ask, since I was curious; what exactly did you do to fix the health bar colours? Did you change the graphics themselves in a graphics editor, or did you change which part of the palette the graphics use in a hex editor? Either way, it's great that you figured it out for yourself. :)

The Health Bar is used with the same Palette as the Red Shy Guys, So I removed all the Red ones and replaced them with the Pink Shy Guys. The Pink Shy Guys use a separate palette not connected to the Health Bar. So I edited the Palette that the Pink ones are connected to and changed that one into Goomba Colors, Leaving the Red ones the color Red. Which keeps the Health Bar its original color.

I am currently using a Graphics Editor, Palette Editor And A Hex Editor here and there.
But not much because Hex Editing is the hardest for me to grasp.

Hmmm, nice going. Is it the Bowser from SMB3?

The bubbles could be replaced with hammers, and with some ASM, add a secondary attack of fireballs. The Autobot's fireball comes to mind...

Yes, That is the Bowser from Mario 3. I originally thought of using The Original Bowser from Mario/Lost Levels.
I may try that too just for a test. My goal is to make it look as if the later games were not out yet and this was actually released back in the 80's/90s. But we will see what happens.

I was thinking of using Hammers as well like in the later stages of the first game. Right now I have Tri-Clydes fire balls in replace of the bubbles. I'll mess around with other items at some point too.

I changed the intro screen so it looks more like the All-Stars Version as well as converted the Goomba Sprite.
However this messes up the Life Bar colors making it complicated to read. I might remove the actual life bar altogether as seen that the other Mario games don't have life bars as much as you just know better than to get hit twice. I don't know how this will effect the extra mushrooms you can obtain. I will run further tests later on involving that.

Scratch all the worries I had about the health bar, It seems sometimes I am hasty when it comes to throwing in the towel.
Once I put my mind into it, I figured it out.

After working with Stage 1, I decided to change the empty black doors and add an actual door in their place.
I believe this was done in All-Stars only with Elevator Type Doors.

Hey Everybody,

Almost everyone that played Mario 2 growing up noticed the change of characters and the absence of Bowser.
So what I have been working on this last couple of days is a hack that will convert all the enemies and some other stuff into what at least I expected Super Mario 2 would be more like.
The first game I played in the series was Mario 3 and then the original Mario.
So when I finally got to Mario 2..I was like where are the Goombas and most importantly who in gods names is Wart?!!?
Now of course its common knowledge about Doki Doki Panic and why we ended up with the USA version of Mario 2.

So here we go....

I spent the last couple of days trying to convert Wart into Bowser.
It's not complete yet, I still have to edit the Palette and make a couple more adjustments.

Here are a couple pictures of what I have done so far.....
